Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, Josnr GRANZ, a subject of the German Emperor, residing at Plauen, in Vogtland, in the Kingdom of Saxony, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shuttle Embroidering-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to automatic shuttle embroidering machines and more particularly to shuttle exchanging means.
The object of this invention is to provide means whereby shuttles containin thread of different color can be exchanged automatically and during the operation of the machine at any period in order to save time and prevent the loss of even a single stitch.
Hitherto the exchange of shuttles for embroidery work with different threads, has been done by hand and necessitated the stopping of the machine. which naturally occasioned loss of time and frequently also of stitches.
The problem involved is to enable the ex change of shuttles without vertical adjustment of sluggish masses in such short periods of time as between two successive stitches. I
My invention will be fully understood by reference to the accompanying drawing in which similar reference characters denote corresponding parts and in which my new mechanism is more or less diagrammatically illustrated, Figure 1 being a side elevation of an automatic embroidering machine having inclined shuttle guides for designs of certain repeats; Fig. 2 is a rear view of the machine showing the shuttle guides and shuttles in the upper and lower tiers; Fig. 3 is a sectional plan view of the shuttle guides; Fig. l shows a side elevation of an automatic embroidering machine having horizontal shuttle guides for designs of dif ferent repeats and with a modified form of my new mechanism; Fig. 5 shows a front elevation of the modified shuttle mechanism; Fig. 6 is a top plan view of the modified shuttle mechanism; and Fig. 7 is a modification of a detail.
Referring specifically to the drawing a denotes the stitching needles, b I) the shuttle guides and 6, b b b 5 etc. the shuttles. There may be. any number of shuttles for each needle, according to the design to be embroidered, but in the present example two shuttles for each needle are shown, as seen from Figs. 2, and 5, and in the shuttles denoted by the reference with uneven marks thread of one color and in those with even marks thread with a different color may be contained. one color is finished, it is desired to em broider with a different color the shuttles have to be displaced so as to bring one set thereof out of and the other set into operation. This is accomplished automatically through the control of the jacquard by my new shuttle changing mechanism.
Let 0 denote the jacquard drum, d the perforated jacquard card and e the jacquard needle which is to control my new shuttle changing mechanism. The jacquard needle 0 is controlled through the medium of a special perforation (not shown) provided in the jacquard card (Z in the ordinary manner.
f denotes the main driving shaft of the machine which carries a gear 9 meshing with a smaller gear 71. carried by a shaft 2'. Fixed on the shaft i is a cam j which through a rod 7' and lever 7' fulcrumed to the stationary frame at y' imparts the usual reciprocating motion to the jacquard drum 0. hen the perforation in the jacquard card designed for the control of my new mechanism is brought into the range of the jacquard needle 6 while the jacquard drum 0 is swung toward the latter by the operation of the cam 7', the needle as usually will not be displaced from the position shown (Fig. 1). An arm 70 extending in the path of the needle 6 is pivoted to a double armed lever Z at the point it" and is actuated by a spring 76 which normally draws the arm downwardly so as to hold its projection or nose 76 in engagement with a bar or rod on connected to the jacquard drum operating lever j", which takes place when the perforation above referred to, is not in the range of the needle 6 while the jacquard cylinder 0 swings toward it. The needle 6 will swing the arm 70 around its fulcrum is without moving the lever Z. But when the needle 6 is not shifted from its position the jacquard drum 0- through the medium of the bar on engaging the arm 71: will move the latter and thereby swing the double armed lever Z around its f c m Z.
If after the embroidery with The inclined shuttle guides 6", I) in the upper and lower tiers are fixed to horizontally displaceable rails n n (Fig. 2) which are fed by worm spindles 0 0 borne in the stationary frame 70 of the machine and carrying gears 0, 0 These gears mesh respectively with racks g, 9 formed on a bar g. Meshing also with the gear 0 of the lower tier is a rack 1 which is suitably mounted at 7", so as to be capable of slight swinging and longitudinally reciprocating movements. At an intermediate point the bar or rack 1' is provided with a longitudinal recess or groove 7 in which movably engages the free arm Z of the double armed lever Z. At its lower end the rack 1" is formed with notches 9, r arranged at opposite sides thereof. The notch r is adapted at times to be brought into engagement with either one of two stationary pins 8, s and the notch r is adapted at times to engage the arm 25 of a double armed lever 17, which is fulcrumed at t .and which with its other arm engages a cam 24 fixed on the main driving shaft f of the machine. 7 The gear 9 on the shaft f has double the diameter of that of gear h and consequently will transmit to the cam u a rotary motion with half the speed of that of the cam 7', whereby the lever 25 will be caused to execute a single stroke in one direction during a complete revolution of the cam 7', and the lever arm t be enabled to be coupled with the bar 1" once when it is in lower position and another time when in upper position.
The operation is as follows: As long as the perforation designed for the control of my new shuttle changing mechanism is not in the range of the jacquard needle 6 the latter will be shifted to the right swinging the arm 7: out of engagement with the bar m so that the jacquard will not affect the shuttles. When the perforation is brought into the range of the needle 6 the latter will not be shifted but remain in the position shown and the arm is which by its spring 10 is drawn into and held in the notch provided in the free end of the bar m whereby it is coupled to the latter so that it will be shifted to the right when the drum 0, together with the bar m, moves to the right, in consequence of which the double armed lever Z will be rocked around its pivot Z. The arm Z of the double armed lever Z engaging the longitudinal groove r in the rack will swing to the left and draw along with it the bar 1'. Normally the spring 1" holds the rack r in engagement with the lower stationary pin 8 which locks the bar r in its lower position. By the movement of the arm Z to the left,
- the bar '1 against the tension of its spring 7' will be drawn off the stationary pin a and brought into engagement with its notch r with the lever t of the constantly swinging lever 25. When the arm t swings from its full line position into the dotted line position Fig. l, the rack r is moved upwardly feeding the gears 0, 0 as heretofore described. Nhen the lever arm 5 reaches the dotted line position, the arm Z of the lever Z will be swung back to the right unlocking the bar 7' from the lever t. The bar 7* by its spring 1" will then be drawn toward and caused to engage the stationary pin 5', which will lock it in its upper position.
The feeding of the gears 0, 0 will cause the worm spindles 0 G to turn, which will feed the rails a n carrying the shuttle guides a distance equal to the repeat and thus displace the shuttles containing the thread of one color by the shuttles containing the thread of another color.
A second special perforation in the jacquard card (not shown) will at the proper time be brought into the range of the jacquard needle 0 to bring about the movement of the rack r in reverse direction and thereby readjust the sets of shuttles.
In the construction according to Figs. l, 5 and 6 the machine has horizontal shuttle guides arranged for say G/d, 12/4, etc. repeats. In this case the spindle 0 engages the shuttle drivers or driving rails '11 instead of the shuttle guide rails m a as in the first instance. their motion through gears 0 from the rack bar 1' in a similar manner as in the first case.
In order to shorten the stroke of the lever t and that of the rack 1", and reduce the number of turns to be given to the worm spindles, the spindle 0 may be provided at one end with left thread as at 0 (Fig. 7). By virtue of this structure the drivers with longer shuttles for larger repeats can be displaced in the same time period, without requiring any additional mechanism.
It will be seen that by my new means, the shuttles can be exchanged automatically and suddenly during the operation of the machine at any period, even at the time the needles have passed out of the fabric, 2'. 6. when the tambour frame is being displaced, so that not a single stitch will be lost nor any time wasted.
Since various other modifications may be made in the construction without departing from the principle of my invention, I do not wish to restrict myself to the structures and details described and shown.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In an automatic shuttle embroidering machine, the combination with driving means, sets of shuttles and a jacquard mechanism, of a shuttle change mechanism comprising motion transmitting means means operated from said jacquard mechanism and a coupling means between said driving means and said motion transmitting means actuated by said jacquard operated The spindles here receive a meansonly at predetermined times and during other times being rendered ineffective.
