HUNG-CLOSURE FOR BARRELS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed August 8, 1911. Serial No. 643,002.
To all whom it may concern lie it known that l, Gnonon Fi'rucrnn, a subject of the Emperor of Germany, and residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Bung-Closures it'or Barrels, of which the following is a complete specification.
The main objects of this invention are to provide a hung closure for barrels by means of which a. draw-oil pipe can be quickly attached to or detached from the barrel; to provide a hung closure for barrels which is capable of being quickly opened or closed when it is desired to insert or remove the pipe; to provide a hung closure for barrels which will etlectually prevent the escape of gas from the barrel; and to provide a cheap, simple and durable construction which is easy of operation and not liable to get out of repair.
A specific embodiment of the invention illustrated in, the accompanying drawings, in which:

In the construction shown, the casing 1 is cylindrical in shape and is provided with external screw threads 2 adapted to be be screwed into the bung hole of the barrel. The lower end of the casing is slightly reduced in external diameter and having threaded engagement thereon is the bottom cap 3. Said cap is provided in its bottom, near one side thereof, with a pipe aperture l; surroiuuling which, on the inner side of the cap, is a raised seat 5, and. at one side of said seat is a raised portion 6 on a level with the seat. Hotatively mounted on said seat 5 and raised portion (3 is a circular closure plate 7 which. is of av diameter to fit closely to the walls of the casing, and is provided with an aperture 8 of the same size as the aperture 4t and positioned near to one side of the plate, or eccentric with the plate so that when the plate is in one position the aperture 8 will rc :ter with the aperture 4.
The casing is provided with a circular partition 9 which provides a chamber 10 at one side of the casing in axial alincmcnt with the aperture 4 in the bottom of the cap Said partition extends downwardly in the casing to near the bottom cap and a web or talse bottom 11 extends from the bottom of the partition outwardly from the chamber 10 to the walls of the casing.
The chamber 10 is cylindrical and is provided. with an annular rib or ledge 12, and an operating arm .13 for the closure plate 7 lies on said plate and has at one end an annular boss 1-1 which projects up into the chamber and bears on the under side of the flange. The boss l l has an angular aperture 15 thereth rough in axial alinement with the aperture at, and in the opposite end of the arm is a slot 16 adapted to receive a pin 17 on the plate 7, and near one side thereof.
Extending into the chamber 10 is the gas connection 18 which comprises a, sleeve 19 having an angular lower end 20 adapted. to lit into the aperture 15 to swing the arm 18. The sleeve is provided with a tlange 21 between which and the i'langc 12 is a gasket 22 adapted to close the passage between the sleeve and the easing and above said tlange 21 are lugs 22) adapted to enter notches 24. in the opposite sides of the chamber 10 to a point beneath inclined ledges on the walls of the chamber, andv when the sleeve is rotated to move the lugs beneath said ledges the flange 21 is forced down lightly onto the gasket.
Opening into the side of the sleeve 19 is a tubular arm 26 tltlitpttld to have a rubber hose leading from a source of gas supply attached thereto. The draw-otFf pipe 27 is adapted to extend down through the sleeve and through the plate 7 into the barrel when the aperture 8 is in register with the aperture 4:, and is of less diameter than said sleeve and apertures so that a passage for the gas is afforded about the same to the barrel. On the upper end of the sleeve 19 is a suitable gland 28 adapted to close the opening in the sleeve about the pipe.
The operation of the construction shown is as follows: The casing 1 is secured in the bung hole of the barrel with the closure plate 7 turned in a position to bring its aperture 8 out of register with the aperture 4 in the bottom, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2. The sleeve 19 is then inserted into the chamber 10 with its end 20 extending into the aperture 15 of the boss 14. hen the sleeve 19 is rotated to move the lugs 23 beneath the ledge-s 25 the outer end of the arm 13 is swung to the right in Fig. 2, thereby causing the plate 7 to revolve and bring the aperture 8 into register with apertures 4 and 16, in which position the pipe 27 may be forced into the barrel. The gland 28 is then tightened about the pipe and the gas can enter the barrel through the gas fitting 18 and force the contents of the barrel out through the pipe 27. lVhen it is desired to disconnect the pipe from the barrel its lower end is withdrawn into the top of the sleeve 19 and when the sleeve is rotated to release it from the casing, the plate 7 is turned back to close the aperture 4.
While but one specific embodiment of the invention has been herein shown and described it will be understood that many details of the construction shown may be varied or omitted without departing from the scope of the claims.
I claim:
1. A bung closure for barrels, comprising a casing having an eccentrically disposed chamber therein and an aperture in its bottom in axial alinement with the chamber, a rotative Jlate in the chamber having an aperture atapted to be brought into register with the aperture in the bottom of the casing, an arm pivotally connected with said plate, and a sleeve adapted to extend into the chamber and connect with said arm above the rotative plate and when rotated to bring the aperture in the plate into and out of register with the aperture in the bottom.
2. A bung closure for barrels, comprising a casing having an aperture in the bottom thereof near one side of the casing, a partition in the casing providing a chamber in axial alinement with said aperture, a rotative plate in the bottom of the casing having an aperture therein adapted to register with the aperture in the bottom of the casing, an arm pivotally connected with said plate and having an aperture in axial alinement with the aperture in the casing, a sleeve rotatively mounted in the chamber and connected in the aperture in said arm above the rotative plate and adapted when rotated to rotate the plate and move its aperture into and out of register with the aperture in the bottom, and coacting means on the sleeve and chamber adapted to lock the sleeve in the chamber when said apertures are in register.
A bung closure for barrels, comprising a casing having a cylindrical chamber therein at one side of its center, a bottom on the casing having an aperture beneath the chamber, a plate rotatively mount-ed on the bottom and having an aperture therethrough adapted to be brought into register with the aperture in the bottom, an arm having an apertured boss at one end rotatively mounted in the bottom of the chamher and pivotally connected at its other end with said plate, a rotative sleeve adapted to extend into the chamber and connect in said boss above the rotative plate, interlocking means on the sleeve and chamber, and means adapted to secure a pipe in said sleeve.

A bung closure for barrels, comprising a casing, a curved partition providing a chamber at one side of the casing and extending to near the bottom of the casing, a false bottom connecting the bottom of the partition with the walls of the casing, a bottom secured on the casing and having an aperture beneath said chamber, a rotative plate mounted on said bottom and having an aperture t-herethrough adapted to be brought into register with the aperture in the bottom, an arm having an apertured boss on one end journaled in the bottom of the chamber and having its outer end projecting beneath said ledge and pivotally connected with the plate at one side thereof, a sleeve projecting into the chamber and non-rotatively secured in said boss above the rotative plate, there being means on the sleeve and chamber adapted, when the sleeve is rotated in a direction to bring the plate aperture into register with the bottom aperture, to lock the sleeve in the chamber, and a gland on the outer end of said sleeve adapted to form a tight joint about a pipe passing through the closure.
5. A bung closure for barrels, comprising a casing, means providing a chamber at one side of the casing, a bottom on the easing having an aperture in register with the chamber, a rotative closure in the casing having an off-centered aperture adapted to register with the aperture in the bottom when the closure is in one position, a pipe sleeve rotatively mounted in the chamber above said closure, and means connecting said sleeve and closure adapted when the sleeve is rotated to bring the aperture in the closure into and out of register with the aperture in the bottom.
6. A bung closure consisting of a casing having an eccentric opening and adapted to be secured in a barrel opening, a closure plate in said casing having an eccentric opening registrable with the casing openscribed my name in the presence of two Witing and a fluid conduit sleeve disposed 1n nesses.
