Description

H. I'. NORTON.
BOAT DAVIT.
APPLICATION FILED NOV. 29, 1912.
Patented Sept. 2, 1913.
UNITED srA'rns 'PATENT OFFICE.
HAROLD FREDERICK NORTON, OF NEWPORT NEWS, VIRGINIA.
BOAT-Davila' Application filed November 29, 1912.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, HAROLD F. NORTON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newport News, in the county of Varwick and State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Boat- Davits, of which the following is a specification.
This invention comprises a davit and mechanism for operating it to lift a boat from the deck ot a vessel and swing it outboard into position to be lowered into the water, of the general type shown and described in my prior U. S. Patent, No. 1,011,477, dated December 12, 1911.
As in the above-mentioned patent, the davit is operated by hand-mechanism comprising a non-revoluble member pivoted to the davit between its ends and a revoluble member journaled in a bearing of a deckstool; the non-revoluble member carrying a nut, and the revoluble member having a long screw entering the nut.
It has been found that where there is ri.- gidity of the operating parts against lateral and twisting movement of the davit, the screw and the nut into which it turns are sometimes subjected to cramping strains, when, for some reason, the davit-arm is moved or bends in directions at an angle to the arc of normal oscillation of the screw, or when the davit-arm undergoes slight twisting from the torsional strains imposed upon it.
The object of the present invention is to provide stool and davit connections for the operating screw and its nut, sufiiciently rigid, and yet of such construction as to eliminate strains upon said screw and nut, due to any perverse movement or twisting of the davit-arm.
The apparatus is shown in the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of the davit and its operating mechanism; Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the same, viewed from inboard; Fig. 3 is an end elevation showing in detail the bearings of the operatingscrew, viewed from inboard; and Fig. 4t is a sectional side elevation of the operating members, on a larger scale.
The apparatus illustrated comprises a davit arm 1 of channel steel, pivoted at its lower end 2 to the deck of the vessel at the gunwale, and having a curved and narrowed upper end 3, the tip of which is bent down- Specifcation of Letters Patent.

ward and has a hole Il to receive the hook of the fall-block. A cleat 5 for the blockrope is secured to the lower end oi' the arm. A cylindrical pivot 6 is fixed to the davit arm toward its lower end, and upon this is swiv-eled the eye o't' a collar 7. This collar is provided with a lateral extension 8 having a cross-bore 9 therethrough, adapted to receive a pivot-pin 1t). The pivot-pin is engaged by the upper and lower journaleyes 11a ot' a yoke 11, which carries the tubular sheath 12 and the integral nut 12, ot' the non-revoluble operating member. A cap 12b, within the yoke 11, closes the outboard end of the tubular member, to exclude water and dirt and retain a lubricant.
The nut 12 receives the long screw of the revoluble member 13, a stop-nut llfybeing fixed on the inclosed end of the screw. A hand-crank 13b is removably attached to the revolublc member at its outer end. A bushing 141 is fixed on the revoluble member 13 near its inboard end, heilig screwed thereon against a thrust-nut 15, and held against accidental displacement by a check-collar 1G. Upon the bushing 1li is mounted a collar 17, having oppOsitely-disposed pintles or trunnions 18, and suitable washers 17*l may be interposed between the bushing and the thrust-nut and the collar 17. A yoke- .member 19 and a cap-plate 20 are provided with bearings 2l and 22, respectively, in which are journaled the pintles 1S of the collar 17, washers 22fl being interposed, if desired. The yoke-member 19 is provided with rearwardly-extending portions 23 and 24, having eyes adapted to register with the eyes 25 and 26 of the steel bearing-pads 27 and to receive the bearing-pins 28 (Figs. 1 and 3). The bearing-pads 27 are secured to a deck-stool 29. This stool is built of structural steel, and comprises a vertical member 29a and an inclined member 29", seemed together at their upper ends and riveted at their lower ends to a channelbeam 30, inclosing a wood beam 31 which is secured to the deck-sheathing 32. A. bracket 33 is secured to the channel-member 30 near the gunwale, and a bolt 34 serving as the pivot for the lower end of the davit extends through and is clamped in the two wings of this bracket.
The operation ot' the device is similar to that otl my former patent, and is obvious. A pair of these davits and operating mechanisms is provided for each boat, and require merely that two men, one at each stool, ro:
