DRIER FOR RELIEF PRINTING.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed July 31, 1912.
Patented July 1, 1913.
Serial No. 712,577.
following is a specification.
My invention relates to driers, and particularly to a device for drying relief printing on cards, envelops, bristol board, and
like heavy material, and is especially adapted to grip and support the printed material while heat is being applied to it, and to de posit it automatically in a hopper or re- :ceptacle.
A further object is to provide a device ofthis character which will be inexpensive in its manufacture, simple in operation, and durable and efficient in service.
Referring to the drawings wherein is illustrated a preferred embodiment of my invention and in which like numerals are used to designate corresponding parts throughout the several views: Figure 1 is a top plan View of the device, Fig. 2 is a front elevation, and Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 designates the base, upon which is mounted a socket 2 which serves as the support for a vertical shaft Upon the shaft 3 is secured in any desired position a collar 5 by means of a set-screw 6. This collar is adjustable vertically upon the shaft and serves as a stop for a sleeve 7 surrounding the shaft 3. Upon the sleeve 7 issecured, as by a key, a worm wheel 8, engaged by a worm 9 carried by a shaft 10 journaled in bearings 11. The shaft 10 is provided with a pulley 12 to which power is to be applied from a motor or the like (not shown). Rigidly secured to the flanged upper end of the sleeve 7 is a rotatable platform 13 provided with a central aperture through which the rod 3 passes. This platform is provided with a plurality of clamping members 14 adapted to grip the cards 15.
I have shown the rotatable plat-form as being provided with six clamping members but do not wish to limit myself in this par ticular as any desired number may be used. Each clamp comprises a main portion 16 extending radially from the center of the platform 13, and provided at its outer end with a segmental bar 17 in alinement With 'the table onto the platform 13.
the circumference of the said platform. The portion 16 is pivoted as shown at 18 between ears 19 upon the platform 13. Near the inner ends of the clamping members I provide expansible coil springs 20 to hold the segmental bars in engagement with the platform. The inner ends of the portions 16 are provided with rollers 21.
Mounted upon the base 1 is a hopper 22 adapted to receive the cards or the like after they are dried. Extending horizon-- tally from the hopper and flush with the top of the disk 13 is a feed table 23 provided with a rib or flange 21 for a purpose to be described. Also mounted upon the base 1 is a lamp or stove 25 of any well known or preferred type. The top of the lamp is disposed adjacent the edge of and somewhat below the platform 13. Secured upon the central stationary shaft 3 is a disk 26, one side of which is lower than the other, thus constituting a cam.
In the operation of the device, power is applied to the pulley l2, and the platform 13 is rotated through the medium of the Worm 9, worm wheel 8, and sleeve 7. As the platform rotates, the rollers 21 on the clamping members bear against the lower side of the disk 26. It will be noted that owing to one side of the disk 26 being lower than the other, the inner ends of the clamping members will be depressed when opposite the hopper 22, and will be allowed to rise again opposite the feed table 23. Each card to be treated by heat is laid upon the feed table 23 with one edge against the guide rib 24, and its end projecting beyond As the inner end of a clamping member passes from under the depressed portion of the disk 26, the segmental bar will be forced downwardly by the spring'20 and will grip the card 15 against the platform 13. As the platform revolves it will carry the card extending therefrom over the stove or lamp 25, thus heating the card. During the remainder of the revolution the card will cool, and when the inner end of the clamping member again reaches the depressed portion of the disk 26, the segmental bar will be elevated, allowing the card to be dropped into the hopper. This act-ion is continuous, and identical for each of the clamping members.
It will be understood that various changes in the shape, construction and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or limiting the scope of the claims.
Having thus described my invention what I claim is:
1. A device of the character described comprising a rotatable platform, means to rotate said platform, means upon said platform to grip an article to be heated, and means for applying heat to said article.
2. A device of the character described comprising a rotatable platform, means to rotate said platform, clamping means upon said platform adapted to engage an article to be heated, means for closing and opening said clamping means, and means for applying heat to said article.
3. A device of the character described comprising a rotatable platform, means to rotate said platform, clamping means upon said platform adapted to engage an article to be heated, means to close and open said clamping members, means for applying heat to said article, a feed table, and a receiving hopper.
4. A device of the character described, comprising a rotatable platform, means for rotating said platform, clamping means upon said platform for holding an article to be heated, said clamping means comprising a bar pivoted intermediate its ends, a bar at its outer end conforming to the periphery of the platform and a roller upon its inner end, and being closed by a spring and re leased by a disk, means for applying heat to said articles, a feed table, and a receiving hopper.
5. A device of the character described comprising a rotatable platform, means to rotate said platform, said means comprising a worm wheel secured upon the shaft of the platform and a worm, clamping means upon said platform adapted to engage articles to be heated, means to close and open said clamping means, means for applying heat to said articles, a hopper disposed adjacent the platform at a point at which said clamping members are released, and a feed table adjacent said platform at a point at which said clamping members engage the platform.
6. A device of the character described comprising a base, a Vertical shaft rigidly connected therewith, a disk mounted upon the upper end of said shaft, a stop collar adjustably secured upon said shaft, a sleeve revolubly mounted upon said shaft, a worm wheel upon said sleeve, a worm in engagement with said worm wheel, means for applying power to said worm, a rotatable platform secured to said sleeve, clamping members upon said platform adapted to engage cards to be heated, said clamping members comprising pivoted spring-pressed bars, means for applying heat to said articles, a hopper mounted on said base and in proximity to said platform, and a feed table extending from said hopper.
7. A device of the character described comprising a rotatable platform, means to rotate said platform, means upon said platform to pick u) and carry an article to be heated, means for applying heat to said article, and means for releasing said article from said means for picking up and carrying said article.
in testimony whereof I hereto affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
