ADJUSTABLE GAGE AND MARKER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 8, 1913.
J Application filed July 1, 1912. Serial No. 707,012.
To all whom it may concern lie it known that I, EMANUEL Frrz, a citizen of the United States, residing at Red Cloud, in the county of \Vebster and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Gages and Markers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the ac companying drawings.
This invention relates to an adjustable self-marking sliding gage which is designed more particularly for marking clapboards, so that they may be sawed off at the proper place in their lengths.
The primary object of the present invention is to provide a device of this character which may be folded in a compact form when not in use, and which possesses the required amount of durability, simplicity and cheapness in the cost of manufacture.
A further object of the present invention is to provide a gage of this character with adjustable guide blocks which may be adjusted to rest upon any beveled casing or corner boards, and which is also provided with a handle which may be adjusted at any angle or folded upon the gage when not in use.
With the above and other objects in view, this invention consists of the novel details of construction, combination, formation and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings has been illustrated a simple and preferred form of the invention, it being, however, understood that no limitation is necessarily made to the precise structural details therein exhibited, but that the rightis reserved to any changes, alterations and modifications to which recourse may be had Within the scope of the invention and without departing from the spirit or sacrificing the efliciency of the same.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a section taken on the line 22 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of one of the guide blocks.
Reference now being had to the accompanying drawings wherein corresponding parts are illustrated throughout the seve 'al views, 10 indicates a frame or holder for the device which comprises one continuous flat piece of material having its extremities bent at right angles thereto, as at 11, and
provided at its intermediate portion with an enlarged semicircular extension 12 which is made integral with the holder and lying in the same plane therewith.
The marking element indicated by the numeral 18 consists of a bar having one longitudinal edge thereof provided with teeth 14. These teeth are provided with rounded cutting edges which are adapted to engage the clapboard without tearing the board and thereby making a sharp smooth line in marking the same. This cutting element is adapted to be permanently secured to one face of the holder 10 by means of set screws 15. These set screws may be removed when desired when substituting a new cutting element should the same become worn or broken.
Secured lo the medial portion of the extension 12 and upon the upper face thereof, is a handle 16 which is formed of one continiuius piece of sheet metal being bent at right angles adjacent the outer extremity and provided with a gripping portion 17. This handle is pivolally secured upon one face of the extension '19 by means of a countersunk bolt 18. It is obvious from this construction that the handle may be swung at any angle in relation with the holder, and may also lie parallel therewith when not in use, so that the same will take up but little space when being stored in a tool box. It is obvious when this handle is swung parallel with the bod y portion of the holder, the offset portion 19 will lie adjacent one of the outer edges thereof thereby folding the device in a compact form which will take up but a small amount of space.
To provide means for holding the handle at any angle with relation to the holder, I provide upon the upper face thereof a coil spring ZOhaving an otlset extension 21. This coil spring is made of one continuous piece of copper wire or any other suitable material and the offset portion is adapted to extend through an aperture 22 formed within the handle and the apertures 23 formed within the extension 12, which will obviously hold the handle at the desired angle.
Guide blocks, indicated by the numeral 24, are pivotally secured to the angle extensions 11 of the holder by means of stud bolts 25. The shorter arm of each of these guide blocks is provided with a segmental slot 26 through which extends a stud bolt 27 mounted within the angular extensions 11 whereby the guide blocks may apparently be held at any angle desired to fit any beveled casing or corner boards. The longer arms of these guide blocks are provided with cut away portions 28 which are adaptedto rest upon the corner board for holding the cutting element in a line parallel witlnthe said board.
The operation of this invention will be readily understood to those familiar with the art taken in connection with the foregoing detailed description and operation of the various parts thereof, and it is to be further understood that other minor details in construction, changes as to form and operation may be resorted to that come within the scope of the present invention without departing from the spirit thereof.
l/Vhat I claim is 1. In a device of the character described, the combination of a holder, of a cutting element mounted thereupon, guide blocks adjustably mounted upon the extremities of said holder, a handle pivotally connected to said holder, and means for adjustably holding said handle, substantially as described.
2. In a device of the character described, the combination of a holder comprising one continuous piece of metal having its extremities bent at right angles thereto, a marking element mounted upon one face of said holder, guide blocks adjustably mounted upon said angular portions, and a handle secured to the medial portion of said holder, substantially as described.
3. In a device of the character described, the combination of a holder, comprising one continuous piece of material having its eX- tremities bent at right angles thereto, a marking element mounted upon one face handle in an adjusted position, substantially as described.
4. In a device of the character described, comprising aholder, a cutting element mounted thereon, a handle pivotally mounted upon said holder, an ofiset portion formed in said handle, means for holding said handle in an adjusted position and the said offset portion adapted to lie adjacent one end of the holder when the body portion of the handle lies substantially parallel with that of the holder, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
5. In a device of the character described, the combination of a holder, a cutting ele ment detachably mounted upon one face of said holder, the holder being formed with a semi-circular extension adjacent the medial portion thereof and the extension being formed with a plurality of apertures, a handle pivotally mounted upon said semicircular extension, the said handle having an aperture formed therein adapted to register with any one of the'plurality of apertures in the extension, and locking means carried by said handle and adapted to ex tend through registering apertures for holding the handle in an adjusted position.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
EMANUEL FITZ.
