JOHN E. MOORE, 0F NELSON, BRITISH COLUMBIA, CANADA.
LIFE-SAVING SUIT.
To all wh-0m, t may concern Be it known that I, JOHN E. Hoorn, n subject of the King ot Great Britain, residing at Nelson, in the Province Ot British Columbia and Dominio-n of Canada, have invented new and useful Improvements in Life-Saving Suits, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is an improved life saving suit for use in preventing persons Yfrom drowning and from being chilled by the water, the invention consisting in the con struction, combination and arrangement ot devices, hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings z-Eigure l is a 'i'ront elevation of a life saving suit constructed in accordance with my invention, showing the front ot' the suit open and showing the belt skirt deflated. Fig. 2 is a similar view, showing the fro-nt of the suit closed and fastened and the belt skirt inflated. Fig. 3 is a detail vertical sectional view of the same.
My improved life saving suit is made preferably of rubber cloth but may be made of any other suitable material which is water-proof. The suit is a union suit, the trousers 1 and the body 2 being united. The body and the upper po-rtion of the trousers are formed with hems 3 which are provided with suitable 'fastening devices f1. In the front ot' the body and upper portion of the trousers is a V-shaped gore 5 which forms the front of the garment and enables it to be readily donned and taken off, the hems 3 overlapping the sides ot' the gore front and 'fastening across the same after the suit has been put on, so that when the hcms are secured together by the fastening devices 4, the suit is caused to tit closely around the body of the wearer. The trousers legs are formed with feet 6 to receive the feet oit the wearer and the sleeves 7 of the body are formed with glove portions 8 so that the body of the wearer including his hands and feet is entirely covered and protected.
A skirt belt 9 is also provided, which is open in front and the upper edge of which Patented July 8, 1913.
Serial No. 723,969.
is sewed or otherwise secured to the body o'fE the suit at a point just below the i rm pits, 50 the skirt belt extending entirely around the body of the suit and being provided at its ends with fastening devices f1 t) by means ot which its ends may be secured together in liront ot the body. This skirt belt is also made of. rubber or other suitable waterproof material and comprises an inner fabric l1 and an outer itabric l2 and is adapted to be inflated with air. lVhen the belt skirt is deflated it hangs down around the body o't the garment. lVhen inflated, it serves to give such buoyancy to the person using the suit as to prevent him trom sinking. A. tube l?, is connected to the skirt belt and is provided with a suitable mouth piece 1li provided with a suitable valve indicated at l5. This Vflexible tube enables the skirt belt to be blown up and inflated by the wearer of the suit, as will be readily understood. r
Thilo I have herein shown and described a preferred .'form of my invention, I would have it understood that changes may bo made in the forin, proportion and coustruction of the several parts without departing from the spirit ot my invention and within the scope oi the appended claim.
I claim:
A lite saving union suit comprising a body and trousers and provided with an inflatable slv'irt belt extending around the body, the body and trousers being open at the front and being provided with a gore in said open portion and also with 'fastening 85 devices at the sides of the said gore, the said inflatable skirt belt being also open at the front and provided at its ends with fastening devices.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence ot two witnesses.
JOHN E. M GORE.
Witnesses:
HARRY E. DOUGLAS, WILLIAM IRVINE.
