To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN N. MOORE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Great Falls, in the County of Cascade and State of Montana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wire-Fastening Devices, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to wire fastening means and more particularly to that type of fastening means employed in securing a wire or cable to a support, such as concrete or iron, incapable ot receiving a pointed or driven tastening member, as for instance a staple.
The invention comprises a wire fastening member adapted to receive a wire and then be moved to bring the latter under tension before mounting the member on the support, whereby the tension of the wire aids in retaining the member to the support.
The invention further comprises a stay or wire fastening member provided with peripheral means whereby suitable means may be attached to the stay 'for fastenng the latter to the support.
For a full understanding of the present invention, reference is to be had to the following description and to the accompanyino' drawings, in which- `igure 1 is a perspective View of a post llustrating the present invention applied thereto in an operative position. Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view thereof. Fig. 3 is a fragmentary front elevation of the fastening device applied to the post or support. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the device itself,
Throughout the following detail description and on the several figures of the drawings, similar parts are referred to by like reference characters.
As illustrated in the drawings, the present invention is applied to a post for fastening fence wires thereto, although the device may be applied to other supports with results as efiicient as when applied to a fence post.
The support 1 is provided with an elongated recess 2 on one face thereof, and passing from the base of the recess 2 through the post, is an opening 3, said opening' and recess being formed therein in any suitable manner but preferably being formed therein when the post or support is molded. The wire fastening means 4 comprises a fiat block having its outer edge curved, as at 5, to do away with sharp edges or corners, and is provided with the peripheral groove C adapted to receive a wire or other suitable means 7 for securing or attaching the wire fastening member 4 in the recess 2. The member 4 is provided with a wire receiving slot 8, preferably located centrally of its sides, said slot 8 being formed in the edge of the member 4 which is inserted in the recess 2. It will thus be seen that the slot 8 is closed by the support l when the member 4 is inserted in the recess 2. The member 4 is provided on each side thereof with the wire receiving grooves 9 communicating with the slot 8 at the base thereof, said grooves 9 extending completely across the body 4. The member 4 may be constructed and used without the grooves 9 in an equally efficient manner. In mounting the member 4 on the support, the former is held in the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 3, in which position the fence wire maybe easily slipped into the slot 8 and then the member is rotated to the full line position in said figure and inserted in the recess 2 formed in the support which, in the present instanee, is arranged longitudinally with respect to the wire, although various dispositions may be made if desired.
From the foregoing, it will be noted that the wire A is placed under tension and when the member 4 is inserted in the recess 2, such tension of the wire will tend to rotate the member and cause a frict-ional engagement of the sides of the member 4 with the walls of the recess 2. Such frictonal engagement will, in some cases, be sufficient to retain the device on the support, but to prevent any unauthorized dislodgment of the device, the wire 7 is seated in the peripheral groove 6 and the terminals pass through the opening 3, after which said terminals are bent to engage the post, as is most clearly shown in Fig. 2. By having the grooves 9 extending across the sides of the member 4, the latter may be rotated in either direction to cause the tence wire to seat in the grooves 9 on either side of the slot 8.
The member 4 may be constructed of any suitable material such as plastic or metal and may be easily and cheaply constructed, thereby making the device practical.
