BUNG-RETAINER, AND SEAL.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOSEPH POPPER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New York, Flatbush, borough of Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Bung-Retainer and Seal, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to improvements in combined bung retainers and seals, and has for an object to provide an improved structure which will not only prevent accidental removal of the bung, but will also protect the bung against unauthorized removal.
A further object of the invention is to provide a combined sealing and retaining strip adapted to engage the bung and the surrounding part of the barrel adjacent the bung so as to retain the bung in place, there being formed in connection with the strip a sealing member connected with the bung and overlapping the retaining strip so that when the retaining strip is removed the sealing member will be broken.
In carrying out the objects of the invention, a strip of metal is provided, formed with a depressed portion, or if the metal is made comparatively thin, is made with a pressed down portion having an aperture therein. This pressed down portion or de pressed portion is fitted into a recess in the bung and the ends of the strip are caused to overlap the barrel in order to have securing means placed therein for holding the strip in position. In this depressed portion is arranged a sealing member, either paper or wax, which is directly connected with the bung and overlaps the strip in order that when the strip is removed by any one the seal will be broken. If desired, depressed portions could be arranged at each end of the stri for receiving the sealing means instead o arranging the depression over the bung. This will have the same result except that a recessed bung will not be necessary nor need the bung be affected in any way.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indi cate corresponding parts in all the views.

In the transportation of barrels or kegs containing liquid, it has been found that the bungs oftentimes become accidentally removed unless the same are secured in place by some retaining means, as for instance a strip of metal tacked or secured in some way to the keg or barrel and caused to press against the bung. This way of holding the bung in place is very satisfactory as far as the retaining of the bung is concerned, but does not in any way prevent the unauthorized opening of the barrel and again closing the same after some of the contents have been removed. In order to obviate the unauthorized opening and then closing of the barrel, a retaining strip has been formed, as shown in the accompanying drawings provided with a sealing portion and a seal which must be broken when the retaining strip is removed. In this way the device mechanically holds the bung properly in place and by the arrangement of the seal, the bung cannot be removed and replaced without detection.
Referring to the accompanying drawings by numerals, 1 indicates part of a barrelor keg of any kind, provided with a bung 2 formed in any desired manner and provided with a recessed portion in which a pressed down portion 3 of strip 4 is fitted, as clearly shown in Figs. 3 and 4:. The strip 4: is secured to the barrel 1 in any desired manner, as for instance tacks or screws, whereby the strip acts as a mechanical 're taining member for holding the bung 2 against accidental removal. The pressed down portion 3 is provided with an opening 5 so that when the sealing wax 6 is placed I l in the pressed down portion 3 the same will engage the bung 2. If desired, a pin 7 of any size may be driven into the bung 2 and the head thereof covered with the wax (3. When the pin 7 is used the head thereof is not driven into contact with the bung 2 but is spaced therefrom so as to allow some of the wax to pass beneath the head. After the wax has been placed in position, an impression is to be made therein which completes the seal. This impression may be the name of the person transporting the barrel or package, or any configuration which of course could not be readily reproduced by an unauthorized person. If an unauthorized person attempted to remove the bung 2, the war; 6 would be broken when the strip 1 is removed.
In case it should be desirable to use a paper instead of wax, the same may be easily arranged in the depressed portion 3, as clearly shown in Fig. 41-. The paper seal 8 shown in this figure is preferably held by a suitable adhesive to the bung 2 and if de sired, the nail or tack 7 could be placed in position.
In Fig. 5 will be seen another form of the invention in which the strip 4' is formed of thicker material. than the strip 4t, and is provided with a recessed or hollowed out portion 9 having an aperture 5 in a, similar manner to the way the aperture 5 is ar ranged in the preferred structure. A sealing member 10, either of waX, paper, or other material, may be applied in the recessed or hollowed out portion 9. By the arrangement shown in Fig. 5, the bung 2 need not be recessed as shown in the preferred structure.
In Figs. 6 and 7 another form of the invention is shown in which the strip 11 is secured to the package 1 by tacks or in any desired manner so as-to bear against the bung 2, while depressions 12 and .13 are formed on opposite sides of the bung. These depressions may receive seals of any desired kind.
Fig. 8 shows a slightly modified formfrom that shown in Figs. 6 and 7, wherein the metal. of strip 1 1 is formed thicker than strip 11 so that the seal-receiving openings may be formed in the body of the metal instead of forming a depression; this will obviate the necessity of forming depressions or notches in the package 1.
In Figs. 9 and 1.0 a round retaining plate 15 is disclosed, conforming with the depression 16 designed to be fitted into the recessed portion of the bung in asimilar manner tothe form shownin Figs. 1 to In Figs. 11 and 12 a slightly modified form of the invention is disclosed to that shown in Fig. 9, wherein the plate or strip 17 is formed round and the depression 18 is merely a hollowed out portion from the plate or strip so that no depression need be formed in the bung. The round plates or strips shown in Figs. 9 to 12 may be secured to the package by nails, tacks, or in any other desired way.
In the formation of the strip and seal embodying the present invention, it is not aimed to. provide means which cannot be removed by any one, but it is aimed to disclose to the purchaser the fact that the package has been opened by an unauthorized person, if such is the case. In this way the purchaser receiving the package will know whether or not the same is in the same condition as when it left the shipper, or whether it has been tampered with by the impression on the seal.
It will be noted that by the hollowed out portions or depressions in which the seal is placed, the same is protected against accidentalv abrasion or breaking in the ordinarily more or less rough handling during the shipping of the package.
Having thus described my invention I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1;. In a hung retainer and seal, a retaining strip fitting over the bung formed with a depression having an aperture therein, and an easily breakable sea-ling member fitting into said depression and extending through said aperture.
2. Ina retaining strip and seal of the class described, a single integral strip of retaining material arranged to press against a bun said strip of retaining material being formed with a: hollowed out portion having an aperture therein, an. easily breakable seal arranged in said hollowed out portion and extending through said aperture, and means engaging said seal for causing the destruction of the seal when said strip of retaining material is removed.
3. In a device of the character described, a retaining strip adapted to fit against abung and the package carrying the bung, said retaining strip being formed with a recessed portion near one sideof the bung, and an easily breakable sealing member arranged in said recessed portion.

In a device of the character described, a retaining strip adaptedto span a bung and to engage the package carrying the bung on opposite sides of the bung, said retaining strip bein g formed with a hollowed. out portion on opposite sides of the bung, each. of said: hollowed out portions being formed with. an aperture, and a sealing member arranged. in each. of said. hollowed out portiOns extending through said aperture and engaging said package whereby said bung cannot be removed without breaking one of said seals.
In a device of the character described, a strip. of retaining material arranged to span a bung and engage the package carrying the bung on opposite sides of the bung, said retaining strip being formed with a hollowed out portion on each side of the bung, each of said hollowed out portions being formed with an aperture, a seal formed of Wax arranged in said hollowed out portion and extending through said aperture so as to engage said package, and
10 means engaging said Wax in addition to said strip for causing the breaking of the Wax When the strip is removed.
