COMBINED BENCH AND SEESAW.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 8, 11.913.
Application filed July 12, 1912. Serial No. 708,992.
Be it known that I, Davin J. Retains, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Benches and Seesaws; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description oi. the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to improvements in see-saw benches.
The principal object of the invention is to provide a bench which may quickly and easily be converted into a see-saw.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent from the following description, and with particular reference to the accompany- I mg drawings.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a perspec tive View of the device when used as a bench, and Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the device when used as a seesaw.
Referring particularly to the accompanying drawings 10 represents end boards, each of which is suitably supported by the leg members 11. Extending longitudinally under the boards 10, and secured by its edges to said boards, are the bracing strips 12, the middle portions 13 of which project upwardly so that their upper edge faces lie in the same plane as the upper face of the boards 10. Secured transversely on the inner ends of the boards 10 are the arms lat of the bench, to which arms is suitably secured the back member 15. The arms and the back member are immovably secured to the boards, and do not change their relation thereto, when the device is converted into a see-saw. The ends of the strips 12 are socured to the leg members 11 in the rabbets 11 by any desired or well known means.
Pivotally attached together, and to the strips 12 are the movable seat portions 17, which when the device is to be converted into a seesaw, are swung on their pivot, and locked in the position shown in Fig. 2, by means of the latch 18. The latch is pivoted in a recess 18 on one of the seat portions and is provided with an opening 20 in its free end for the reception of the head 21 of abutton 22 mounted in a small recess in the other seat section.
Secured to the free end of each of the seat portions 17 is a foot piece 19, which extends a short distance beyond each edge of the leg and rests on the lloor or other surface, when the device is used as a seesaw, but tits snugly within a cutaway portion and against the arm 1-l-, when folded into bench :torm.
The seat boards 10 have the curved cuts it) on each side so that a person may straddle the same and be seated comfortably, the l mbs of the person lilting into said cuts. lhus the round seats 2;) are Jlj'ormed.
From the foregoing, and with reference to Figs. 1 and 2 ol the drawings, it will be apparent that when it is desired to convcrt the bench into a seesaw, it is onlv necessary to invert the bench, swing the scat portions 17 into the position shown in Fig. 2, and latch the same by means of the latch members 18. The passengers then sit on the outer ends of the boards 10, and grasp the leg members. The seesaw can then be rocked on the pivot ol the seat portions.
"What is claimed is:
l. A combined bench and see saw comprising spaced end boards, legs for supporting the boards, longitudinal strips each secured by one edge to one lace of each ol the boards, a bench back rigidly secured to the boards, and a seat consisting of a pair ol members pivoted to the strips and to each other, the said strip having rabbcts near each end, and foot pieces on the free ends of the seat members lilting into said rabbets and pro jecting beyond the edge faces of the said members.
111 a combined bench and see saw, a seat, a back for the scat, legs for supporting the seat, longitudinal bracing strips beneath the seat, arms on the back, the part of the scat between the arms and the braces being formed in two portions pivotally connected to the bracing strips and to each other, said seat portions being capable of movement toward each other to form a central support for the device when inverted as a see saw, the legs of the device serving as hand rails for the ends oi the see saw, and means tor locking the scat portions in supporting position.
3. A bench including stationary seat portions, movable seat portions adjustable from their seat :torming positions into positions to centrally support the remainder of the bench above the plane upon which said seat portions stand in their seat forming the seat port-ions to form a bench seat in conjunction therewith.
6. The combination with a tilting element carrying spaced seat portions, pivoted members carried intermediately of the seat portions for supporting the tilting element, said members being adapted to be shifted into position to form a continuation of the seat portions.
In testimony whereof, I affix my signa- 25 ture in presence of two witnesses.
