Description

J. czvzmbwsm INFLATABLE SWIMMING GARMENT Dec. 4, 1923;
Filed Aug Fatented Dec. 4, 1923.
UNITED STATES JULIAN GZYZYKOWSKI, 0F HARRISON, NEW JERSEY.
INFLATABLE SWIIMHIING GARMENT.
Application filed August It], 1923.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JULIAN (lzyzvnowsnr, a citizen of Poland, residing at Harrison, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Inflatable Swimming Garments, of which the following is a speci fication.
This invention relates to garn'ients worn by bathers and swimmers and has as one of its objects to provide a garment in the form of a tight fitting, sleeveless vest having short bloomers permanently attached and carrying an interior inflatable bag-like element adapted to be filled with air, under moderate compression, whereby the body of the user may be sustained and supported when in the water.
Another purpose is to produce a relatively thin, light, impervious structure, adapted to produce a buoyant effect when inflated and capable of being attached to the inner side of any vest-like bathers robe whereby danger from drowning is largely overcome and floating rendered easy.
These several aims are accomplished by the novel design, construction and arrangement of parts hereafter described and shown in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view illustrating an embodiment of the invention as applied, parts being broken away to show the con struction.
Figure 2 is a front view of the same, parts being broken away for the like purpose.
Figure 3 is a greatly enlarged, fragmentary cross sectional view of the buoyant element.
In the drawing, the numeral. 5 designates a convention type of bathing suit, as worn by men, the same having the usual arm holes 6 and short legs 7 over which the skirt portion 8' of the vest extends.
This garment may be made oi any suit able fabric, preferably knitted wool in full fashion effect, and is to all intents and purposes an ordinary commercial article.
The float or buoyant device, generally indicated by the numeral 10, is essentially triangular in profile when extended flat, its point or apex 11 being uppermost and held by stitching to the collar or the garment, at the front inner side as shown.
The level base is disposed horizontally and attached at the lower corners 12 of the Serial No. 656,706.
triangle to the sides, these corners extending nearly to the back 01'' the garment, completely over the breast and around the sides, and if preferred, this bag-like structure may be secured by sewing along its marginal eijlges or attached at intervals to remain in proper position.
The attachment is composed preferably of an outer woven textile fabric casing and an inner bag composed of two sheets of thin rubber 13 and 14 bound by a flexible rubber tape 15, enclosed in the fabric casing.
At the apex 11 is inserted an air inlet valve 16 provided with a flexible tube 17 to which the mouth may be applied in filling the rubber bag with air, the valve automatically closing at each inspiration of air and capable of being depressed when it is desired to deflate the same.
In operation, the bag, in its casing as attached within the garment, is inflated and then the garment is drawn over the body of the wearer, tending to flatten out the distending elements, but preserving the buoyant effect produced by the air.
From the foregoing it will be seen that a simple device has been disclosed capable of fulfilling the expressed objects, whereby the danger of drowning is minimized, and that the same is cheap to manufacture and has no objectionable appearance.
Having thus described my invention and set forth the manner of its operation and use. what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The combination with a bathing garment, of a triangular rubber bag secured at its respective corners to the neck and waist to extend over the breast and sides, and means for inflating said bag.
The combination with a bathing garment, of a substantially triangular rubber bat; secured at its apex to the neck of the garment and at its lower corners within the garment, a fabric covering for said bag, and means for inflatingsaid he The combination with a bathing garment, oil? a rubber bag formed triangularliy, textile casing enveloping said bag, said c-sing being attached to the inner side of said garment, and means permitting inflation or deflation of said bag.
Tn witness whereof I have affixed my signature.
