To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, AnoLr ELEFANT, subject of the Emperor of Austria-Hungary,
' residing at Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angelcs and State of California, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Window-Shutters, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in window shutters, and the object of my invention is to provide a'shutter that may be easily rolled up or down, with open or closed slats, and which may be extended and locked in a slanting position from the window. I attain this object by means of the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which+ Figure 1 is a rear elevation of the shutter closed. Fig. 2 is a cross sectional view of Fig. 1 on the line X'X. Fig. 3 "is a broken view of one corner of the shutter and easing showing the slats drawn apart. Fig.4 is a sectional viewof Fig. 3 on line X -X Fig. 5 is a similar view to Fig. 3 showing the shutter slats closed. Fig. 6 is an enlarged detail view of the ratchet belt wheel and the locking lever. Fig. 7 is an enlarged detail view-of the extension arm. Fig. 8 is a side view of Fig. 7. Fig. 9 is a View showing a cranking method of turning the ratchet wheel.
My shutter is composed of a plurality of slats adjustably attached to linked bands adapted to carry the shutter to and around a roller at the top of "the window casing. The slats 13, may be made of wood or of metal and of any desired width. They are secured to the linked bands 12, by means of the pins, let, on the band engaging the slots 13 in the slats. These slots allow enough play'to cause the slats toscparate and leave an open space between theinwhen partly drawn up. The linked bands, 12, have the upper ends secured to the roller 3, in the roller box 2, the said roller being journaled in the bearings 5 in the casing 1 by the pins 4, On one end of the roller 3 is fixed the drum 6, on which is reeled the belt 7. This belt runs over the roller 6 on the inside face of the casing and down the casing to the plate 8, and through the slot 9 in said plate to the drum 18, which is provided with the ratchet 19. The locking lever 20, whose wheel from back movement.

The shutters are confined in the grooved frame 12" which fills the window casing movably and is hinged at 23, and the whole shutter may be extended from the hinge 23 outward and held locked in that position by means of the extension arm 15, which is hinged at its ends to thebottom of the shutter frame and the casing respectively, and locked by the knuckle joint 16, the crank handle 17 being used to extend and lock the arm.
As shown in Fig. 9, instead of pulling on the belt 7, I may use the crank 29 on the crank shaft 26 in the bearings 27, and on which is formed the pinion 28 adapted to engage the gear 25 on the drum.
The shutter may be pulled entirely or partly up, or let entirely down at,will, and locked by the locking lever 20, and the looking hook .24 and the slats of the shutter opened or closed by a short pull or loosen ing of the friction belt 7 respectively. These slats fitting together in a notched tongue and groove manner make the shutter fire proof and wind proof as well as light proof. The provision for extending the bottom of the shutter out from the casing allows the entrance of air and light While shading the window from sunlight and storms.
What I claim as my invention and desire Letters Patent for, is
In a window shutter the combination with a frame, of a plurality of slats slidably mounted on a link band in said frame,
means for connecting said slats with said band, and means for slidably regulating the openings between said slats.
