To all wit-0m t may concern:
Be it known that PHILLIP JACOB Damien, a citizen of the United States, and
a resident of Toledo, in the county of Lucas and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Platen-Roll-Turning Means for Type-ldriters; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the characters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to automatically operated typewriters, and has for its object the provision of means which is automatically operable at predetermined intervals to impart a rapid turning or sheet-feeding movement to the platen-roll of a typewriter, and is independent of the means customarily employed for turning the platen-roll to impart line spacing movements thereto.
The invention is fully described in the following specification, and while, in its broader aspect, it is capable of embodiment in numerous forms, a preferred embodiment thereof is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which,-

This application is a division of the application filed by me on August 29, 1911, Serial No. 646,661.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates a typewriter desk or other suitable part with which my invention may be associated, 2 the lowered top portion thereof, and 3 a typewriter of any suitable form which rests upon the part 2. The typewriter 3 is provided with the customary typewriter carriage 4, which operates over the top portion of the machine in the usual or any suitable manner, and carries the customary platen-roll of which 5 is the shaft.
6 designates the frame of a sheet-feeding mechanism which is attached to the typewriter carriage 4 for movements therewith.
To accomplish a rapid intermittent turning of the platen-roll, for which my present thereon coacting with one of the guides 10,
and upon a forward movement of the bar 9 from its normal position the pawl 8 coacts with the ratchet wheel 7 to impart a predetermined rotary movement thereto.
A rapid reciprocation of the push-bar 9 is effected by the rotation of a wiper-wheel 13, which is carried by a shaft 14 in position for its wiper iang'es 15 to coact with the rear end of the push-bar 9 to impart forward movements thereto when said bar stands in register with such flanges. The shaft 14 is mounted in a bearing bracket 1G, which is secured to one side of the desk or case 1. This wiper-wheel is axially shiftable on its shaft to cause a clutch surface 17 on one end thereof to be moved into engagement with a clutch lug 1S on a pulley or other rotatable member 19, which pulley is mounted on the shaft 14 and is continuously driven during the operation of the machinev from a motor 2O through the medium of a belt 21. A coiled compression spring 22 is interposed between the adjacent sides of the wheel 13 and pulley 19 to normally maintain the same in disengaged position. Vhen the wiper-wheel is in normal or disengaged position its rotation is stopped by the engagement of one of the flanges 15 thereof with a stop lug 23 on the bracket- 16, as best shown in Fig.
The means employed for automatically moving the wiper-wheel into clutch engagement with the rotating member 19 at predetermined intervals during an operation of the machine, comprises, in the present instance, a shift lever 24 which ispivoted to a bracket 25, projecting from the adjacent casing side, with its upper end in forked engagement with avperipherally grooved hub portion of said wheel and its lower end attached to the movable part 26 of a bellows 27, whereby a collapsing of said bellows will impart a pulley engaging movement to the wheel 13.

lt. will be understood that the bellows 27, which is shown in conventional form, has a part in cmnmunication through a pipe 2S with a suction means 2.9 ot' any suitable 'lform and a part in con'imunication through a tube 30 with a passage of a tracker board b1. rl`he term bellows as herein used means not only the bellows proper but also the internal or associated valve mechanism which normally closes communication between the suction means and the interior ot the collapsible portion oli' the bellows, and is also automatically operated to open such communication when the associated tracker passage is open to permit the air suction to collapse the collapsible bellows parts, as well understood in the art. ifi belt 38 is shown, in the present instance, as leading from the motor 2O to the suction means 2f) to operate the same.
Numerous forms of bellows 27 are on the market, and it will be sufficient for an understanding ol' the operation of the invention to describe one torni only thereof, which is shown in detail in Fig. 5. ln these bellows, 34 designates the body or stationary part and 35 the interior oi" the bellows proper. The body 34 is provided with a chamber 3G, which has communication through the passage 37 with the suction pipe 28 and has communication through a passage 3S with the interior 35 of the bellows. A diaphragm 39 is disposed in the chamber 36 and divides it into two compartments, one of which has communication with both passages 37 and 38, while the other has communication through a passage 40 with the tube 30 leading from the associated tracker board passage. A disk-valve 41 is disposed in the passage 3S, and has its stem projected into the chamber 3G and attached to the diaphragm llt/Then the valve is raised by the suction action thereon from within the chamber 3G it closes the communication between such chamber and the passage 38 and when lowered, due to atmospheric pressure in the passage 4() upon the diaphragm 39, it is lowered and opens the communication between the chamber 36 and passage 38 to the bellows and closes the opening 42 `from the passage 38 to the atmosphere. It is thus apparent that when the tracker passage is closed the suction action within the chamber 86 will move the valve 41 to close the communication between the suction means and the interior of the bellows and open the communication between the atmosphere and the bellows, and that upon an opening of the tracker passage the atmospheric pressure, which then rushes into the passage 40, acts upon the diaphragm 39 and effects a movement of the valve 41 to open communication between the suction means and the interior of the bellows so that a sudden collapsing oit the bellows is effected. A
small bleed-opening 43 is provided between the passage 40 and the suction chamber 36 so that any air remaining in the passage 40 atter the closing oit the associated tracker passage will be slowly drawn therefrom to relieve the pressure on the side olz the diaphragm opposed to the valve.
