Be it. known that l. ARTHUR J. M. llt-EGK- LIN, a'citizen of the United States of Amen ica, residing at Bay City, in the county ot' Bay and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Kites;v and l do hereby declare the following to be a full,clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to improvements in kites, and its object is to provide a knock down kite that can be easily-and quickly assembled for use, or disassembled and packed in close relation for storage or trans- -portation, and to provide the same with various new and useful features hereinafter fully described and particularly pointed out in the claims.

My device consists essentially of a detachable main plane; a tail frame detach ably secured thereto; braces pivoted to the trame of the main plane detachably secured to each other and to the tail frame and foldable against the frame of the main frame; and horizontal and vertical rudders detachably secured to the tail frame, as will more fully appear bylreference to the accompanying drawings, in which:

Like numbers refer to like parts in all of the figures.

1 represents the main plane of the devlce preferably cpmprsing a rect-angular frame covered by suitable material such as canvas or paper as at 2.

3 represent` braces hinged to the 'trame as at 4 and adapted to fold outward close to the same.

5 is a straight rod forming the lower member of the tail trame. 6 lthe upper member of the tail trame spaced apart from the lower member at the front end by cross bars 8, and at its rear end curved down and thence parallel with the bar 5 and 1n contact therewith, being secured thereto by a suitable lashing 7 wound around the same. 9 is a horizontal rudder fixed on the rod 5 near the rear end of the tail frame by means o1 clipsI 10 and a thumb screw l1.

12 is a vertical rudder secured to the rear end of the rod 5 by means of clips 10 and thulnb screw 11.

13 is a hook and 14 an eye by which the ends of the braces are detachably secured to each other when in use.

Proj ecting-oppositely from the said frame and opposite the cross bars 8 are pins 15 which detachably engage the adjacent ends of the braces 3 below, and the middle of the :trame of the plane l above` and thus connect the same and hold the tail frame properly positioned vertically, and at right angles to said plane.

The tail frame and both rudders are provided with paper or canvas covers :2 or other suitable material the same as the main plane of the device.

The operation of my invention will be readily understood from the foregoing description. By loosening the thumb screws 11 the rudders can be quickly removed from the tail frame and by detaching the hook and eye 13 and 14 the tail frame is in like manner easily detached `from the trame of the plane l. The parts can then be readily arranged as shown in Fig. 6 whereby' they will be in compact form suitably arranged for transportation or storage, and can again be quickly reassembled for use as occasion may require.

In flying this kite the string or cord may be readily attached thereto in any convenient manner `preferably to the front' end of the tail frame and properly adjustable vertically thereon, this being obvious they string is not shown in the drawings.

What l claim is 1. A kite7 comprising a main plane having a frame, a tail frame comprising a. straight lower rod and an upper rod spaced apart therefrom atits forward endby vertical bars and curved at its rear end to engage the lower rod and attached thereto, a horizontal rudder and a vertical rudder detachably secured to the tail trame, and means for detachably securing the tail trame to the frame ot the main plane.

A kite, comprising a rectangular main plane provided with a suitable cover, a tall v:trame comprising two rods spaced apart at the front by two vertical bars one of said rods being bent at the rear of said bars toward the other rod and attached thereto, a vertical rudder and a horizontal rudder detachably secured to one of said rods, braces hinged to the main plane and engaging the tail frame to hold the same perpendicular to the main plane, and means for attaching the tail frame to the braces and to the main plane.

A kite, comprising a rectangular main frame, a tail fra me consisting of a straight lower rod, an upper rod spaced apart from f the lower rod'at the front, vertical bars be? tween rods near the front, the upper rod being bent downward and rearward and attached to the lower rod one of Said rods also` being prolonged rearward to receive the rudders, braces pivotally attached to the main frame at one end, means for attaching the braces to each other at the free end, pins voppositely projecting from the tail frame toengage the braces and main plane,

a horizontal rudder and a vertical rudder each having clips thereon to receive the extended rod of the tail frame, and set screws to secure the rudders on the rod. A 4. A kite, comprising a rectangular main plane, a tail frame havi `one long straight lower rod and a shorteiilent upper rod secured to the lower'rod at the rear end and spaced apart therefrom at the front end, verticalbars between the rods and beneath the main plane, braces vhinged to the` main plane at one end and provided with detachable astenings at the other end, pins in the tail frame to engage the main plane and the braces, a horizontal rudder and a vertical rudder each provided with'clips to receive the lower rod of the tail frame and set screws to retain the rudders on the rod.
