To all whom 'it may concern Be it known that I, EDWARD B. Coornn, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Oak Lane, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Parallel-Adil]stment Mechanism for Cameras, of which the following is a speeilication.
Objects of the present invention are to provide for accurately, easily and 'apidly adjusting the front and back of a camera, or the like, while maintaining parallelism of the elements in all positions; to provide ample and sufficient rigidity in lateral direction; to improve, simplify and lighten the means and mechanism by which the front and back are adjusted in focusing, and to provide adjusting means which not only support the front and back and the parts carried thereby, but also serves to shift both the front and back in respect to *the middle.
The invention will be claimed at the end hereo-f, but will first be described in connection with the embodiment of it chosen, among other embodiments of it, for illustration in the accompanying drawings, in whicl1- Figure 1, is a top or plan view, partly in section. Fig. 9., a side view partly in section on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an end View partly in section of the central frame and support, and Fig. 1, is a side view similar to Fig. 2, with the bellows closed.
In the drawings 1 and 2 are the front and back of a camera, or in other words, the two elements which are to be shifted in parallelism in order to focus. Each of these elements is provided at either side with a pivot 3, and with a slidable carriage s', the latter running in ways 5, slotted at 6 and formed in the vertical sides of the parts 1 and 2. Each carriage may be provided with rollers, of which some 7 bear on one wall of the ways and of which the others 8, bear on the opposite walls of the ways. The frame consists of a base 9 carried by the support 10 which may include a universal joint and tripod, not shown, because they are well understood. The frame also comprises a top member 11 and a pair of standards 12. Each standard is provided with a pair of arm-guides or slots 13 and 111 and with a nut-guide or slot 15. 16, are nuts Specification of Letters Patent.

arranged in the nut-guides or slots 15. 1T and 18 are oppositely disposed brackets connected with the nuts and standards. The screws 19, bevel. gears 2O and 2l, shaft Q2 and handle 23 constitute a screw-gear for working the nuts.
There are pairs of crossed pivotal arms 211 and 25 having con'ipleniental circular parts 26 and circular ways 27. 2S, are the pivots for these arms and at 9.7 the arm 211 has a circular undercut that receives the beveled edge 29 of the arm 25. The object of this construction, as of the construction to be further described, is to `impart lateral rigidity. One of the ends of the arms of each pair works through one of the arm slots and is pivotally connected with the brackets 17 and 18 and the other ends of the arms of the pair are pivotally connected with a carriage a and a pivot 3.

Evidently by turning the handle 23 the nuts 16 are shifted up or down, turning the pairs of arms about their centers 28 and thus shifting the elements 1 and Q toward and away from the frame and toward and away from each other. This is the movement required for focusing. The described pivotal connection between the arms of each pair, as well as the arrangement of the arms so as to work in the arm slots, gives the camera the necessary rigidity. The frame and lthe arms constitute the sole support of the camera so that it can be folded into a very compactspace as shown in Fig. 4, while at the same time. it can be made as long as necessary.
lVhat I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- 1. The combination with two elements to be shifted in parallelism of, a frame between the elements and provided with fixed pivots, a pair of nuts vertically movable in the frame and provided with pivots, a screw gear for working the nuts, and pairs of crossed pivotal arms, one arm of each pair having one of its ends pivoted to one of said frame pivots and the other of its ends slidably and pivot-ally connected with one of said elements and the other arm of the pair pivoted 'at one end to one of said elements and pivoted at the other end to one of the nut pivots, substantially as described.

The combination with the two elements to be shifted in parallelism of pivots and slidable carriages carried respectively by said elements, fixed standards each provided with a pair ot' arm-guides or slots and Withl a nut-guide or slot, nuts respectively arranged in the nut-guides or slots, oppositely disposed brackets connected respectively With the nuts and standards, a screw-gear for Working the nuts, and pairs of crossed pivotal arms having` complemental circular center parts and circular Ways and having one of the ends of the arms of each pair Working' through one of the arm slots and respectively pivotally connected With said brackets and the other ends of the arms of the pair respectively connected With 'said carriage and pivotj substantially as described.
3. The combination With the tivoelements to be shifted in parallelism, of standards each provided With a pair of arm-guides or slots, nuts movable in respect to the respective standards, a screw-gear for Working the nuts, and two pairs of crossed pivotal arms for each standard, each pair ot arms having complemental circular center parts and circular Ways and having` one ot the end portions of each arm of each pair Working through one of the arm slots and respectively suitably connected with the nut and bracket and the other of the ends of the arms of the pair suitably connected with said elements, substantially as described.
4. The combination with the tivo elements to be shifted in parallelism, of standards, brackets respectively movable in respect to the standards, means for moving` the brackets, and pairs of crossed pivotal arms having complemental circular parts and circular Ways and having one of the ends of the arms of each pair respectively pivotally connected with one of said brackets and With one of the standards and the other ends of the arms of the pair and slidably pivotally connected With one of said elements, substantially as described.
