Description

R. P. CRAWFORD. BURGLAR ALARM. APPLIOATION FILED MAR.5,1918,
Patented June 24, 1913 W65: I L ifiwenton: W W
UNITED STATES; iiignnir OFFICE.
ROBERT P. CRAWFORD, OF ALLEGHENY,v PENNSYLVANIA.
BUBGLABFAL RMQ T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, ROBERT P. CRAwroRo,
-a citizen ofthe United States, resident of i illeg'heny, in the'co-unty of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have made a certain new and useful Invention in Burglar- Alarms; and I declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, sifch as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the invention,"reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters or figures of reference marked thereon, which form a par-hot this specification.
The invention has relation to burglar alarms, and it consists in the novel construction and combinations of parts, as hereinafter set forth. 7 i
In the accompanying drawings, illustrat ing the invention, the numerals 1 and 2 designate the upper and lower sashes of a window, to which the invention is shown as applied, 3 designates a plate attached to the window frame preferably by screws 4, 4. Secured to this plate preferably by screws 5,, 5, is a box (5, open at its top 7. Above said box and separated therefrom by an interval, a block .8 is secured to said plate, preferably by screws 9, 9, said block having a longitudinal recess 10, open at its lower end at 11, and terminating at its upper end in a shoulder 12.. Above said recess the upper port-ion of said block is provided with a longitudinal slot 13, open at its upper end at 14 and'open atits outer side at -15, said slot being separated from said recess by an intermediate portion 16 of the block, hav
ing a longitudinal aperture 17 wherein works a longitudinally slidable plunger 18, said plunger also working in said recess and in said slot. Thisplunger is provided at its lower end with a head 19, located and working in the recess 10, and surrounding the plunger between the head thereof and said shoulder is a coiled spring 20. A cartridge carrying block 21, 'is hinged at 22, in the interval between said box and said block, the hinged block. having a longitudinal aperture designed to receive a blank cartridge 24-, which is'centered or alined with respect to said plunger. lVhen the cartridge is placed in position in said block, or when thddisclitirgcd cartridge i to be removed andrepleped by'a new one, the block is turned upon its hinge to one side, as shown in dotted lines, fig, 3, out'of line with the Speolfictimi of Let at Patented June 24, 1913.
Application filed March -5, 1913. Serial No. 752,221.
- box 6 and block 8. The cartridge being inserted in position, the hinged block is turned back to normal position with its lower surface in supporting engagement with the upper portion of the box 6, thuspreventing sagging of the block upon its hin e and bracing it against the discharge of t 0 cartridge. i
In setting the alarm, the plungeris raised against the tension of its spring, b means of the handle projection .25, whic works in the slot 13 and projects without the open side thereof, and in order to retain the plunger temporarily in raised position a hinged latch 26, pivoted intermediately of its length at 27, to the block 8 and located'in the slot 13 thereof, is engaged at the lower outturned end 27 of one arm'thereof with the upper shoulder 28 of a notch 29 of said Y plunger, the upper inturned end 30 of the other arm of said latch being engagedwith a longitudinal slot 31' ofone arm of a lever 31, fulcrumed intermediately of its length at 32 to one of the window sashes, the other arm of said lever having a hook end 33 with ,wliich a lateral pin 34 of the other window sash has engagement. In this way upon movement of either sash to open the window at top or bottom, the lever 31 will be swung upon its fulcrum 32 or upon the pin 34 as a center, depending upon which sash is moved, to turn the latch upon its hinge and release the latch from the plunger, which will at once fall, under the influence of its spring, and set off the cartridge, the discharge of which is received in the box 6. WVhen the plunger is raised tlie latch has automatic engagement therewith through the medium of the spring 26.
The handle projection 25 is. designed,
upon the fall-thereof with the plunger, to make the electrical connection between two contacts, 35, 35, and complete the cirouitbf which an electrical bell 36 forms a part, said bell being rung at the same time that the cartridge is discharged.
Having thus described my in vention,what- I claim as new and desire to'secure by Let' tcrs Patent is:
1. In a burglar alarm, the combination of a carrier, at plunger working therein pro vided with a shoulder, a latch device havingengagement with said shoulder to temporarily retain the olunger in raised position, a lover adapted or connection with one of the window sashes having operative engagement with said latch, and means adapted for connection with the other Window sash having operative engagement with said lever.
2. In a burglar alarm, the combination of a carrier, a plunger working therein provided with a shoulder, a pivoted latch having engagement with said shoulder, 'a lever having a fulcrum intermediately of its length adapted for connect-ion with one of the Window sashes and having operative engagement with said latch, and means adapted for connection with the other window sash having operative engagement with said lever. v
3. In a burglar alarm, the combination of a carrier, a plum er working therein provided with a shou der, a pivoted latch having an outturned end engaging said shoulder, a lever having a fulcrum intermediately of its length adapted for connection with one of the window sashes and provided with a slotted end portion having operative engagement with said latch, and a pin adapted for connection with the other window sash havingoperative engagement with said lever.
4. In a burglar alarm, the combination of a carrier, a plunger workin therein provided with a shoulder .and a andle projection, a latch device havin engagement with said shoulder, a lever a apted for connection with one of the window sashes having operative engagement'with said latch, means adapted for connection with the other window sash having operative engagement with said lever, a cartridge-carrying block in line with said plunger, and electrical contacts having engagement with said handle projection, and means in connection therewith for ringing an alarm.
5. In a burglar alarm, the combination of a carrier having at its'lower end an opentop box, a plunger-carrying block having a lower longitudinal recess, an upper longitudinal slot open at one side, and an intermediate portion provided with an aperture, a plunger working in said aperture, in said recess and in said slot and having a shoulder and a lower head working in said recess, a coiled spring surrounding said plunger and located between said head and the upper wall of said recess, said plunger Having a handle projection extending through the open side of said slot, a hinged cartridge carrying block between said box and the plunger-carrying block, a latch havin engagement with said shoulder, a lever at apted for connection with one of the window sashes having operative engagement with said latch, and means adapted for connection with the other window sash having operative engagement with said lever.
In testimony whereof I ailix my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
ALBERT HUDSON, JOSEPH ASHTON.
