DAM PER-REGULATO R.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 293,367, dated February 12, 1884..
Application filed July 14, i883. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE WV. SMITH, of Milford, in the county of Oakland and State of Michigan, have invented new and useful Improvements in Damper-Regulators; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and eXact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in the construction of damper-regulators of that class designed to be operated by the pressure of steam in the boile:"s to which they are attached.
The invention consists in the peculiar construction of devices employed for securing the lever in the cylinder, in the peculiar construc tion of the piston, and in the peculiar con struction, arrangement, and combination of the various parts, all as more fully hereinafter described.
Figure l is a perspective view. Fig. 2 is a central vertical section. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section on line a: x.
In the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification, A represents a suitable cylinder, which is designed to be sccured upon a boiler at any convenient point. This cylinder is provided with a piston-rod, B, and carries at its inner end a piston, 0, consisting of the two heads a b, the latter of which is provided with openings 0, through which steam finds inlet into theinterior of the piston. Between these two heads a b, Iplace tWo or more expanding packing-rings, d, the transverse joints of which occur at different points on the periphery of the piston. The headof the piston-rod, outside the cylinder, is provided with the arms 6, to each of which is secured a flexible cable or cord, which leads down under the grooved pulleys D, and thence to the damper in the fine that the device is to regulate.
E is a stuffing-box, cast as an integral part of the cylinder and upon the inside thereof, slightly above the face of the valve F, which is located in the bottom of the cylinder, and closes the communication between the boiler and the cylinder. Into this stuffing-box I in- 50 sort one end of the lever G, provided with rubber or other suitable packing, so as to form a flexible steam-tight joint, the inner end of the lever resting upon the top of the valve F. The outer end of the lever is bent substantially in the form shown, so that the longer 5 5 arm thereof projects at right angles tothe cyl- -inder, and at apoint directly back, or nearly so, of where the lever enters the cylinder, and uponxthis long arm of the lever I hang a weight, H. This lever is pivotally secured within the stuffing-box by a bolt, n, which passes through the walls of the stuffing-box and one wall of the cylinder, and around the inner end of this lever I place an elastic packing, I. By thus fulcruming the lever at a point outside and between its point of contact with the valve, and its long arm I am enabled to make a tighter joint at that point, while the opening through the shell is much. smaller than where the lever is fulcrumed at the eX- treme inner end, or where it passes entirely through the cylinder, and for the further reason that I have to provide for a very slight movement of the lever at the point where it passes through the stuffing-box. The parts being constructed and arranged V substantially as described, the operation is as follows: If it is desired that the device shall be operative under a pressure of sixty-five pounds of steam, the weight upon the lever G is adjusted accordingly. Upon an increase in the boiler-pressure above the sixty-five pounds the valve F is lifted, which allows steam to enter the cylinder, and from thence it passes into the hollow piston-head, causing the packingrings to expand against the inside of the cyl inder, preventing an escape of steam. The pressure causes the piston to travel upward, and by the connection between it and the damper compels such damper to close or partially close relatively with the movement of the piston. As the pressure of steam decreases, the rings in the piston retract, de* creasing. the friction between the parts, and allows the piston to gradually descend by gravity, while the valve also gradually closes and permits-the damper to open.
What I claim as my invention is 1. In combination with the cylinder A and valveF, the lever G, pivotally secured at a point between the valve and the long arm of I box IE, valve F, lever G, and packing I, when 10 the lever, substantially as and for the purposes specified.
2. The combination of the cylinder A, pro- 5 vided With the stuffing-box E, valve F, and lever G, provided with the elastic packing I, substantially as described.
3. The combination of the cylinder A, piston B G, expanding packing-rings cl, stuffingconstructed, arranged, and operating substantially in the manner and for the purposes set forth.
GEORGE WV. SMITH.
