CURTIS WRIGHT, 3B,, OF OAKLAND, CALIFORNIA.
BED CONSTRUCTION.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CUR'rIs WVRIGHT, J11, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oakland, in the county of Alameda and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Bed Construction, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in bed construction, and particularly to tiltable bed structures.
It is an object of the present invention to provide a bed construction of novel and peculiar design, especially with the function of eliminating as much as possible labor in manufacturing and assembling the device, and to reduce the cost of the structure by the avoidance of the use of bolts or other extraneous fastening devices to thegreatest possible extent.
The invention consists in a tiltable frame with relatively stationary brackets, and means for connecting the frame, bracket and counterpoise mechanism.
It also comprises details of construction which will be more fully explained by ref erence to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation in partial section of the bed structure. Fig. 2 is a plan view of a portion of the bed and a bracket. Fig. 3 is a perspective detail of one of the levers.
In its illustrated embodiment, my invention comprises a bed frame 2, of suitable form and type, adapted to be adjusted in a vertical or horizontal position relative to brackets 3 which are provided with fulcrums 4; there being one of the brackets at each side of the head of the bed upon which the bed frame 2 rests and is turnable.
A popular type of bed includes a counterpoising device, illustrated generally at 5, which is connected at one end to the bracket structure 3, and at the lower end to a lever arm 6, to which the present invention particularly relates. In this instance the lever arms 6, one at each side of the head of the bed, are provided with sockets 7 on one side adapted to journal upon projections 8, one on each bracket 3; the lever arm 6 standing substantially parallel to the side of the bed frame 2 and a bracket 3. One end of the lever arm is provided with a substantially rectangular seat portion 9 adapted to em- Specification of Letters Patent.

brace the lower edge of one of the side rails of the bed frame 2. By this type or design of lever arm 6, I am enabled to avoid the use of any screws, bolts or other extraneous fastening devices and yet obtain a thoroughly reliable, practicable and eflicient connection between the counterpoising device 5 and the bed frame 2, to which the pressure of the counterpoise is transmitted through the lever arm 6 which is fulcrumed upon the pin or stud 8 of the bracket 3.
In assembling the device with the bed, the socket portion 7 is slipped over the journal pin 8 and the seat portion 9 swung upwardly to engage the side rail of the bed frame 2. Then the counter-poising device or connection 5 may be appropriately mounted on the adjacent end of the lever 6.
The form of mounting which will avoid the use of connecting bolts is preferred where the counterpoise 5 joins the lever arm 6, and the latter may be provided with integral studs 10, over which may straddle an interlocking yoke or yokes 11 at the lower portion of the counterpoise 5.
The counterpoise is composed of a spring 12 and a guide 13, the pressure of which spring exerted downwardly on the lever arm 6 tends to lift the bed frame 2 by forcing the seat portion 9 of the lever upward against the bed frame. Hence the pressure of spring 12 of the counterpoise is effectiveat all times to maintain the seat 9 of the levers in firm engagement with the adjacent portions of the bed frame 2, while the levers rock simultaneously with it about the alined pivotal studs &8.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is- 1. The combination in a bed structure, of supporting journals, a tiltable bed frame mounted upon said journals, means for counterpoising the bed frame, and connections between said means and the frame comprising levers with ends coupled to the counterpoising means and having seats engageable with the bed frame, said levers being pivoted upon said journals and maintained in engagement with the bed frame by the pressure of the counterpoising means.
2. A bed structure comprising substantie-n upon the fulerulns, levers having sent-s In testimony whereof I have hereunto for embraclng the slde rzuls of the bed set my hand 1n the presence of two subscr1b frame, Sitltl levers belng mounted upon the mg Wninesses.
