UNITE@ PATENT @lll`lt}lii.
SAMUEL I. BELT, 0F CHEBRYDALE, VIRGINIA, AND JOSEPH W. BELT, OF OKLAHOMA, OKLAHOMA.
LIQUID-OPERATED DAMPER-REGULATOR.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed. December 2, 1911, Serial No. 663,583. Renewed January 29, 1913. Serial No. 745,006.
To (lA/l whom it may concern Be it known that we, Santini. l?. Buur and Jesi-irrt YJ. liner, citizens ol the United States, residing at Cherrydale, Virginia, and at )klahoina, Oklahoma, respectively, have invented certain new and use'tul ,lmproveinents in Liquid-Operated Damper- Regulators, olil which the following is a specitication.
rl`his invention relates to damper regulators, and especially to means for operating dra'tt dampers ot steam boilers.
The object of the invention is to provide means 'for operating dempers by water pressure itroin a` boiler so that a damper may be operated at the least variable steam pressure ot' the boiler.
A further object of the invention is to jin'ovide in a device Yfor operating dampers by water or other' fluid pressure, such novel and peculiar construction and arrangement o't parts as will insure the operation of the damper during the least variable steam pressure ot the boiler, and which will equalize the water pressure on certain parts oit the device, and thereby avoid friction between said parts in a damper-working operation.
A still further object of the invention to provide, in a damper operating device, a special cylinder having water connections with a steam boiler and with a damper cylinder, and a special piston 't'or circulating the Vater to and :from the damper cylinder through the piston cylinder.
Various other objects, advantages, and improved results are attainable in the practical application and working ot the invention.
In the accompanying drawings :forming part ot this application: Figure 1 is a side elevation, showing the application ot' the invention. Fig. 2 is a central vertical section. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the piston. Fig. l is a perspective view ol' the pistoncylinder.
The saine reference characters denote the saine parts throughout the several views otf the drawings.
ln carrying out our invention we employ a damper cylinder l, having a piston 2, and a piston rod or stern 3, connected with an ordinary damper l, by a lever la, and a link 9.a. rlhe lower end of the cylinder l is provided with a pipe nipple or coupling 5, and said cylinder is supported by a base G attached to and j n'ojeeting Yli'rom a steam chest 7, the parts ot which are secured together by suitable bolts S, so as to secure a diaphragm t) within the steam chest, which is supplied with steam by means ot a pipe l0, from a steam boiler 5, so that the steam pressure o'l` thc boiler is Inade against the under side ot the diaphragm. A cylinder l1 projects from the upper portion o't the steam chest, and such cylinder has a water induction port 12, and a water exhaust port- 123. Pipes l-it and l5 lead to and lrom the ports l2 and 1S resjfiectively, :tor supplying water or other motive Huid to the cylinder ll, and said pipes may be connected with the water-leg o't the boiler, or with such other source ojt liquid supply as desired. A water channel or duct .lli is 'formed on the cylinder 1l, and said duct connects a water port 1,7 with a water port 13. The ports 17 and 1S are :termed in the cylinder ll, out of the diametrical lines ol the ports 'l2 and 13, respectively, and the upper portion ot the duct lt has a nipple if), lor a pipe Q0, which is attached to the nipple 5, so that the pipe 20 is in constant communication with the duet '1(5, opposite the port i7, and the duct is in constant communication with the port 1S.
llaving provided a special cylinder, as above described, we provide said cylinder ll with a special piston 21. having a. stein 22 working in and adjustable at: the top ot the cylinder ll by means ot a set screw 3". and a 'follower' -il 'lhe piston is cushioned at the top by means oi. a spiral spring 22 seated on a shoulder 9?) ot the piston, and working againsty the 'tollower, and the piston has a disk-head Z-lworking in the upper portion ot the steam chest T, and engaged by the diaphragm l) -t'or operating the piston. In order to establish communication between the ports l2 and f1.7, and communication between the ports l?) and i153, the piston Vis provided with an upper annular groove 25, and a lower annular groove 2G. lhc groove 25 jtornis an induction water channel through the cylinder tl, and the groove 2G 'forms a water exhaust or return channel through the cylinder to the boiler. The grooves are at least twice the width ot' thc ports 12, 1?, 1T and 1S, so that during the oper-attimi ol the piston the ports Vl?) and A17 arc opened and closed with respect to the grooves Q5 and QG without closing the ports 12 and 18, whereby the piston is perfectly balanced laterally under the pressure of Water to and from the cylinder 11. @Wing to the relative arrangement of the ports With respect to the pist-on channels, and when the stroke of the piston is properly adjusted, the channel 25 is never out of communication with the port 12, and the channel 2G is never out of communication With the port 18, so that an upward movement of the piston, under pressure of steam on the diaphragm, Will close the damper, and a reverse movement of the piston, by reason of loiv steam pressure, Will open the damper.
t should be understood that various mechanical changes and variations may be made in the practical construction and application of the invention, and that the size, shape, and material may be modified, Without departing` from the spirit of the invention as expressed in the claims to follow.
Having thus described our invention what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is Tl e combination with a fluid-operated damper for steam boilers, a piston connected With the damper, and a cylinder for the damper-piston, of a cylinder having a steam chest connected With the boiler', a pair of fluid-ports on opposite sides of this cylinder above the steam chest, the ports on one side being out of the horizontal plane of the ports on the other side and adapted to supply motive fiuid, a fluid duct in the Wall of the ported cylinder for connecting the ports on the other side, a pipe connecting said duct with the damper-cylinder, a piston having` annular fluid channels coperating with the said ports so as to be balanced by fluid pressure through the ported cylinder, a piston-head Working in the steam chest and closing' communication between the chest and the ported cylinder, and means for cushioning the channeled piston.
Witness whereof We hereunto set our hands in the presence of two Witnesses.
SAMUEL P. BELT. JOSEPH W. BELT.
