witnesses lnventor Attorneys UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
PHILIP J. I-IAAS, OF YORK, NEBRASKA.
FENCE-POST STAPLE.
To all whom it may cmwm Be it known that I, PHILIP J.HAAS, a citizen of the United States, residing at York, in the county of York and State of Nebraska, have invented a new and useful Fence-Post Staple, of which the following is a specification. v
This invention relates to inprovements in staples for concrete fence-posts.
It has for its object primarily to provide for readily and quickly applying the stringers or horizontal wires to the posts.
A further object is to guard against liability of casualties resulting froni lightningflashes.
A still further object is to carry out the aforesaid ends in a simple, efiective and eX- peditious manner.
The invention consists of certain instrumentalities and features substantally as hcreinafter fully disclosed and defined by the appended claim.
In the acconpanying drawing, illustrating the preferred embodiment of my invention Wherein it will be understood that various changes and inodifications may be made as to the detailed Construction and arrangement of the parts without departing from the spirit thereof, F igure l is a View of a fence post with the staple in use.
Fig. 2 is a horizontal section thereof. Fig.
3 is a detailed section of the same. Fig. l
is a dctached perspective View of the staple. In putting my invention into practice, I cmploy principally a staple 1, which is adapted for use by embedding it partially in the fence-post when in a plastic state, as during the molding operation, the post being designated as 2.
The staple is in a continuous piece or length of stout wire, the latter being formedinto a central edgewise-disposed loop 3 and duplicate oppositely extended loops l, l in parallel relation one above the other, each being of approximately U-shaped Outline, the bottom or curi 'ature of each U being presented outwardly or rather beyond the surface of the post and sufliciently spaced apart to receive between them, a wire stringer or longitudinal member of the felice; this ar- 'angement is duplicated for each longtudinal or fence Wire.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed April 26, 1912.
Patented Aug. 5,1913. Serial No. 693,&80.
A suitable fastening, as a headed pin or key 7, or the like, is inserted into the parallel duplicate loops of the staple, transversely with respect to the fence-wire and serves to secure the latterefi'ectively in place therein.
The inner embedded ends of the staple forming wire are extended laterally into right-angled terminals or portions 5, pro- Viding not only for additionally anchoring or securing the staple in the post, but also allowing the bringing or clisposingthe staple in contact with the metal-reinforce or rods 6, commonly incorporated in this type of fence-post and which are usually located or disposed in the corners of the post, for obvious reasons.
It is apparent that this arrangement whereby a metallic conductor is provided between the fence-wire and the metal-reinforce in the form of the wires in the post, having ground-connection, would allow of the grounding of electrical currents resulting from lightning fiashes during rainstorms, the moisture or water absorbed by the earth also being promotive, as well understood, of that end, thus guarding against the liability of the destruction of the posts, or buildings, and fatalites to cattle or animals, under the indicated conditions, all of which are appreciated.
lVhat is claimed is A staple, having duplicate loops in parallel relation and a Vertical loop directly be` hind the first mentionecl loops with the plane thereof perpendicular to the first mentioned loops, the terminals of the staple being extended laterally therefrom in opposite directions and in a line intermediate of the length of the looped portions, each terminal being in the same horizontal plane as its carrying loop.
ln testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto afiixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
