GAGE FOR GAS-COCKS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 24;, 1913.
Application filed August 21, 1912 Serial No. 716,300.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN LAMPLE, a cit-izen of the United States, residing at. Baltimore, State of Maryland, have invented new and useful Improvements in Gages for Gas- Cocks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in gages for gas cocks, and it proposes a device which may be fitted upon the supply pipe of any gas stove or range and which may be set at various positions to co-act with the handle of the gas cook in giving a general indication of the rate at Which gas passes to the burner.
Various degrees of heat are required to cook various articles of food or to cook the same article of food in dilferent ways. Thus certain vegetables, meats, or food preparations have to be cooked slowly and with a moderate or low flame, others may require rapid cooking with a high flame. The gage which forms the subject of the present invention may be readily set to indicate various positions of the gas cook for securing flames of different intensity, in accordance with the character of the food or the mode of preparation thereof.
The improved gage is simple, inexpensive and inconspicuous, and may be readily fitted and adjusted.
An embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein:
Figure 1 18 an elevation of a gas range having a gage applied thereto; Fig. 2 is a plan view showing the relation of the gage and the handle of the gas cock; Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the gage per 86.
Similar characters of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views.
The drawings show a range which has th usual arrangement of transverse feed pipe A, burner branches B, and gas cocks in said branches and provided with the handles 0. These parts in most cases are so related that in practically all positions of a gas cock wherein gas is passing to the burner, the handle projects above and across the pipe A, and the greater the angle formed by the handle and the branch B, the less is the flow of gas through said branch. These characteristics of arrangement are utilized by the present invention, which comprehends a gage D, slidably adjustable on the pipe A to any desired position wherein, by its coincidence with the handle 0, an indication is given of the character or intensity of the flame. Thus, when the gage D is positioned nearer to a branch B and the handle 0 is positioned to coincide with said gage, a wider opening of the gas passage and a flame of greater intensity is secured. Conversely, when the gage D is positioned farther from a branch B and the handle C is positioned to coincide with said gage, a narrower opening of the gas passage and a flame of less intensity is secured.
The gage D may be satisfactorily and economically made in the form shown in the drawings, wherein it is fashioned from a strip of sheet metal which is bent to provide a split sleeve 1, having parallel terminal extensions 2. The sleeve 1 fits snugly upon the pipe A and may be secured thereon by a bolt 3 which passes loosely through openings in the extensions 2 and has a nut 4 on the end thereof.
To, facilitate the-proper positioning of the handle with reference to the gage D, the sleeve 1 of the latter may carry at an intermediate point an upstanding projection S. This projection does not engage in any way with the handle C and, consequently, does not interfere with the turning of the valve to full open or closed position; but it is provided in order to engage the thumb or finger when the handle is being turned and, by virtue of such engagement, to indicate when the position of the handle coincides with the position of the gage.
If desired, the pipe A may be provided with a scale E or otherwise suitably marked to facilitate the positioning of the gage.
WVhere a gas range has several burners, e. 9'. six or eight as is ordinarily the case, the gages may be supplied for all the burners, or for a certain number of them. Where several gages are thus employed, they may be set at different posit-ions and allowed to remain without further adjustment; in this way, one burner will always serve for slow cooking, another for rapid cooking or boiling, and the others for moderate cooking.
Changes in the form of the device may be made within the purview of the invention and within the scope of the appended claim, as is obvious.
Having fully described my invention, I claim:
The combination with a gas range having a feed pipe, a branch therefrom and a gas I said pipe with an upstanding projection,
cock in said branch and having a handle arranged to project across the feed pipe in any open position of the gas cock of a gage adapted to be fitted on the feed pipe to indicate by its coincidence with said handle some determined open position of said gas cook and comprising a strip of sheet metal fashioned to provide a split sleeve which fits snugly on said feed pipe and which is provided at a point adjacent the upper side of over Which the handle is freely movable, as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set 15 my hand in presence of tWo subscribing Witnesses.
JOHN LAMPLE.
