Description

G. MARSHALL.
ELECTRODE CONTACT CLAMP.
APPLICATION FILED JAN. 8, 1913.
Patented June 24, 1913.
W n Wn electrode. Even with eleclrmles of large size, c. 9.. twenty-four inches in diameter, th s operation can be very rapidly eii'ected,
s'othat in cases Where a number of electrodes are used, even though. one electrodeis inomay be handled, but also in that it enables the operator to adjust the clamps irom a point removed "from the furnace, so that he is not subjected to the heat and fumes thereof, the clamps in order to avoid waste of electric power in the electrodes themselves, being preferably located close as possible to the furnace charge.
The mechanical details of the device as a whole, and particularly of the motor and its control, have not been illustrated in detail, as these are features within the knowledge and experience of those skilled in the art.
The clamping device may be used simply as a means for conveying current to an electrode which is separately supported, or may be itself used as both a suspending and contact-making device I claim:
1. .lin an electric furnace, the coi'nbination With an electrode, of a contact clamp, elec trical connections to sai-i' clamp, a poweractuated device for operating said clamp,
noeaseo and means, located at a distance from the furnace, for controlling said power-actuated device.
2. In an electric furnace, the combination with an electrode, of a contact clamp, electrical connections to said clamp, and a fluidpressure-actuated device for causing said clamp to engage with and disengage from said electrode.
3. In an electric furnace, the combination with an electrode, of a contact clampingdevice, means for connecting said clampingdevice to a source of current, and means comprising power-actuated clamp-operating devices for changing the position oi the clamping-device Without stopping -the operation of the furnace.
4. In an electric furnace, the combination with anelectrode, of a contact clamp and electrical mnnections thereto, said clamp comprising jaws adapted to engage the electrode, a motor connected to one of the jaws, and means for operating said motor.
In an electric furnace, the combination with an elect-rode, of a contact clamp comprising a supporting men'iber, a frame having one end shaped to engage one portion of the electrode, jaw shaped to fit another portion of the electrode, a motor carried by said frame and connected to said jaw, and means for supporting the frame and jaw from the supporting member.
In testimony whereof I ailii; my signature in presence of two Witnesses,
