HOT-WATER TANK.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, FRANK L. PATTERSON, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, borough of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Hot-Vater Tank, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved hot water tank more especially designed for use in apartmenthouses, hotels, office buildings, stores, garages and other buildings requiring an amplc supply of hot water, and arranged to allow for the expansion and contraction of the steam tubes to insure proper expansion of the exhaust or live steam used as the heating medium, and to readily carry off all the water of condensation without danger of such water accumulating or backing up in the steam tubes.
For the purpose mentioned use is made of an outlet for the hot water, a steam expansion and distributing chamber attached to the shell and connected wit-h a source of steam supply, a condensation chamber attached to the said shell and provided with an outlet for carrying off the water of condensation, the chambers being spaced apart, and a plurality of U-shaped steam tubes extending wholly within the said shell and having their ends connected with the said chambers.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both views.
Figure 1 is a longitudinal sectional elevation of the hot water tank; and Fig. 2 is an enlarged transverse section of the same on the line 22 of Fig. 1.
In ordinary hot water tanks as now generally constructed, use is made of a steam coil within a shell, the coil being usually of the same area as the pipe supplying the same, and hence the efiiciency of the coil is impaired as soon as the steam condenses in the coil. The water of condensation accumulating in the first bends of the coil must naturally flow through all the following ones, and with the additional condensation taking place in the remaining coil surface it frequently happens that more than half of the bends are completely filled with water of condensation and hence their value as a Specification of Letters Patent.

In my invention presently to be described in detail a proper expansion and distribution of the steam is had and the water of condensation is not liable to remain in the steam tubes and is taken care of even should a rapid condensation of steam take place in all the steam tubes. The shell A, of boiler plate or other suitable material, is provided with a cold water inlet B and a hot water outlet C. An expansion and distributing chamber D is secured to the shell A, preferably at the bottom thereof near one end, as plainly shown in Fig. 1, and the said expansion and distributing chamber D is preferably in the form of a saddle having an annular flange D bolted or riveted to the shell, as indicated in the drawings. provided with an integral top D registering with a corresponding opening in the shell A, and the said chamber D is also provided with a body cover D bolted or otherwise fastened in place on the chamber. A pipe E screws into or is otherwise fastened to the cover D and this pipe E is connected with a source of steam supply, either live steam or exhaust steam.
lVithin the shell A are arranged a plurality of independent steam tubes F, prefer ably made U-shape, and each having one end expanded or otherwise secured in the top D of the expansion and distributing chamber D, while the other end of each tube is similarly connected with the top G of a condensation chamber Gr, similar in construction to the expansion and distributing chamber D. The condensation chamber G is saddle shaped and is provided with an annular flange Gr bolted to the shell A, and the chamber G is also provided with a bottom cover G to which is secured by screwing or otherwise a pipe H for carrying off the water of condensation to a suitable place of discharge.
Then the hot water tank is in use steam passes by way of the pipe E into the expansion and distributing chamber D in which the steam is free to expand and is distributed equally to the several steam tubes F through which the steam passes so as to heat the tubes and thus cause a rapid heating of the water contained in the shell A. Any Water of condensation that forms is discharged immediately into the condensation chamber, which is of ample size to accommodate all the water of condensation that The chamber D is may flow out of the pipes or form in the chamberG, it being understood that such water of condensation is immediately conducted out of the chamber G by the pipe H.
The hot water tank shown and described is very simple and durable in construction, and a large amount of heating surface is provided owing to the large number of in dividual tubes F connecting the chambers D and G with each other, so that a rapid heating of the water contained in the shell A takes place. .By making the steam tubes U-shaped they readily expand and contract without danger of becoming locse in the tops D and G of the chambers D and G.
Having thus described my invention, 1 claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
A hot water tank, comprising a closed horizontal shell having a plurality of opeir ings in its under side adjacent each end and provided with an inlet for the cold water and with an outlet for the hot water, a steam expansion and distributing chamber attached to the underside of the shell at one end thereof and depending therefrom, a condensation chamber attached to the under side of the said shell at the other end. thereof and depending from the shell, each chamber having an integral top and a removable cover at the bottom, the tops having apertures registering with the openings of the shell, an inlet pipe attached to the cover of the said expansion and distributing chamber and connected with a source of steam supply, an outlet pipe connected with the cover of the said condensation chamber for carrying of? the water of condensation, and a plurality of U-shaped steam tubes extending wholly within theishell and independent one of the other, the said steam tubes having their ends passing through the openings of the shell and secured in the apertures of the integral tops of the said chambers so that the steam entering the said steam expansion and distributing chamber is expanded therein and equally distributed to the entrance ends of the said steam tubes to pass through the latter into the said condensation chamber, the capacity of the latter being ample to take care of all the water of condensation.