2. In an automatic shuttle embroidering machine, the combination with driving means, sets of shuttles and a jacquard mechanism including jacquard drum operating means and a jacquard needle, of a shuttle change mechanism comprising motion transmitting means, means actuated by said jacquard drum operating means and coupling means between said driving means and said motion transmitting means which at predetermined times is actuated by said means actuated by said jacquard drum operating means and at other times is rendered ineffective by said jacquard needle.
3. In an automatic shuttle embroidering machine, the combination with driving means, sets of shuttles and a jacquard mechanism including jacquard drum operating means and a jacquard needle, of a shuttle change mechanism comprising motion transmitting means, means actuated by said jacquard drum operating means and a coupling mechanism between said driving means and said motion transmittingmeans, said coupling mechanism including a fulcrumed member which at predetermined times is actuated by said means actuated by said jacquard drum operating means and at other times is ineilectively swung upon its fulcrum by said jacquard needle.
4. In an automatic shuttle embroidering machine, the combination with driving means, sets of shuttles and a jacquard mechanism including jacquard drum operating means and a jacquard needle, of a shuttle mechanism comprising motion transmitting means, means operated from said jacquard drum operating means, and a coupling mechanism including a member between said driving means and said motion transmitting means capable of swinging and longitudinal movements, and a fulcrumed member operatively connected to said first member and adapted at predetermined times to be actuated by said means actuated by said jacquard drum operating means and at other times to be inefiectively swung upon its fulcrum by said jacquard needle.
5. In an automatic shuttle embroidering machine, the combination with driving means, sets of shuttles and a jacquard mechanism including jacquard drum operating means and a jacquard needle, of a shuttle change mechanism comprising motion transmitting means including a gear, means operated from said jacquard drum operating means, and a coupling mechanism between said driving means and said motion transmitting means and including a rack meshing with said gear and capable of swinging and longitudinal movements, a lever operatively connected to saidrack and a member fulcrumed to said lever and adapted at predeterminedtimes to be actuated. by. said means. actuated by said jacquard drumopcrating means and at other times tov be 1n effectively swung upon its fulcrum by said means and a coupling mechanism between said driving means and said motion transmitting means, said coupling mechanism including a rack meshing with said gear and capable of swinging and longitudinal movements, means for locking said rack in position, a lever operatively connected to said rack and a member fulcrumed to said lever and adapted at predetermined times to be actuated by said means actuated by said jacquard drum operating means and at other times to be ineifectively swung upon its fulcrum by said jacquard needle.
7. In an automatic shuttle embroidering machine, the combination with driving means, sets of shuttles and a jacquard mechanism including a jacquard card cylinder and a jacquard needle, of a shuttle change mechanism comprising motion transmitt-ing means including a gear, a member reciprocated by the jacquard drum operating means and a coupling mechanism between said driving means and said motion transmitting means, said coupling mechanism including a slotted rack meshing with said gear and capable of swinging and longitudinal movements, a double armed lever engaging with one arm in the slot of said rack and a member fulcrumed to the other arm of said lever and adapted at predetermined times to be engaged with and actuated by the reciprocated member and at other times to be rendered inoperative by the said jacquard needle.
8. In an automatic shuttle embroidering machine, the combination with driving means, including a constantly swinging member, sets of shuttles and a jacquard mechanism including acquard drum operating means and a jacquard needle, of a shuttle change mechanism comprising motion transmitting means including a gear, a member reciprocated by the jacquard drum operating means and a coupling mechanism including a slotted rack meshing with said gear and capable of swinging and longitudinal movements, said rack being capable of engaging the said constantly swinging member, locking means for said rack, a double armed lever engaging with one arm in the slot of said rack, a spring actuated member fulcrumed to the other arm of said double iso armed lever and adapted at predetermined times to be engaged with and actuatedby said reciprocated member and at other times to be rendered inoperative by the said jacquard needle.
9. In an automatic shuttle embroidering machine, sets of shuttles, a shuttle exchange mechanism, comprising Worm spindles'and a jacquard controlled rack for operating said spindles to displace the said shuttles 13 during the operation of the machine.
