Description

OLGA BERGHORN, OF JERSEY CITY, NEW JERSEY.
CIGARETTE-BOX.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 22, l.
Application tiled ovember 1, 1912. Seri-a1 tto. 728,982.
citizen of the United States, and a resident o1" Jersey City Heights, Jersey City, in the rounty of Hinlson and State of New Jersey,
have invented certain new and useful lmprovements in Cigarettelloxes, of which the following is a specification.
he object of this invention is to combine a ffzu'dboard cigarette box with match-carryingrr provisions in such manner to produce a unitary package of desirable appearance, convenient to carry` having` an advantageous mode of operation, and lending-itself well to advertising purposes.
Additionally, it is the ain. of the invention to produce an article which can be man' u'faftrrcd economically.
'l`o these ends the invention consists in the device compri 'ng parts constructed and combined substantially as hereinafter set forth, reference being had to an illustrative v and pieter-red embodiment shown in the aceoinpanying drawings, wherein i Figure l is a perspective view of the box with the cover closed and the t'alse lid in an erect position; Fig. Q is a sectional side eleation ot the box in the same condition; and Fig. 5l is a plan view, the false lid being` turned bach' to horizontal position.
The box proper is of the type consist-ing ot a body 10 to hold the cigarettes and a cover il hinged to the body at 14. A lalse lid l2 is hinged to the cover and conforms to the top thereof, being formed of a rectangular piece ot cardboard, preferably of about the same weight las the stockffrom which the body and cover are made.' The upper side of this lid will usually be decorated in exactly the saine manner as any particular cigarette manufacturer is in the habit ot decorating the tops of' his boxes, so that the box with the lid lying flat on the cover Will present the accustomed appearance, with j ust sufficient suggestion of novelty to arouse interest. Ot course, however, the matter printed, pasted or lithographed on top of the lid may be of any kind desired.
The lid 1Q is hinged to the upper back edge of the cover 11 at 15, by a hinge con-- nection separate from the cover and lid and of much less stiff material, so that the lid lies flat on the cover Without any fastening means, thus avoiding an item of cost in manufacture and making thetpackage as conven- This completes the description ot Inv dev ient as possible to use, since the lid is merely flipped up and down to'open and close thc match coinl'artnient. Preferably the hinge connection is formed by a paper folder lo which also contains the'matches i7 and the abrasive or ignitine; material 1S. ,ne 19' of this Vfolder is pasted to and covers the top ot' the cover ll and the other leaf in like manner is pasted to and covers the underside of the lid finish is secured and the leaves of the, folder atlord convenient surfacesuon which to print and display advertising matter. i
It will be observed that-the hinge 15 ot the false lid -12 is parallel to and adjacent the hinge 14 of the cover, so that the lid opens away from the uscr when 4held in the hand and consequently any advertising matter displayed on the folder on the under side of the lid and on top of the cover'is directly presented to'view` Moreover, this relation ot' the hinges is of advantage 'with respect. to the mode of use of the pack fe. Both the/cover and thelid open in the'same direction, and by convenient motions. The cover is first raised and a cigarette extracted; the cover is closed and the lid thrown nach with the finger; a match is removed and ig nitcd on the material 18; and then the' lid is closed down on the cover again. L matches 1 7 are preferably of the pa strip kind and are retained at their lower or united ends beneath the strip of abrasive material 18, which extends across the iront of thetop of the cover ll and is pasted otherwise secured at its ends to the lea;c t The matches may be retained mere1 friction beneath this strip or they may be additionally secured in place. The abr# strip entirely concealed beneath the lit and its mode of operation7 and While I h( described this preferred embodiment W part1cular1ty 1t will be understood that changes may be made in the device without.
