a citizen of the United States, residing at W'orcester, in the county of Worcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tuft Yarn Carriers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to tuft yarn carriers for'AXminster looms, and particularly to tuft yarn carriers for wide looms, having center bearings for the contiguous journals of the tuft yarn spools, where two or more spools are used on one carrier, and my in vention particularly relates to the center.

The tuftya-rn carriers of the class referred to having spools attached thereto are carried in a chain, which chain has a rotary movement, ordinarily in a substantially vertical plane, and the tuft yarn carriers, and the spools attached thereto, are at predetex mined times removed from said chain and carried down to insert the tuft yarns into the fabric, in the usual and well known way. In the rotary movement of the chain, carrying the tuft yarn carriers, and the spools attached thereto, the spools at certain times occupy av position, in which the bearings for the ends of the spools are below the spool, or in a plane underneath the spool, so that in case of movable or pivotally mounted bearings for the ends of the spool, itjs necessary to so construct the movable part of the bearing thatit will be held in proper position and locked to the stationary part of the bearing, no matter in what position the tuft yarn carrier and the spool or spools thereon may be, otherwise when the spools are in a reverse position and below the 'tuft yarn carriers, the movable portion of the hearing would. become detached from the stationary part, and allow the end of the spool to drop out of the bearing.
The object of my invention is to improve upon the ordinary construction of the center bearing for the contiguous ends of the tuft yarn spools, and more particularly to provide a fixed rigid bearing portion, and a movable or pivotally mounted bearingportion, said movable bearing portion provided with a pivotally mounted spring actuated locking. latchor lever, theactuating spring acting to hold said pivotally mounted lever Specification of Letters Patent.

in operative position, to lock the pivotally mounted bearing portion to the stationary bearing portion, no matter in what position the spool may be, all as will be hereinafteg fully described.
I have shown in the drawing a detached portion of a spool frame for a tuft yarn carrier, and a spool, with my improvements in center bearings combined therewith.

Fig, 4 shows a modified construction of some of the parts of the center bearing shown in Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is an edge view of the parts shown in Fig. 4, looking in the direction of arrow 0, same figure.

The other half of the bearing consists of the movable cap 9, which is pivotally attached at its lower end by a pin 9 to the stand 8, to have a pivotal or swinging motion thereon. The cap 9 has in this instance the ex 9 thereon, which extends over the upper end of thestaml'8, and also the extension 9" thereon, which in, this instance has an opening 9 therethrough, see Fig. 1, to receive the end of a latch 10, which is pivotally connected with the extension 9' by a pin 11. The latch 10 has the downwardly extending engaging end 10", which in this instance extends through an open end slot in the extension 9", and is made hook or beveled shaped at its lower end, to extend over the beveled end 8 on the upper part of the stand 8, see Fig. 2. The latch 10 has the extension 10", forming a handle per tion to be engaged by the operator.
A helically coiled expansion spring 12 extends between the handle portion 10 of the latch 10, and the upper part of the extension 9 on the cap 9, and acts to yieldingly hold the latch 10 in its closed position, as shown in Fig. 2. To disengage the latch 10, the engaging end 10 is pressed in- Wardly, against the action of the spring 12, to disengage the hooked end of the latch from the beveled end 8 on the stand 8, and then the cap 9 is moved outwardly, as indi cated by broken lines in Fig. 52, to allow of the free removal of the journals on the contiguous ends of the spools from the center bearing.
- In Figs. 4 and 5 is'shown a modified. construction of the movable cap 9. In said figure, the latch 10, pivoted on the cap 9, is done away with, and the latch lever 13 is substituted. The latch lever 13 is pivotally mounted at its lower end on a pin 14, on a lug 15 on the stand 8. A helically coiled ex pansion spring 16 extends between the lower end of the lever 13 and the edge of the stand 8, and acts to yieldingly more inwardly the 'lhe'uppcr end of the lever 13 extends in an open end slot on the upper end of the stand 8, and also in an open end slot on the extension 9 on the cap 9, and hasthe side extensions 13 thereon, which extend over the sides of the slotted part on the extension 9", shown in Fig. 5, when the lever 13 is in its inward position as shown in Fig. 4, to secure the cap 9 to the stationary part of the bearing. 4. Ina bearing for the contiguous journals on two spools, the combination with a stand having arecessed portion, of a movable cap, pivotally mounted on said stand, and having a recessed portion, and a pivotally mounted spring actuated lever or latch, for locking said movable cap to said stand.
5.