The operation of my invention is as tollows: Upon the feeding of a sheet into position to be engaged and Ylied by a rotation oil the platen-roll, which initial `feeding movement may be communicated to the sheet in any suitable manner, as by the mechanism described in my said former application Serial No. (346,661, a perforation in the control sheet 32 moves into register with the tracker-boaifl li'iassagc in communication with the bellows 2T and permits the suction means Q9 to act to eilect a collapsing ot the bellows and a consequent. movement olf the lever Q4 to shift the \vipei-wlieel 13 into engagement with the drive pulley 19. ll pon a rotation oit the wheel 13 its tins or lianges 15 successively 'strike the push-bar 9 and imiart rapid and successive sheet, feeding movements to the platen-roll tor the pm'pose ot quickly moving the sheet into initial writing position. lt will be understood that the length ot Yl'eeding of the sheet in this manuel' is gaged by the length oit the perforation in register with the associated. tracker board passage and that as soon as said perforation moves out of register with the tracker-board passage the spring will act to force the wheel 13 to normally disengaged position and move the lever 24 to open the bellows. This same action is repeated when the writing of the letter or other matter has been completed so as to etliect a rapid feeding-out movement ot the sheet preparatory to the Lfeeding o'lf another sheet to the platen-roll, or such operation may occur at any point in the printing of the sheet as it may be desired to leave a considerable space in the body of the printed matter.
lt is evident that a separate line spacing mechanism, for instance such as that dew scribed in my accompanying application Serial No. 641,560, tiled July 231, 1911, may be used in connection with the typewriter tor imparting the successive line spacing movements to the platen-roll and thatl my present inechanisi'n does not interfere with nor does it celiipnerate with the regular line spacing mechanism to impart rotation to the roll. lt also evident that the use ot a platen-roll turning mechanism oit this character in connection with an automatically operated typewriter materially enhances the speed ot' working thereof, as the .sheets are quickly ted to printing position and when the printing has been accomplished then quickly fed from engagement with the platen-roll, thus enhancing the practicabillSU ity and commercial value of apparatus of this class.
I wish it understood that my invention is not limited to any speciiic construction or arrangement of the parts except in so tar as such limitations are specified in the claims.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is*
l. The combination with the platen roll of a typewriter, ot a reciprocally movable member having pawl and ratchet connection with the platen roll, and mechanism having a pneumatically controlled rotatable part operable to impart reciprocal movements to said member.
2. The combination with the platen roll of a typewriter, of a reciprocally movable member having pawl and ratchet connection with the platen roll and yieldingly retained in one position of its movement, and mechanism having a rotatable part which is operable to impart reciprocal movements in o-ne direction to said member.
3. The combination with the platen roll of a typewriter, of pawl and ratchet means operable to impart intermittent rotation to the platen roll, a rotatable member for acting on said pawl to impart roll turning movements to said ratchet, driving means normally disengaged from said member and mechanism automatically operable to engage said member and driving means.
4. The combination with the platen roll of a typewriter, of pawl and ratchet means for imparting intermittent rotary movements to the platen roll, reciprocatory means for moving the pawl, a spring for moving said reciprocatory means in one direction, a rotary wiper member for imparting movements to said reciprocatory means in opposition to said spring, means for driving said wiper member, and mechanism pneumatically opera-ble to shift said member into driving engagement with said driving means.
5. The combination with the platen roll of a typewriter, of pawl and ratchet means for imparting intermittent rotary movements to said roll, a shiftable wiper wheel adapted when rotating to impart ratchet turning movements to the pawl, means for driving said wheel, and pneumatically controlled mechanism for moving the wheel into and out of driving engagement with said driving means at predetermined intervals.
6. The combination with the platen-roll of a typewriter, of a pawl and ratchet operable to turn said roll, a push-bar yieldingly movable in one direction and attached to said pawl for imparting ratchet turning movements thereto, a rotatable member operable to impart successive reciprocatory movements to said push-bar, and a motor for driving and pneumatic means for controlling said member.
