UNITED STATTATENT UFFICE.
HENRY I'I. FREY, 0F NEWTON, KANSAS.
HAMMER.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HENRY I-I. FREY, citizen of the United States, residing at Newton, in the county of Harvey and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hammers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to hammer attachments and has special reference to an attachment adapted to be used as a marker or gage.
Another object of this invention is the production of an 'eflicient means attached to the hammer for constituting a scraper.
lVith these and other objects in view this invention consists in certain novel combinations, constructions, and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure 1 is a side elevation showing the yoke member in an extended position, and illustrating how the device may be used for extracting nails. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the device showing the yoke in a closed position and illustrating how the same may be used as a planer or scraper. Fig. 8 is a central longitudinal section of the device. Fig. lis a transverse section thereof. Fig. 5 is a perspective of the improved yoke member. Fig. 6 is a bot tom plan View of the latching means.
Referring to the accompanying drawings by numerals 1 designates a hammer head which is mounted upon the handle 2 and is provided with the longitudinally extending guiding slots 3. A U-shape yoke member 4t which is provided with the longitudinally extending slot 5 is slidably mounted in the longitudinally extending guiding slots 8 and is prevented from coming entirely out by reason of the screw 6 which fits: within the slot 5 when the yoke is mounted upon the hammer head. It will also be seen that the side walls of the yoke member t extend divergingly toward their inner side as shown at 7 and rest within the converging side walls 8 of the longitudinally extending guiding slots 3 for forming an eflicient means to hold the yoke member upon the hammer head. The inner end of the yoke member f is provided with the shoulder portions 9 which are engaged by the latching members 10 for holding said yoke member in an extended position when it is desired to use the same as a fulcrum for extracting nails. Serial No. 716,829.
A cutting or scraping lip 17 is formed upon the outer portion of the yoke member 1 and may be used as a planer or scraper by closing the U-shape member 4t and drawing the hammer head across the surface to be planed. A marker or gage 18 is formed upon the opposite side of the U-shape memher 4 relative to the scraping lip 17. The inner face of this marker or gage is formed in alinement with the gage formed upon the side of the yoke member as shown at 19, so that if it is desired to make a line about one-half an inch or a similar distance from the edge of the board the gage would be drawn the desired distance from the head of the hammer by aid of the marks formed on the side of the U-shape yoke member.
It will be seen by referring to Figs. 1 and 2 that the scraping lip 17 is beveled toward the outer edge and the sides forming an efficient scraper, and it also prevents the hammer from slipping when withdrawing a nail since the edge digs into a support.
Having thus described the invention what is claimed as new, is:
A nail extractor comprising a body portion provided with pawl receiving pockets, awlspivotally mounted in said pockets and lying flush with the surface of said body portion when in a compressed position, a
fulcrum straddling said body portion and In testimony whereof I hereunto aflix my slidably connected therewith and positioned signature in presence of two Witnesses.
to extend across said 'awls and cover the same when moved inn ardly, and resilient HENRY FREY means for normally holding said pawls out- Vitnesses:
wardly to engage said fulcrum to hold the CHAS. C. HART,
same in an extended position. H. E. SUDERMAN.
