Be it known that we, FREDERICK C; "COOK and 'GYRUS B. MCCROSKEY, citizens of the United States,.residing, respectively, in the cityof Portland, county of Multnomah, and State of Oregon, and thecity of San Francisco, county of San Francisco, and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Metal Store-Fronts, of which the, following is a specification.
Our invent-ion relatesftom'etalstore fronts, and more particularly to certain improved details of construction whereby we are able to'eliminate screw heads and the like from the face platesthereof, and thereby also eliminate certain objectionable features caused thereby. It is well known "that the screw heads, even though countersunk and made flush with the surface of the face plate, afford lodging places for dirt, polishing owder and the like. Rates in the grooves of the screw-heads and also around the edges thereof and makes it difficult to properly polish the face plates at these places. Then too, these screws frequently have projecting edges or corners which catch the rags or other material used for cleanin and polishing the front, and therefore. give cause forfurther objections. In order to overcome these and other objections, and to entirely eliminate exposed screw heads and thereby present a continu ous and uninterrupted surface which can be highly polished and made very attractive, we have conceived the improvements now to be described, and in order that others may fully understand our invention, we have shown in the accompanying sheet of draw ings one practical embodiment thereof.
In the drawings,Figure 1 is a perspective View of a portion of a store front, showing a face plate secured in place with our improvedmeans; Fig. 2 is a cross sectional view thereof, taken on line 2-2, of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 shows a front View of an attaching or locking block, adapted to be inserted into the face plate or metal molding at a point opposite or in register with the usual vent opening in the edge thereof; and Fig. 4 is a top plan view of the same detail.
eferring now to the drawings, we have shown a portion of arglass front 1, in place, resting on suitable setting blocks of wood, as 2 at its ends, in the metal gutter 3, which bears against the glass from the inside, as

This matter accumw,
cause for the objections hereinbefore referred to, we have'conceived the idea of an inner attaching 'or locking block 6, made to conform to the inside of the face plate 4,-and adapted to bear against the upper and lower lips 7 and 8 thereof, in the manner indicated. These holding blocks are preferably placed opposite or in register with the usual ventilating openings 5-5, through which the screws 9 can be inserted for screwin the holding blocks 6 to the frame work of the store front, substantially as illustrated. These ventilating openings can be utiliz d for this purpose without. in any way interfering with their regular function, and thus avoid making special openings through the edge of the face plate. These holding blocks are preferably formed or made of metal and adapted to bear inwardly against the upper lip 7 and downwardly against the lower lip 8, of said face plate, and thereby hold the latter firmly against the glass. They may be placed opposite the regular ventilating openings, one for each opening,

indicated. An outside molding or face plate or distributed as may be necessary to good workmanship. They should be made to fit snugly within the face plate so that'when in place they will not slip or be easily moved from their positions before the face plate is put into its proper place and there secured.
We have'thus eliminated exposed screw heads. from the surfaces of face plates and likefront moldings and their attendant obj ections and have provided even a more effective means for securing the face plates or moldings in place, and while we are aware that slight changes can be made in the embodiment here shown and described for purposes of illustration, we do not limit the in vention to this specific form, except as we may be limited by the hereto appended claims.
We claimi 1. In a store front of the character referred to, in combination therewith, a face plate or molding, a holdingblock therein, said face plate having an opening therethrough, and a screw inserted bodily through said opening for securing said ho1ding block and faceplate in csition.
2. In a store front of t e character referred to, in combination therewith, a face plate or molding, a holding block formed to fit therein and provided with a screw-receiving opening, said face plate or molding having an opening at said holding block, and a screw inserted through said opening into said holding block, for the purpose referred to.
In a store front of the character referred to, in combination therewith, a gutter plate or base, setting blocks mounted thereon, a glass resting upon said setting blocks, a face plate or molding resting against said glass and provided with openings therethrough, a holding block fitted within said face plate or molding at an opening therethrough and receiving a screw, and a screw inserted through said opening and in said face plate for securing said holding block and face plate in operating position.
insane? 4;. In a store front of the character referred to, in combination with the gutter, glass and setting blocks therefor, of a face plate or molding bearing against said glass and provided with ventilating openings, one or more holding blocks fitted into said face plate or molding opposite said ventilating openings and having a holding engagement with said face plate or molding, and a screw inserted bodily through said ventilating opening and into said holding block for se I curing it and said face plate to said store front, substantially as illustrated and described.
