lie it kno vn that I, Fnnonicx M. NEU- MANN, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Milwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of VvIisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Brackets; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.

My invention consists in what is herein particularlyset forth with refe-rence to the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the claims of this specification, its object being to provide simple, economical and eilicient knockdown preferably all metal shelfbrackets either singly or in pairs connected by a jointed brace of similar material pivoted thereto, a pair of thebrackets and their jointed brace constituting a shelf-hanger for suspension against a single wall or against intersecting walls to straddle a corner of the same or to be within such corner, and by means of said brac-e, the paired brackets may be disposed side by side to serve as a single hanger for two shelves one above another.

Figure 1 of the drawings illustrates a front elevation of a pair of knockdown preferably all metal brackets in accordance with my invention coupled by a jointed brace having its members in. pivotal connection with the brackets; Figs. 2 and 3, side elevations respectively of the two forms of bracket illustrated in the first described figure, said brackets being partly broken away and the joint-members therewith in crosssection as indicated by lines 2HE and 3 3 in Fig. 1; Fig. et, a horizontal sectional view illustrating the paired brackets and jointed brace therewith constituting a shelfhanger straddling the corner of two intersecting walls; Fig. 5, a similar view illustrating th-e hanger within the corner aforesaid; Fig. 6, a horizontal section indicated by line 6 6 in Fig. 2; Fig. 7, a side elevation of another form of single bracketin accordance with my invention, and Fig. 8, a horizontal sectional view indicated by line 8 8 in Fig. 7.

Referring by numerals to the drawings, 9 indicates the suspending strip of each of a pair of my knockdown shelf-brackets, and in pivotal connection with each of said strips is a member 10 of a hinge-jointed brace, the hinge-joint being at the inner meeting ends of the brace-members.

The upper end of each bracket-strip 9 is shown fashioned to form a hook for engagement with picture-molding upon a wall, but the strip may be suspended upon a suitably positioned nail, screw or hook, in which case an aperture will be provided in said strip as shown at 11 in Fig. 1.

In hinge-joint connection with the lower end of each strip 9 is one end of a bracestrip 12, and in like connection with the other end of the brace-strip is an end of a shelf-supporting strip 13, the other end of the latter strip being for connection with said strip 9 either directly or indirectly. As shown in Fig. (3, the shelf-supporting strip 13 of a bracket may be cut away at its end farthest from the hinge-joint thereof with the strip 12 to form a tang lll that extends through a slot in the strip 9 or in a reinforcing offset strip fastened thereto as shown in Figs. 1, 2 and G, a key 16 being engaged with the tang back of said strip 9 or 15 to hold said strip 12 in working position, a shelf being indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 1.

The strip 15 compensates for strain that would otherwise tend to effect a buckling of the strip 9, and the jointed brace permits of the paired bracket shelf-hanger straddling a corner of intersecting walls or being posi.- tioned within such a corner, as shown by Figs. -1- and 5. The jointed brace also permits of one of the paired brackets being swung down along side of the companion bracket to therewith serve as a single hanger for a pair of shelves.

In Fig. 7 it is shown that the suspending strip 9 of each bracket may be twisted to be partly edgewisc in front elevation for engagement with a matching angular recess 17 in the shelf-supporting strip 13, this recess being offset from a clearance slot 18 of the same strip, as is clearly shown in Fig. 8. The offsetting of the recess 17 in the strip '13 results in the formation of a tongue 19 of said strip that engages with a rear notch 20 provided in the strip 9 immediately above the lower twist of the same, and due to the slotting of said strip 12 a prong 21 of the same results. This pro-ng may be bent in against the strip 9 and tongue 19 of the strip 13 to thereby fasten the two strips together.

A shelf support 22 may be pivotally connected to either or both of the ointed bracestrips 10, such a support being particularly desirable when the paired bracket shelfhanger is employed as shown in Fig. 5. In some instances it may be desirable to employ an intermedia-te hanger 23 in pivotal connection with a member l0 of the hingejointed brace to prevent sagging.

I claim:

1. A knockdown bracket comprising a partly twisted suspending strip having a rear edge notch above a twist thereof, a brace-strip hinged at one end to t-he lower end of the suspending strip, and al shelfsupporting strip that is hinged to the other end oi' the brace-strip and fashioned at its opposite extremity to provide a clearance slot, a recess offset from the slot, a tongue and a prong; the recess being for matchiit of said suspension strip, the tongue for engagement of the strip-notch and the prong for bending in against the adjacent strip and tongue.

2. A pair of knockdown brackets each comprising a suspending strip, a brace-strip hinged at one end to the lower end of the suspending strip, and a shelf-supporting strip hinged to the other end of the brace noemer strip for detachable connection with said suspending strip; a jointed brace having the members thereof in pivotal connect-ion with the suspending Vstrips of the brackets, and a sheli' support in pivotal connection with a member of said brace.

3. A pair of knockdown brackets each comprising a suspending strip, a brace-strip hinged at one end to the lower end of the suspending strip, and a shelf-supporting strip hinged to the other end of the brace-strip for detachable connection with said suspending strip; a. jointed brace having the members thereof in pivotal connection with the suspending strips of the brackets, and a hanger in connection with a member of the brace.
