Description

C. H. HOPMANN.
METALLIC WINDOW. APPLICATION FILED JULY 1, 1912.
Patented July 15, 1913.
UNITED STATES CHARLES H. HOPMANN,
PATENT onrion.
or sr. LOUIS, MISSOURI.
METALLIC WIN-DOW.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 15, rate.
Application filed July 1, 1912. Serial No. 707,070.
is a specification containing a full, clear, and
exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawlngs, forming a part hereof.
My invention relates to improvements in,
metallic windows, and the object of my invention is to construct a combined jamb and parting strip which may be adjusted laterally of the window frame in order to take up play of'the sash between the uprights of the window frame.
lVith the above purposes inview my invention consists in certain novel features of construction and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described,
pointed out in the claim and illustrated by the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a vertical, central sectional elevation of a portion of a sheet metal window constructed according to my invention; Fig. 2 is a sectional plan taken on the line 22 of Fig. 1; and Fig. 3 is an enlarged, detail vertical sectional elevation of the means for adjusting the combined jamb and parting strip.
Referring by numerals to the accompanying drawings: 4 designates the hollow jamb of the window frame. In crosssection the jamb 4 is constructedof a single piece of sheet metal.
The numeral 5 designates the outside stop and 6 designates the-inside stop, both of which are formed integral with the hollow jamb-4. Formed out of the material of the hollow jamb and paralleling the inner faces of the stops 5 and 6 are the channels 7. and integral with thematerial of thejamb forming said channels arethe rectangular closures 8 for the vertical bars 9. The terminals of the single piece of sheet metal forming the hollow jamb are located in the closures.
The numeral 10 designates the sashes, each of which has at each of its side faces a flange 11 which extends toward the hollow jamb, the outermost flanges 11 bearing against the inner faces of the stops 5 and 6.
12 designates the adjustable jamb which extendsjthe full height of the window frame and has, at each of its side margins, a right angled flange 13 occupying the channels 7 of the hollow jamb 4. Formed integral with the adjustable jamb is a parting strip 14, and spaced apart from either side of the parting strip and carried by the adjustable jamb is a flange 15. The innermost flanges 11 of the sash ride in the grooves formed by the flanges 15 and the parting strip 14 of the adjustable jamb 12. Secured to the adjustable jamb 12 and at intervals throughout its height are the horizontal bars 16. These horizontal bars and the adjustable jamb 12 are perforated atintervals in order to receive the bolts 17, each of the bolts having an enlarged threaded portion 18 which is seated in a threaded opening formed in the vertical bar 8 which is fixed inthe jamb 4. Intermediate the ends of each of the bolts there is a. shoulder against which the horizontal bars 16 abut. I
20 designates a nut which is threaded to the reduced end of each of the bolts and which nut bears against the adjustable amb 12 and bar 16. The nut 20 and the corresponding end of the bolt is slotted in order to receive a tool, such as a screw driver, for turning the nut and bolt.
'A window constructed according to my invention and as illustrated and described is both dust and flame-tight and, by means of the adjustable jamb, the play of the sashes between the jambs of the window frame may be taken up oradjusted as desired.
In the practicaloperation of the window, assuming that there is a movement of the sashes between the jambs of the window frame that is tobe taken up, the operator places a screw driver in the slots formed in one of the bolts and in one of the nuts and, by turning the screw driver,,rotates the bolt and nut simultaneously, thereby moving the bar 16 laterally relative to the fixed bar 8. By moving the sashes all of the bolts and nuts are accessible for'the operation just described. In moving the bar 16, it is obvious that the parting strip 14 and the flanges 15 will be moved, and the play of the flanges 11 of the sashes will be taken up.
I claim:
In a window of the class described, a hol low jamb having integral stops, and channels formed in said jamb adjacent said stops, vertical bars secured to said jamb adjacent said channels, an adjustable jamb,
flanges on said adjustable jamb arranged to occupy the channels in the hollow jamb, in-
tegral flanges and a parting strip carried. by In testimony whereof, I have signed my the adjustable jamb, means whereby the adname to this specification, in presence of 10 gusftable jaInb may be moved anflihfilclll in two subscribing Witnesses.
i erent positions relative to t e o ow 5 jamb, and sashes provided With flanges ar- CHARLES HOPMANN' ranged to bear against the stops of the hol- Witnesses: low jamb and against the parting strip and E- L. VVA LA E, flanges of the adjustable jamb. I G. BUTLER.
