'an anesthetizing apparatus; and it is designed to serve two useful'purposes, viz., first, to heat the anesthetizing gas, such as nitrous oxid, or air, or some admixture of the two, as it flows, under pressure, to the face mask from tanks in which said gas is stored; and'seoond, to enable the operator to produce and administer ether vapor whenever desired and in a manner thoroughly under control.
The invent-ion is constructed so that it may be easily and quickly connected with the conduit leading from the gas and air tanks, on the one hand, and with the flexible tube leading to the face mask, on the other hand.
In the drawing, Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of a device embodying the invention. Fig. 2 is a view partly in central section in a plane at rightangles to the section on which Fig. 1 is taken. Fig. 3' is a horizontal sectio if the plane of line AA on Fig. 2.
The body of the device includes the following parts which are preferably made integral-with one another, viz., the inlet tube 3 which is adapted for connection with ,the supply of gas and air, the outlet tube 4 adapted for the attachment thereto of the gas delivery tube which has the face mask on its free end; and the centrally placed ether vaporizing cup 5. This cup has no connection with the inlet tube 3, but does communicate with the outlet tube 4 through the'hole or port 6 in the wall of said cup. On this body is a downwardly extendedcylindrical flange 7 concentrically arranged around the ether cup, which flange is internally threaded. The water receptacle 8 is externally threaded at its upper end and screws into this flange, whereby it is suspended from the body. A pipe 14 which is fixed to the inlet tube 3 passes through the u per header and is fixed to thelo'wei' hea er. Another pipe 16 is confiected with the upper header and to the outlet tube. The water receptacle has near its upper end a capped opening 15 through which the water may be introduced, and it has at its lower end a pet cock 17 through which the water may be withdrawn.-
The ether vaporizing cup 5 at its lower end extends downward far enough to project into the water in the waterreceptacle 8. Fixed to the upper end of the ether vaporizing cup is the neck 20 of the ether holder 21. This holder has in its bottom a nozzle 22 which is provided with a needle valve 23 to control the size of the delivery opening therethrough; and the neck has a window 24 through which the operator may observe the rapidity with which the ether drops fall from said nozzle.
When this device is being used to heat nitrous oxid gas or air or any mixture thereof, said gas will flow into the inlet tube 3, thence through tube 14 into the lower header 13, thence through the numerous vertical tubes 11 into the upper header, andthence through pipe 16 into the outlet tube 4:. The water in the receptacle will bekept at the desired temperatureby means of the electric heating coil 10, and therefore this gas will be properly heated as it travels the path above pointed out.
If, at any time, it is thought necessary or desirable to administer ether to a patient, the valve 23 is opened sufiiciently, and the ether allowed to flow, drop by drop from the nozzle 22. These drops will fall upon the bottom of the ether vaporizing cup 5, which, because it is immersed in the warm water will be at such a temperature that this ether will immediately flashinto vapor, and this vapor will flow into the outlet tube l through the port 6, and while in this tube will become mixed with the air which should be allowed to, flow into the outlet tube 4, passing through the gas heater before described.
Having described my invention, I claim:
1. The combinationof a body which includes as integral parts an inlet .tube, an outlet tube, an intermediately placed cup which is in communication with the outlet tube only and which projects below said tubes, and a depending flange around said cup, with a water receptacle suspended from said flange, means for heating water in said receptacle, means for delivering ether drop by drop into said cup, and a conduit which extends down into said water receptacle and is connected at its ends respectively with the inlet tube nd the outlet tube.
2. In an attachment for anesthetizing apparatus, the combination of a body member having as integral parts an inlet tube, an outlet tube and an intermediately placed ether cup which extends below said tubes and is in communication with the outlet tube only, a hot water receptacle suspended from said body around said ether cup, means for heating water therein, a conduit which is located in the water receptacle and is connected at its ends with the inlet and outlet tubes respectively, and an ether dropper supported by said body member and arranged to deliver ether drop by drop onto the bottom of said ether cup.
