B'e it known that. I, LANSING ONonnooNi, a citizen of the United States, residing atv New York, in the county of NewYork, State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Looper-Oper ating- Mechanisms for Sewing-Machines, of
' which the following is a description, reference being had to the accompanylng draw- "ing and to the letters and figures of refertion,-Figure l is a sectional view of a por tion of a sewing; machine embodying my looper mechanism, said section being taken on a line parallel with the line of feed; Fig. 2 is a' bottom p-lan view of a sewing machine embodying my invention; Fig. 3- is a detail sectional view, showingthe looper in side elevation; Fig. 4 is a sectional view of the looper-supporting shaft; and Fig. 5 is a plan view of the loopcr-supporting shaft, with the sui'iporting' collar for the looper removed.
The bed plate 1 has rising' therefrom an overhanging arm 2, in which reci procates a needle bar 3, carrying'a, needle 4 at its lower end.
' The feedbar 5 is pivoted toy a feed rocker 6-mounted on a shaft 7, which receives a rocking movement through the :li-m8 from an eccentric on the main shaft, which is `mounted in the overhanging; arm. 'The feed bar 5 receives its up and down movement from a crank arm 9, mounted on a shaft 10,
which is oscillated by a yoke 11, which engagesan eccentric on the shaft 12. Said shaft 12 is continuously rotated, by means of a lbelt 13, from the main shaft in the overhanging arm. The crank arm 9 'carries a block 14, on its forward end, which is located in the fork of the feed bar 5. The feed bar 5 carries the usual feed dog, which is omitted .from the drawing' for the sake of clearncss.
The looper 15, as shown in the drawings,
-is of the thread-carrying type, and is mounted in a carrier 16', which isclainped to `the forward end of a sleeve 17, sho-wn in detail in Fig.4. The sleeve 17 is mounted upon the looper-sirpporting,r shaft 18. The loopersupporting shaft 18, as shown in Figs. 4 and 5, is reduced at its forward end, so that the sleeve 17 is of the same diameter as the outer end of the shaft 18. wear washer 19 is placed on the reduced portion of 'the shaft 18', between the end of the sleeve 17, and the body portion of the shaft 18. The washer 20 is also placed on the reduced end of the shaft 18, and secured thereto by a nnt 21. l
The shaft 18 is bored centrally as at 22 l (see Fig. 4). The bore 22 in the enlarged portion Aof the shaft 18 is filled witha suitable oil-receiving packing. A screw'23 isv threaded into the smaller end of the bore in the shaft 1.8, and a screw .24 closes the other end. rlhe shaft 18 is pro-vided in its outer surface with a spiral `egroove 25,- which extends throughont the length of said shaft. 'lhe shaft 18 is also provided with openings 26 which lea-d at intervals from the inner part or bore 22 to the spiral groove 25.
this form of construction., the oil which is contained in the central part of the shaft 18 is gradually fed through the openings 2G into the spiral groove in the/Outer surface of the shaft 18. Suitable openings 27, 27, are also provided at intervals through the sleeve 17, so that the oil may pass to the outer surface of said sleeve. I
The loopensupporting shaft 18 is mounted in suitable bearings 28, 29, and said' shaft is free not only to oscill'ate in said bearings, but. tol be moved longitudinally therein. The looper carrier 16 is clamped on the Outer 1 end of the sleeve 17, by means of a clamping 1, screw 30. A collar 31 is secured at the other ond of the sleeve 17, at a point intermediate the bearings Q8 and 29. Said sleeve 31 carries an outwardly extending arm 82. rI `he main shaft 12 entends through the bearing 33,. secu-red to the under side of the bed plate, and has mounted on its forward end a cran-k disk 34, carrying a ball socket bracket 35'. The link 36 is provided with a T. in combination with a looper support, having an oil-receiving recess located centrally thereof, openings lead-ing to the exua'ior o i' said support, a spiral groove formed on the outer surface oatl said support, and connecting said openings, a sleeve mounted on said support, and a looper secured to said sleeve.

A looper mechanism including in combination a rotating shaft, a looper support, a looper carried thereby`r means for moving said looper in a direction substantially at right angles to the axis of said shaft, and means for moving said looper in a direction parallel with a plane embracing the axis of said shaft, said last named means including a member carried at the outer end of said shaft, a link inclined to the axis of said shaft, and having a universal joint connection with said member at a point at one side ot' the axis of said shaft, and means for connecting the outer end of said link to said looper support at a point at one side of the axis of said shaft, whereby said link will be given a gyrat-ory and endwise movement., and thereby impart an oscillating movement to said looper.
