To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, I'IERMANN GALL, a subject of the Emperor of Austria-Hungary, re siding at Berlin, Germany, have invented new and useful Improvements in Chain Adding-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to such chain adding-machines, in which the number wheels of the addingand checking-work are arranged in known manner at the side of the chain, the latter being fitted with a leveling device, consisting of a pair of rollers acting on the lower lap of the chain; of these rollers the one is stationary, the other journaled on a lever under action of a spring, and adapted to be pressed against the teeth of the chain, so that always one pair of teeth will bear against the periphery of the roller and encircle the upper portion of the same. Contrary to known arrangements of this kind the essential feature and improvement according to the present invention consists in that the number-wheels of the addingand checking-work are so journaled at the turning points of the upper and lower chainbights, that when the chain is at rest the number-wheels may be freely turned with respect to the chain teeth projecting from the bights of the chain adjacent the rollers, for instance for returning them into 0-position, whereas when the chain is traveling the teeth of the chain will operatively engage with those of the numlJ61\Yl1QlS. This arrangement .is of considerable importance for the reliable operation of calculatingmachines with chaindrive operated by hand by means of a style.
In Figures 1 and 2 of the accompanying drawing two constructional forms of a chain adding-machine according to the present invention are shown.
The endless chain, which is fitted in known manner with teeth, and which according to the constructional form shown in Fig. 1 runs over the rollers 5 and 8 mounted on the spindles a and 7, respectively, is carried with its upper lap over a platform 14, rigidly secured to the partition walls of the countenwork. The number-wheels 3, 2 of the addingand checkingavork are journaled at the side of the guide-rollers 5, 8 at such a distance from the bights of the chainlinks, that when the chain 6 is at rest, the sprockets 3, 2 may be turned and their teeth will be free from engagement with the lugs of the chain 6 so that the sprockets can be turned freely. When, however, the chain is traveling, an operative engagement between chain and number-wheels will be effected without need of a lever-gear lifting the chain. For this purpose the chain 6 must, after being released, be so adjusted that two lugs assume a position as shown in Fig. l relatively to the number-wheels 3, 2. This is obtained by means of a pair of rollers 9, 11 acting on the lower chain-lap. Roller 9 runs on a pin 10, secured in the wall 1, and roller 11 is fitted to the lever 12 pivotally mounted on pin 13 and forced by a spring 1 1 against the teeth 15, 16 of the chain. This chain is therefore clasped by the rollers 9, 11 and roller 11 is made of such a circumferonce, that when the roller enters between a pair of teeth, the periphery of the roller will not come in contact with the chain-link itself so that frictional contact is avoided. The provision of these two rollers is such that when the chain 6 is released, even if it is in such a position that only one tooth 15 rests on the periphery of the roller 11, the latter will under action of the spring 1 1 tend to enter into the gap between two teeth 15, 16 and will so adjust the chain, that the teeth of different chains will be held in the same direction, and the chain 6 will be so adjusted, that the teeth at the bight of the chains, and the number-wheels, will not touch while at rest, but will operatively engage when the chain is advanced.
As shown in Fig. 2 the above described arrangement may also be employed with advantage in such calculating machines, which have more than two counter-works.
As illustrated in Fig. 2, a rectangular chain construction is shown at the bights or apexes of which wheels 2, 2 and 3 are disposed. Guide rollers 5, 5, 8 and 8 are provided for the chains 6 and the latter run over supports 14 and 14 as illustrated. The arrangement of locking rollers 10, 11, as shown in Fig. 1 is duplicated at 10 and 11.
WVhat I claim as my invention and desire to secure by United States Letters Patent 1s:-
1. A chain adding machine comprising in combination, chain rollers, a link chain trained about said rollers and provided with wheel operating teeth, toothed checking and adding wheels disposed in a position to bring their teeth within the operative range of the teeth of said chain when the same is combination, chain rollers, a link chain trained about said rollers and provided with wheel operating teeth, toothed checking and adding wheels disposed adjacent said rollers and in a posit-ion to bring their teeth within operative range of the teeth of said chain when the same is being actuated, and mechanism engaging said chain to arrest movement thereof and ina position to free the teeth of said chain from engagement with the teeth of said wheels, substantially as described.

A chain adding machine comprising in combination, a chain composed of relatively elongated links provided with wheel actuating teeth near the end portions of said links, polygonal rollers for said teeth having chain engaging portions to correspond to the length of the links of said chain, toothed checking and adding wheels disposed adjacent said rollers with their teeth in operative range of the teeth of said chain when the chain is being actuated, and roller mech anism for arresting movement of the chain when the rollers are in a position'to free the teeth of said chain from operative range with'respect to the teeth of said wheel, substantially as described.

A chain adding machine comprising in combination, a chain composed of relatively elongated links provided with wheel actuating teeth near their end portions, polygonal rollers for said chain having chain engaging faces proportioned to correspond to the length of the links of said chain, toothed checking and adding wheels disposed adjacent said rollers with their teeth in opera tive range of the teeth of said chain when the chain is being actuated, said rollers being disposed at one side of a horizontal line intersecting the axis of said rollers, and roller mechanism for arresting movement of said chain. when the rollers are in a position to free the teeth of the chain from operative range ofthe teeth of said wheels, substantially as described.
