To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LESTER M. STARR, a citizen of the United States, residing at Toledo, in the county of Lincoln, State of C'regon, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Attachments for Sewing-h lachines; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to an improved adj ustable presser foot gage attachment for sewing machines and the primary object of the invention is to provide an improved and simple form of gage attachment which may be readily attached to the presser bars of machines in general use and which may be used for accurately stitching a series of scams or the like in proper relation to each other.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a gage attachment which is capable of adjustment and which will permit regulation of the space between rows of stitches upon opposite sides of the presser bar.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists of certain other combinations and arrangements of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed, it being a still further object of the invention to provide a device which will not be likely to get out of working order.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a front elevation of a fragmentary portion of the head of a machine arm, showing my improved gage attachment connected to the presser foot bar thereof. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the attachment removed. Fig. 3 is an end elevation of the device. Fig. 4 is a sectional view taken on the line 4:4: of Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a sectional view taken on the line 5 5 of Fig. 2, and engaged with the bar. Fig. 6 is a detail perspective view of the presser foot for the gage. Fig. 7 is a similar View of one of the gage pointers or indicators.
In the ordinary use of bed plate gages in connection with sewing machines, it is necessary to move the work over the gage, thereby partially hiding the gage from view and interfering with the proper and accurate spacing of the lines of stitches in making lap seams or the like and to avoid these obwhich the work will pass under the indicating members of the gage, thereby permitting the same to be in view at all times and greatly facilitating the accurate operation of the device. lVith this purpose in view, I provide a presser foot 10 which has a flanged end portion 11 and which carries a screw shank 12, said shank being adapted to extend through longitudinal slots 13 and 14 in a pair of gage bars or strips 15 and 16 respectively with their outer longitudinal edges abutting the flange 11 so as to hold the bars in alinement when clamped by a knurled binding nut 17 engaged upon the screw shank 12.
The head 18 of the machine arm carries the usual presser foot bar 19 provided with clamping nuts 20 and manipulated in the usual manner by a gib 21 so as to raise the same from the work or lower the foot in contact with the work being operated upon and in order to secure the gage to the presser foot bar, the foot 10 is provided with an angular offset 22 which terminates in a portion 23 positioned parallel with relation to the foot portion which carries the screw shank 12 inwardly of the flange portion .11 and having an opening 2 1 therethrough where bent to form said parallel portion and adapted for receiving the usual needle 25 when the foot is secured to the presser foot bar so that the bars or strips 15 and 16 will extend from the forward face of the bar. The remaining extremity of the foot is then bent at right angles upwardly as shown at 26 and offset for properly engaging the presser foot bar 1 by means of the extension or attaching member 27 which is bent at right angles to the portion upon a plane rearwardly of the foot proper and formed with a notch 28 receiving the presser foot bar, to hold the gage in a rigid position by means of the nuts 20. By this means the gage is supported at a proper height to permit the work or materials op erat-ed upon to pass under the indicating de vices carried by the bars now to be described.
Further inspection of the drawings will reveal the fact that the bar 15 is provided with a further longitudinal slot 29 spaced from the slot 13 and positioned centrally of the width of the strip or bar in a similar manner as the slots 18 and 14 are positioned while the inner end portions of each of the jections, I provide a gage attachment in 1 bars is provided with an offset tongue 30 which is in the form of a projection stamped laterally from said ends and adapted to engage in the respective slots of the opposite bars to guide the said bars during their ad justn ent longitudinally with relation to each other and thereby varying the length of the gage. Pointers or indicators 31 of tapered formation are provided with flanged portions 32 at their enlarged ends engaged around the forward longitudinal edges 01 the bars or strips in a similar manner as the flange portion 11 and each of said indicators carries a screw shank 33 secured to the same as shown at 34 and adapted to slide in the respective slots 29 and 1% whereby they may be adjusted at various distances from the presser bar or foot by means of binding nuts 35 engaged thereon thus disposing the marking edges 36 of the pointers or indicators along the various division marks 37 into which the bars are measured.
From the foregoing description in connection with the accompanying drawings, it will be apparent that when the gage is attached to the presser foot bar of a sewing machine and the pointers depend from the adjustable slotted bars, that the said pointers may be set at various distances to be left between the rows of stitches and permitting the operation to be carried out in an effective and accurate manner. It may also be stated that either of the respective bars 15 and 16 may be used separately with the attaching member should the distances between the rows of stitches not require the full length of the bars when connected.
Iclaim:
1. In an adjustable presser foot gage attachment for sewing machines, the combination with the presser foot bar thereof; of an angularly bent foot member having an offset and an attaching portion for engagement with the presser foot bar, a clamping member carried by the foot member, a pair of gage bars slidably and adj ustably connected to the foot member and pointers adjustable along each bar, each of said pointers comprising tapered sections having their enlarged ends bent upwardly to contact with the front edges of the bars and clamping members carried by each pointer and operating through the top of the bars, said pointers permitting the passage of the material acted upon therebeneath.
2. In an adjustable presser foot gage attachment for sewing machines, the combination with the presser foot bar thereof; of a foot member engaged with the bar, a pair of gage bars slidably and adjustably connected to the foot members, each of said gage bars being longitudinally slotted, lugs carried by the extremity of each bar for operation in the slots to hold said bars in alinement and adjustable pointers carried bythe gage bars.
3. In a presser foot gage attachment for sewing machines, a presser foot, means for rigidly connecting the foot to the presser foot bar of the machine, a slotted bar adjustably engaged with the foot and supported in a horizontal position, a second bar also carried by the foot and having a slottherein for receiving a portion of the first slotted bar to guide the latter in a line with the second slotted bar, one of said bars having a plurality of slots spaced apart whereby the same is adapted for use independently of the other bar and a pointer carried by each of the respective slotted bars and adjustable along the division marks upon the bars at various distances from a line of stitching, all of said bars being located on a line above the engaging face of the foot.
