Description

aunt define.
JOHN W. CURTIS, OF-BA TH, NEW YORK.
Zetters Patent No; 106,670, dated August 23,1870.
IMPROVEMENT IN PORTABLE GATE-FENCE The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patept and snaking part of the s'ame.
To all whom'it may concern.-
Be it knownt-hat-I, J cm: W. CURTIS, of Bath, in the county of Steuben and State of New York, have invented a new and imprmed Port-able Gate-Fence; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full,
' clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same,
reference being bad to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 represents aside elevation of my'improved gate-fence.
Figure 2 is a horizontal sectional view of the same,
taken on the line a; z, tig.'1.
Figure 3 is a horizontal sectional view of the same, showing a modification of my invention.
Similar letters'of reference indicate like parts.
This invention relates to a new manner of hanging and secnring the panels of a fence tothe posts, and consists in having" the battens or cross-bars, by which the rails of the panels are connected, slotted, and fitted over books or L-shaped pins, that are secured to the sides of the posts; This arrangement has very great advantages over the ordinary method of attaching and hanging the panels, as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
A represents the posts, which are driven into the ground or otherwise secured in the ordinary manner.
B B are the fence-panels, which consist of the horizontal rails a a, of the battens or veltical cross-bars b b, and vertical or'diagonal braces c, if desired. 7
The battens are providedwvith slats which fitover hooks or L-shaped pins (5 d, which ate secured in the posts, as is clearly'shownin fi 1.
\Vhcn the posts cannot be had of considerable width, the panels are hung alternately to the front aml back of the posts, so as to form a zigzag fence, as shown in fin. 2 v V Wlien the posts can be had wide enough, the panels are all secured on the same side of the posts, whereby a regular, smooth fence is produced, as is'clearly shown in fig. 3. g
By this arrangement of hanging the panels, afence canbe quickly put up,-quickly removed and repaired.
It some of the postsare decayed, they can be taken out and replaced without much trouble, andwithont injuring any portion of the rails.
\V'hen itis desired to prevent animals, such as hogs, &c., from ising the panels, it is only neoessary tointrodnce wedges between the hooks d and the next rail below the same, as is indicated by red lines at c, in fig. 1.
Picket and all other kinds of fences can .be hung in the same manner, and will certainly be much cheaper, easier repaired, and more convenient than any fences now inuse.
I' claim as new and Patent- As an improvement in portable fences, the slotted battens b, when used in combination with the hooks d, posts A, and panels B, in the manner and for the purposes herein set forth and described.
J. \V. CURTIS.
