JOSEPH N. WILKINS, OF CENTRALIA, WASHINGTON.
COMBINED SIIOVEL AND SCRAPER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 8, 1913.
Application filed August 20, 1912. Serial No. 716,047.
b all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J osnrrr N. IVILKINS, a citizen of the United States, residing at (lentralia, in the county of Lewis and State of \Vashiugton, have invented new and useful Improvements in Combined Shovels and Scrapers, of which the following is a specification.
An object of the invention is to provide a combined shovel and scraper.
The invention embodies, among other fea' turcs, a device that can be cheaply manufactured and which will be durable and cilicient in use either as a shovel or as a scraper, the device being held in one position when used as a shovel and reversed when used as a scraper.
In the further disclosure of the invention reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, constituting a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference denote corresponding parts in all the views, and in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device; Fig. 2 is a rear elevation; Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse sectional view taken on the line in Fig. 1; and Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the socket plate.
Referring more particularly to the views, use is made of a single piece of sheet-like material 10 cut and bent to form a back plate 11 and a front plate 12, a handle 13 being provided for engagement with the back plate 11 and the front plate 12 being preferably provided with a beveled edge i l constituting a cutting and scraping edge, the mentioned front plate 12 being extended forwardl at an angle to the back plate 11 with the upper extremity of the back plate 11 bent slightly to properly receive the handle 13, the rear face of the back plate 11 being also provided with a tapered groove 15 in which the lower tapered end of the handle 13 is placed. Suitable end plates 10 are preferably riveted to the back and front plates 11 and 12 respectively, thus forming a shovel 17 In order to secure the handle 13 on the back plate 11. a tapered securing plate 18, grooved to conform to the taper of the handle, is riveted to the rear of the back plate 1 1. and to the lower face of the front plate 12, as shown, thus forming a socket 19 with the back plate 11 and in which the tapered end of the handle 13 is placed. Gripping cars 20 are preferably formed with the plate 18 and adapted to project forwardly over the upper edge of the back plate 11 as shown in order that the securing plate can be more readily and firmly secured to the plates 11 and 12.
It will now be seen that when the device is in the position shown in Fig. 1, the same can be conveniently used as a shovel and when it is desired to use the device as a scraper the same is turned around so that only the scraping edge 1-l of the device will touch the ground. Now by imparting a forward and backward movement to the handle 13 the scraping edge 14, passing over the ground, will scrape the same in the same manner that the usual scraper now ordi- .narily employed accomplishes the desired result.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
In a combined scraper and shovel, a single piece of material bent to form a back plate and a front plate, end plates on the said back plate and front plate, a handle, a securing plate secured to the said back plate and said front plate to form a socket adapted to receive an end of the said handle, and ears formed with the said securing plate and projecting over an edge of the back plate adjacent the said socket.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOSEPH N. \VILKINS.
\Vitncsses E. WINTER, JAMES P. H. OALLAI-IAN.
