DRESS-SUIT CASE AND LIKE REUEPTAGLE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed February 23, 1811.
Patented July 22, 1913.
Serial No. 610,132.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANZ VVALDscnMrr'r, J12, a citizen of the United States, and a resi: dent of Rockaway Beach, in the county of Queens and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Dress-Suit Gases and Like Receptacles, of which the following is a speci fication.
The invention relates to improvements in dress-suit cases and like receptacles, and it consists in the novel means hereinafter described and claimed for protecting and strengthening the corners of the case and preferably both the corners and the angular edges thereof extending between said corners.
I present my invention herein as applied to dress-suit cases, and in carrying out the invention I preferably provide an integral strengthening and protecting piece of special construction for application to each transverse angular edge of the case and adapted to cover both said edge and the corners at the ends thereof.
One of the more important features of the invent-ion resides in the novel corner protecting pieces, which are each integral and neatly folded upon and closely fit the corner of the case, to which said piece is firmly secured.
The invention will be fully understood from the detailed description hereinafter presented, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a top view of a dress-suit case equipped with edge and corner protecting and strengthening pieces embodying my invention; Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal section through a portion of the same on the dotted line 2-2 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is an elevation of the blank of leather or other suit able material, which, when properly folded upon the end edge of a dress-suit case, serves to strengthen and protect said edge and the corners at the ends thereof; Fig. t is a detached perspective view of the blank shown in Fig. 3, when folded for application to the edge and corners of the dresssuit case preparatory to being riveted or otherwise secured thereto, and Fig. 5 is a detached perspective view of one end portion of the protecting piece, showing a corner-piece viewed from the exterior thereof.
In the drawings 10 designates a dress-suit case having at its end edges protecting and strengthening pieces or strips 11 which in the preferred construction extend from corner to corner of said edges and at their ends afford special corner protectors for the case. The pieces ll are each formed from a strip or blank 9, of leather or other suitable material, of the outline presented in Fig. 3 and of sufficient width to be folded longitudinally upon the end edge of a suit-case and form flanges l2, 18 to respectively lap upon and be riveted to the horizontal and vertical portions of the case contiguous to said edge, as shown in Figs. 1 and L, the blank when thus folded being of general angle-formation in c1.'osssection as illustrated in Il ig. 4i. Preferably the edge of the flange 12 will be given an ornamental outline, as shtnvn, to lend attractiveness to the case. The formation of the ends of the blank 9 of special character in affording neat, suitable and effective corner-pieces for the corners of the case, and each end of said blank is formed with a member 14: which extends beyond that part of the blank from which the flange 13 is created and is separated therefrom by a main incision l5 and two incisions 16 diverging from the inner end thereof and forming between them an intermediate interior substantially triangular section 17, which in the final result performs an important function.
In the application of the blank 9 to the edge of the end of the case, said blank will first be folded thereon to create the flanges 12, 13, leaving the members l t projecting in line with the flange 12 beyond said end, and thereupon the members 14- will on the lines of the incisions 15 be folded downwardly if at the top or upwardly if at the bottom of the case, against the front and rear faces of the same, creating which for convenience of description I may designate as end flanges 18, and leaving the free end portions 19 of the members let projecting longitudinally beyond the vertical ends of the case. The portions 19 are then folded at right angles against the flanges 13 and riveted or otherwise secured, the triangular sections 17 being first folded inwardly (Figs. land 5) to afford a finish to the extreme corners of the corner-pieces and avoid gaps and raw edges at said corners, thereby not only improving the appearance of the corner-pieces but rendering them more durable and lasting.
l have found that there is considerable advantage in providing a continuous integral edge strip having the corner-piece formations hereinbefore described at its ends, so that the entire edge of a case as well as the corners at the ends thereof may be protected, as shown, but I do not desire to confine the invention in every instance to the continuous integral strip since very advantageous results may be secured even should said strip not be continuous so long as the corner formations are present to protect the corners of the case.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is:
1. A dress-suit case having corner protectors secured thereto each comprising a piece of bendable material forming right-angular flanges 12, 13 applied against adjacent hori Zontal and vertical surfaces of the case and having an end member 14 integral with, the end of one of said flanges and separated by an incision (15) and diverging incisions (16) at the inner end thereof, creating between them a triangular section (17), from the other of said flanges, said member 14: being folded at a right angle with relation to the flange with which it is joined and having an end portion (19) folded at a right angle to it against the outer fiat face of and secured to the other of said flanges, said section (17) being folded inwardly to create a proper finish for the extreme corner of the corner-piece; substantially as set forth.
2. A dress-suit case having at its ends and corners integral continuous edge and corner protectors secured thereto each comprising a piece of bendable material forming rightangular flanges (12), (13) applied against adjacent horizontal and vertical surfaces of the case and having at each end an end member (14) integral with the end of one of said flanges and separated by an incision (15) and diverging incisions (16) at the inner end thereof, creating between them a triangular section (17), from the other of said flanges, said member (1 1) being folded at a right angle with relation to the flange with which it is oined and having an end portion (19) folded at a right angle to it against the outer flat face of and secured to the other of said flanges, said section (17) being folded inwardly to create a proper finish for the extreme corner of the corner-piece; substan tially as set forth.
Signed at New York city, in the county of New York and State of New York, this 21st day of February A. D. 1911.
