To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that T, SAMUEL A. STEWART, a citizen of the United States, residing at liongton, in the county of Elk and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and use :lul Improvements in Plows, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in tongueless plows, and has for its object to provide a device in the nature of an attachment, whereby the draft animals will guide the plow during its operation.
The further object of the invention is to so construct a clevis that the same will operate the caster wheel to assist in guiding the plow.
With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction and novel combination of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the claims hereto appended; it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion, size and minor details of construction within the scope oi. the claims, may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a side elevation of the device. .l ig. 2 is a top plan view of the device, showing the same applied to a beamed tongueless plow. Fig. 8 is a detail sectional view of the clevis.
Referring to the drawing, the numeral 1 designates the plow beam formed from metal, to which the clevis 2 is pivotally connected.
The clevis 2 consists of a perforated bar 3 having an arm 4 which extends at right angles. Formed in the outer end of said bar is a perforation 5, the purpose of which will appear later. Passing through the inner end or" the bar 3 is a pin 8, by which the clevis is pivotally connected to the beam. To permit attachment of the clevis to beams of different sizes a jaw l is provided, one end of which is formed with a slot 5 for slidably engaging the bar 3, while the other end is provided with a perforation 2 for similarly engaging the pin 3. To hold the jaw l in an adjusted position, a bolt 1 is passed through a perforation formed therein which registers with any one of the perforations of the bar 3.
A pair of blocks 6 and 7 are provided and are adapted to be clamped upon the beam 1 by bolts 8, the clamping block 6 having secured thereto and extending outwardly a bracket 9, said bracket being for the purpose of pivotally supporting a lever 10, the opposite ends of which being pro vided with perforations 11 and 1:2? The lever 10 is curved at its inner end to prevent a dead center.
It is obvious that the bracket 9 may be secured on the block 7 so that the lever 10 will be supported upon either side of the beam 1, and further that the clevis be so tormedthat the arm l may be extended tl'rom either side of the beam, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2', thus permitting the device to be applied to either side oi. the beam, as the occasion, may require.
It will be noted that the lever 10 is piv otally mounted nearer the inner end thereof, the rear end of the link 13 being pivotally engaged in the perforation 11 ct said lever, while the front end of the link is similarly connected in the perforation of the arm 4.
Suitably secured to the curved end of the beam 1 1s a caster wheel 15, the pintlo 16 of which is rigidly connected to the inner end of the arm 17, said arm having a por toration 18 formed in its outer end, and in which is pivotally connected one end of a rod 19. The other end of said rod is si1ni-- larly connected in the perforation 12 of the lever 10.
From this construction it will be seen that when the draft strain upon the clevis is directed to the right, the caster wheel 15 will be swung to assist in guiding the plow in the same direct-ion, the directionot travel of the caster wheel being reversed upon the draft strain being directed to the left.
What is claimed is The combination with a wheel plow, of a beam supported thereby, a clevis pivotally connected to the outer end of the beam, an arm connected to the clevis and arranged at right angles thereto, blocks clamped upon the beam and adapted to be moved longitudinally thereof for adjustment, a bracket carried by one of the blocks, a lever pivotally connected to the bracket, a link having its front end pivotally connected to the arm and its rear ends similarly connect ed to the lever near the outer end thereof, a pint-1e secured to the rear end of the beam,
