Be it known that l, l lnmn ll. CU'YlRI-ZLL, a citizen of the United States. and resident of Stonington. in the county oi? New .llondon and State of (\Hliltttit'lll. have invented z. new and useful improvement -in Cutting and holding Yilaehines. of which the followin a sptmilication.
This invention relates to an improvement in cutting and folding machines and has for it. object to provide means for so associating extra sheets ted trout a separate source of supply with sheets cut and fed from the main press that the said extra shee may occupy ditlerent positions in the completed signature.
This invention is more particularly directed to means for so associating sheets led from the main press web with insert sheets and a cover sheet th: tthe position of the insert sheets in the completed signature may be varied to suit diii'erentrequirements, the sources of insert sheet supply being" made iiulependently adjustable so that til 1 insert sheets may be ted to ditl 'erent positions in the width oi the main press sheets before the same are slit and deposited in the delivery carrier. 7
in the 21L(Ol1ll)ttll \lllj drawings, Figure l is a vertical longitudinal section through a portion of the cutting and folding machine embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a View in side elevation showing the geared connections for driving the several parts at their proper spe ds with relation to one another. The movements of the parts hcrcinabove described are so timed with respect to each other. that the rotary cutters 1T. 18. and the sheet collecting cylinder 5) complete two revolutions to one revolution of the folding cylinders. The rotary cutters 2 25. for the insert web and their transfer cylinder 11,
rot-ate one revolution for one revolution of the folding cylinders so that one insert. sheet is transferred to the male folding cylinder for two-sheets from the main web delivered from the collecting cylinder 9. The irregular gears 51, 52, are so shaped that the grippers 12 will be caused to travel at the speed of' the insert web at the time of engaging the advance edges of the insert sheet and will be caused to travel at the surface speedof the male folding cylinder at the time that the advance edge of the insert sheet is transferred to the grippers 5. The rotary cutters 33, 34, for the cover web and their transfer cylinder 13, complete one revolution for every revolution of the folding cylinders. The irregular gears 57, 58 are so shaped that the cylinder 13 will be caused to travel at the speed of the cover web at the time the grippers 14 engage the advance edge of the c ver sheet and at the surface speed of the female folding cylinder 4 at the time that the advance edge of the cover sheet. is transferred to the grippers 7.
1n,the form shown in Figsz l to (3 ill-- clusive, the insert sheets cut and fed from the source of insert supply are associated with, the collected sheets cut and fed from the main press web at the same point in the width of the sheets as the sheets cut and fed from the source of cover supply, the cover sheets being fed to one side of the collected group of sheets from the press and the insert sheets being fed to the other side of the collected group. In these figures at single cover sheet and a single insert sheet are shown as combined with the first. group of collected sheets from the press in the completed signature and the other three groups of collected sheets from the main press are shown as being successively dcposited within the so assembled group of cover. insert and main press shorts,
While I have shown the cover sheets and insert sheets as combined with the first group of collected sheets from the press in the completed signature. it is evident that these cover and insert sheets may be combined in any other manner with any of the four groups of collected sheets from the main press, by shifting the insert and cover sheet web rolls to any desired positions on their shafts laterally with respect to the machine.
In the form shown in Fig. 7, an extra insert web roll 22"" is shown as mounted on the cover web roll shaft in such a position that it will be interposed between the second and third collected groups of sheets cut and fed from the main press web.
In Fig. 8, an extra insert welt: roll 22*: is so mounted on the shaft of the insert web roll 22 that it will be interposed between the third and fourth collected groups of sheets cut and fed from the main press web;
lroceeding to describe the operation of i the collectedgroupof sheets.
the machine in the form shown in Figs. 1 to 6 lncluslve in which a completed s1gnature 1s formed having one cover and one insert sheet combined with four groups of.
collected sheets from the main press, .as in the manner illustrated in Fig; 9, the cutters 24, 25, cut successive sheets from the insert web and feed them between the guides 26,
engaged by thegrippers i l on thetransfer' cylinder 13. One cover sheet is transferred to the grippers 7 of the female folding cylinder 4 every revolution thereof when the grippers 7 and 14 are brought together. The rotary cutters 17 18, which are driven at twice the speed of the cutters for the insert and cover sheets, sever sheets frcm the web fed from the main press and feed them down between the guides 19 and 20; The collecting cylinder 9 is arranged to have its-grippers 10 collect two sheets thereon and then transfer the two sheets to the grip pers5 on. the male folding. cylinder 3 when the said grippers come together. As the grippers 5 and 7 on the two folding cy5in ders come together, the cover sheet on the female folding cylinder will be transferred to the male cylinder, the grippers 5 on the male cylinder then engaging the advance edge of one insert sheet, two sheets from the main press and one coversheet. As the folding mechanism of the two cylinders 3 and 4 is brought into coaction, the grippers 5 are opened to release'ihe advance edges of The assembledtcover, main pressand insert sheets are brought down between the tapes 67, (38 and the jaws 8 of the folding mechanism are openedto permit the tapes 67 68 to feed the collected sheets between the slit-ters 6t), 70,
from whence the completed collection of sheets dropsdnto the pockets on the carrier 71.1. After thefourth successive movementof the pocket carrier 71, a completed signature will be delivered each step of the car'- rier with'thc sheets so combined'that there will be a cover sheet, two main press sheets, an insert sheet and three collected groups of twomain press sheets in each completed signature.
It'can be readily understood that instead v of"transferring the advance edge of the to the'cylinder 3 but will be fed between the folding cylinders and have its advance edge releasedfrom the grippers 7 in ample time to permit the assembled insert, main web and cover sheets to be folded together and fed between the tapes 67, 68.
It will be seen that the machine as hereinabove set, forth accomplishes the assembling and folding together of sheets from the main'press and from the insert and cover supplies without the -necessity of employing formers, turning-harem carrying tapes. It is evident that various combinations of insert sheets within the collected groups of main press sheets in, the completed signature may be accom lished by varying the number of insert we supply rolls and varying the positions of the. rolls on both 'the insert Web. roll shaft and on the cover Web roll shaft; It will also be seen from the above descri tion that one or more insert sheets cut an'c fed from a previously printed source of insert supply may be combined with the sheets cut and fed from the main press web, and the sheets cut and fed'froin the source of sheet supply in such manner that the insert sheet or' sheets may be located at any desired point or points within the completed signature, this result being accomplished by the ability to feed the insert sheets to different points in the width of the main Web sheets and from both ends of the machine so that the insert sheet-s may occupy positions upon either. side of the several collected groups of main press sheets which go'to form the complete signature.
