To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE E. \VA z niN, a citizeuo't the United States, resi ing at Boston, in the county of Sufioll: a State of ll'lfiSSilCliUSQlllS, have invented certain new and usei nl lmproyen e ts Sewing-Machines; and i do hereby declare the t'ollowing to be a full, clear, and exact deseriptio of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it app'ertains to nia-lte and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in shuttle mechanism forsewing machines.
This is a division of the application filed by the inventor March 16, 1903, Serial Number 147,888, tor'an improvement in sewing machines.
The invention is particularly adapted for use in machines of the wax th ead, lock stitch strai ht hook needle type of which the commercial harness and leather na: chines are examples, and its object i to pduce shuttle mechanism of simple conc-tion and capable of operating with preeisi'on at speeds and with nlninium vibration.
To the above ends the shuttle of the present invention rotated constantly one direction in order to avo d the vibration and stress upon the driving mechanism which occurs i the case. an oscillatory or reciprocat ng shuttle, operating at h gh speed, and the shuttle is given, n addition to its rotation, an oscillatory or tipping movement toward and from the path of the needle and the loop of thread drawn by the needle, so that the shuttle may take the loop from the needle without the inter nediation of any other instrunientality than the needle, and so that after thus e gagi i the loo the shuttle may retreat and alibi-d the needle and its actuating mechan sm a clear space in which to perform their succeeding movements,

The thrust upon the needle is borne by a pin 7 fixed to the slide 2. When the nut 5 is loosened the needle may be swung to one side to permit the removal of the bobbin from the shuttle. A spring 5 fixed to the slide 2 engages the inner side of the nut 5 to preventlooseness of the parts when the nut 5 is unscrewed. The needle slide is actuated by a co n roll 8 engaging a cam ath in the cam disk 10 fixed on the d iving shaft M. The shuttle S is substantially circular in form and rqtates in a car ier 16. The shuttle thread is carried by a obbin in a bobbin holder 11 loosely mounted in the shuttle and resti'ained, from rotation therewith by means of a retainer 13 wh ch is fixed by a nut 1% to the shuttle carrier and engages a nose 12 on the bobbin holder, thpoughKvbich the shuttle thread is delivered. The nut 14 may be loosened and the bobbin retainer swungaside to remove the bobbin, The shuttle is provided with a notch and a point 15 by which the needle loop is engaged and carried about the shuttle ,by the rotation thereof.
