WALTER COVENTRY, OF PENDLETON, SALFOBD, ENGLAND.
BURNER FOR INCANDESCENT GAS-LIGHTING.
To all whom 2'25 may concern Be it known that I, I VALTEP. COVENTRY, a British subject, residing at Pendleton, Sal- :tord, county of Lancaster, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Burners for Incandescent Gas- Lighting, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to annular burners :tor incandescent gas lighting having perforations or outlets for the gas on the under side and a gas inlet chamber above the outlet perforations to which an inverted mantle is applied. I find in these annular burn ers for incandescent gas lighting, when made of large diameter and with a single gas inlet chamber, that it is not practicable with gas at a low pressure to draw in suflicient air, or to obtain an even distribution of the mixture of gas and air over all the gas outlet perforations at a pressure high enough to incandesce the mantle equally at all points.
The invention consists of an annular burner constructed with or divided by par titions into two or more chambers and fitted with a corresponding number of gas and air inlet pipes, one inlet pipe to each chamber of the burner.
Referring to the drawings Figure 1. is a sectional elevation. Fig. 2. is a sectional plan on line ac-m Fig. 1, showing a burner with two compartments. Fig. 3. is a sec tional plan, showing three compartments.
Fig. 4. is a plan of the underside showing the nipples, nozzles or perforations of the burner.
The burner A is constructed of annular shape to receive an annular inverted mantle A, and is provided with outlet perfora- Specification of Letters Patent.

tions or nozzles B. The air and gas cham her I divide into compartments a, (6 Fig. 2, or a, a a Fig. 3, by partitions a which may be cast with the body of the burner or may be fitted into it and secured in any suitable way.
To each compartment or chamber a sepa rate inlet pipe 5, I2 Fig. 2, or Z), Z2 6 Fig. 3, is attached so that the gaseous lniX- ture is supplied to the several compartments independently or" one another although at the same pressure. This gives a very even distribution of the gaseous mixture to all the nozzles B of the burner and consequently an even incandescence of the mantle at all points. The inlet pipes may be placed equidistant around the burner, as shown, and they may be regulated in any suitable manner.
This construction of burner enables only a part or sect-ion of the mantle of the burner to be ignited at one time so that one or more sections of the burner can be employed according to the intensity of the light required.
What I claim as my invention and desire to protect by Letters Patent is An inverted annular burner for incandescent gas lighting provided with a plurality of compartments for the gaseous mixture, with a separate inlet pipe fitted to each compartment, and with a plurality of outlet perforations, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
WALTER COVENTRY.
