CHARLES BUTLER, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS PAPER VESSEL.
incanta.
Specification of Letters Patent.
lPatentedJuly i igilg.
Application led June 11, 1910. Serial No. 566,316.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it 'known that L'CHAnLl-:s H. BUTLER, citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Paper Vessels, of which the following is a specification.
.This invention relates to improvements i1 the construction of paper vessels 'of the type designed to be folded or collapsed when no in use and to be extended into cup` shape when intended for use as a receptacle fr liquid.
The especial object of the improvements which form the'subject matter of this applimition-v'for' patent is to produce a vessel of the. character stated that can be cheaply manufactured, lcompactly foldedand when extendedavill afford a suitable container for `liquid substances supported by a convenient handle which may be grasped by the user.
In the `accompanying drawing I have illustrated apreferred adaptation of my invention in the. following views'.
Figure l shows, partly in elevation andpartly in section, a paper vessel constructed according to my invention, when in position foruse; Fig. 2 illustrates the same Vessel whencolla'psed or folded; Fig. 3 is a vertical section onl the line A-A of Fig. 2; Fig. 4 is a plan View of the metallic supporting device for the vessel; F ig. 5 is an edge vand sectional view of said metallic supporting device; and Fig. 6 shows the manner of forming the body of the paper vessel from a suitable blank. y
Referring to the details of the drawing, 7 represents generally a cup shaped vessel formed from suitable paper or similar dexible material by pressing a sheet or blank of `the proper shape over a trunco-conical t'emplet l0, the surplus material in the blank being pressed into folds as indicated at 7a,
and the sides ofthe vessel flaring outwardly from the bottom to the upper edge. At one point in the side wall of the vessel 7, and near the upper-'edge thereof, a hole 7 h is made in which is inserted4 an eyeletV 7c of tough andv sti' material. The free upper edge ofthe vvessel is shown as provided with an inward-ly b entiiange or rim 7d but' this feature of construction may be omitted if The cuphandle and supporting device consists of a'wire member 8,'bent into the in its unfolded condition, handle 8? from a vertical to a horizontal 7b and the bail form of aring having a diameter approximatingthe diameter of the upper edge of the cup 'or vessel 7.v The ends of the wire are twisted together for a portion of their length as :it-8, to ferm a grip or handle. Applied to the Wire member at the, junction ofthe handle' with the ring portion, is a clip 9 formed from a strip of thin sheet metal bent upon itself to provide two legs and cut away at its bent portion to|provide yokes 9a which iit closely. around the portions of the wire member 8 where the member 9 is suspended. The legs of the member 9 are slightly indented as at 9b. This supporting melnber 'is attached to the vessel at a point directly ,opposite `the opening 7b by applying the legs of the'strap 9 to opposite sides 'of the wall of the vessel and pressing the indentations into the saidwalls so as to provide a firm grippingor frictional engagement of the legs with said walls. When in this position, the member l8, which may be properly termed the. bail, will have a pivotal action on the clamping member 9. At a point directly opposite thel handle 8e of the bail,'the hoolrSb is formed, either by bending the wire at this point upon itself, or by attaching said hook to the ring 8.
In a device constructed substantially as described, it will be apparent that when the bail is secured to thevessel and the latter is by depressing the position, theering 8 will be'pressed into the rim 7d and. thel hook 8b will be pushed into the eyeleted opening 7b, and tlius the cup or Vessel will be supported around its periphery or rim by said'wire member which in turn will be supported by the fingers of the user grasping Vthe handle 8a. When it is desired to fold or collapse the vessel, the hook will be disengaged from the opening memberwill be brought down against the side walls of the vessel, as indicatedin Fig. 3. If the vessel is then folded along lines of fold which will be provided in the manufacture of the device, it wilil assume the shape indicated in Figs. 2 an 3.
It will befapparent that if the inwardly turned or over anging {iange 7d is omitted from the upper edge of the vessel, the latter desired, as is not essential to the operativeness of my invention.
will besupported at the point of attachment of the legs 9 andthe point of of the hook 8b .with theeyeleted oA ening 7b, and for all practical purposes (it'llo' engagement aov ico
'eing unto the bottom of the latter, and have a sub` stantial width, hence serve to reinforce the sides ofthe vessel throughout a considerable portion of theirarea, and thus give a rigidity to the device when in use that enables it to properly support a greater weight than.
would otherwise be possible.
While I have referred to the strip from which the legsl 9 are formed as being thin sheet metal, it may be of a pa er or cardboard material ossessing .tie requisite strength and sti ness and secured to the sides of the vessel by a suitable adhesive.
.Having thus described my invention what I claim as new, is
1. A vfoldahle vessel having supporting means onsisting of clamping members enraging the opposite faces of the side wall of .the vessel, and a bail pivoted on said clamping members and provided with a handle adapted to extend at right angles from said side wall, and with a hook adapt- 'ed to engage a suitable opening in said vessel, said bail foldable Within the vessel when the latter is in its folded position.
'2. A foldable vessel having an opening vnear its upper edge, and means for supporting said vessel in operative position, said means. consisting' of stiff flat members engaging the side wall of said vessel, and a wire member pivot-ally connected with said at' membersy and provided with a' handle, a ring and ahook, said ring fitting within and bearingv against the rim of said vessel,
and the hook engaging said'openingwhen the 'vessel is in operative posltion.
In testimony whereof I ainmy signature in thevpresence of two witnesses CHARLES H. BUTLER;
