Description

- F. L. ALLEN. EYEGLASSES. APPLICATION FILED MAY 18, 1912.

UNITED STATES PATENT err-ion.
\ FREDERICK I. ALLEN, 0F BOISE, IDAHO.
EYEGLASSES.
Specification of Letters I Paten t. Pate 1133a,)" uly 29, 1913.
Application filed May 18, 1912. Serial No. 698,239.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERICK L. ALLEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Boise, in the county of Ada and State of Idaho, have invented new and useful Improvements in Eyeglasses, of whichthe following is a specification.
This invention relates to eye-glasses, the object in view being to provide an eflicient and reliable connection between the nose piece or frame and the lenses, whereby the lenses may be securely connected to the frame, and all lost motion thereof prevented, the fastening device serving by reason of its construction to take up the slight wear which is caused by constant use of the glasses, and at the same time enabling the lenses to be readily detachedfrom the .frame or nose piece when required.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described, illust ated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claimshereunto appended.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a rear'ele ration of a pair of eye-glasses, embodying the present invention. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section taken through the point of connection between one of the lenses and the nose piece or frame. Fig. 4 is a cross section taken atright angles to Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a detail perspective View of the 'joint between a lens and the nose piece.
Referring to the drawings, 1 designates a nose piece or frame, the opposite extremities of which are bifurcated or forked, as shown at 2. To each of the branches of the fork 2, there is coimectcd rigidly a post or pin 3. These two posts extend. in parallel relation to each other through holes 4 in the adjacent margin of the lens 5, and each of said posts or-pins is provided with a longitudinal slot 6.
7 designates a lock or fastener, consisting of a piece of spring wire of suitable length, bent into the form of a loop, as shown, so that the central portion of the loop may pass over and embrace the nose piece just back of the fork above described.
The parallel portions of the loop are bent' intermediate the bight to extend around the edge of the lens and form spring arms 8, the extremities of which are bent outwardly in opposite directions to scription and by reference to the drawings,
that the spring arms of the fastener serve to force the wedge-shaped terminals thereof into the slots of the posts or pins, and at the same time they bear against the lens, thereby pushing the lens firmly against the branches or arms of the fork. This prevents any possibility of the fastener or the lens working loose, keeps the lens in close contact with the fork, and takes up any wear which may be caused by constant use of the glasses.
What is claimed is:
l. A nose piece for eye-glasses having a bifurcated extremity, parallel posts extending therefrom and provided with longitudinal slots,- and a lock in the form of a loop of wire embracing the nose piece and having oppositely projecting extremities entering the slots in the posts.
2. A nose piece for eye-glasses having a bifurcated extremity, parallel posts extending therefrom and provided with longitudinal slots, and a lock in the form of a loop of spring wire embracing the nose piece and having oppositely projecting extremities cutering the slots in the posts.
3. A nose piece for eye-glasses having a bifurcated extremity, parallel posts extending therefrom and provided with'longitudinal slots, and a lock in the form of a loop, I
embodying spring arms, the said loop cinhi acing the .nose piece and having oppositely projecting extremities entering the slots in the posts.
4. A nose piece for eye-glasses having a bifurcated extremity, parallel posts extending therefrom and provided with longitudinal slots, and a lock in the form of a loop of spring wire, embracing the nose piece and having oppositely projecting and wedgeshaped extremities entering the slots in the posts.
In testimony whereof I aliix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
FREDERICK L. ALLEN.
