This invention relates to apparatus for producing an electric arc suitable for welding, fusing or otherwise heating materials.
One important object of the invention is to improve the general construction of devices of this character.
A second important object of the invention is to provide a device of this character having parallel electrodes arranged to produce a flaming are at their free ends.
A third important object of the invention is to provide an improved electrode holder or support for devices of this character wherein the electrodes may be removably secured.
With the above and other objects in view as will be hereinafter apparent, the invention consists in general of certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing and specifically claimed.
In the accompanying drawing like characters of reference indicate like parts in the several views, and:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a device constructed in accordance with this invention.
Figure 2 is a detail perspective view showing certain parts of the holder, the view being drawn to a larger scale than that employed in Figure 1.
In the embodiment of the invention as herein illustrated there is provided a support consisting of a pair of members or bars A and B. These members are preferably square prisms of metal and are arranged side by side in parallelism. An insulating strip s is interposed between the two prisms to hold them from electrical contact with each other. Adjacentthe center of each member is a pair of spaced bolt holes having linings s of insulating material and the holes of one member are aligned with the holes of the other. Likewise the insulating strip s is provided with bolt holes registering with the holes in the bars A and B. Through these bolt holes pass bolts 2) provided in the usual manner with heads and nuts and beneath said heads and nuts are arranged insulating washers s". By this means the bars A and B and the strip s are securely assembled.
In order to afford means for manipulating the device there is provided an angle bracket or support C one arm of which carries ahandle C. The other arm of this bracket extends beneath the bars at one end thereof and is insulated from said bars' by an insulating strip s Each of the bars A and B is provided with a bolt hole having an insulating liner s and bolts 0. pass through these liners s and through corresponding holes (not shown) in the strip s and bracket C. Washers s are arranged beneath the heads of these bolts.
Sockets e are formed in the bracket supported ends of the bars A and B and in these sockets are fitted the terminals g of a pair of insulated wires G receiving current from any suitable source. Set screws d pass laterally into the terminals g in position in their sockets. At the opposite ends of the bars A and B are provided electrode sockets f which are located close to the strip s.v In the sockets f are removably mounted the electrodes E and F of the type commonly used for the production of welding arcs. These electrodes are removably secured in their sockets by set screws 0.
Secured to the bracket C is a crossbar constituting a pair of legs t by which the device may be supported on a table or work bench to have the, electrodes extend in vertical position. Also the handle C is preferably of insulating material and is provided with a bore C through which the wires G may pass as shown in Figure 1.
In using the device when current is supplied an arc will be established at the free ends of the electrodes E and F and, under proper current conditions and with the use of proper electrodes, this arc will be of the type known as a flaming arc. Such an arc may, as is well known, produce heat for various purposes such as for fusing, welding and heating objects. As is also well known an arc of this kind is exceedingly rich in ultra-violet rays and the device may likewise be used for the production of such rays.
There has thus been provided a simple and eiiicient device of the kind described and for the purpose specified.
It is obvious that minor changes may be made in the form and construction of the invention without departing from the material spirit thereof. It is not; therefore, desired to confine the invention to the exact form shown herein and described herein, but it is desired to include all such as properly come within the scope claimed.
I claim:
1. In a device of the kind described, an electrode holder consisting of a pair of conductor bars, an insulating strip positioned between said bars, means to secure said bars and strip in position and in insulated relation, terminal sockets for feed wires in said bars at one end of the device, set screws extending laterally of said bars into said sockets, sockets for electrodes at the remaining ends of said bars, other set screws extending laterally oi the bars into the last mentioned sockets, an angle bracket having one arm extending beneath said bars at the ends having the terminal sockets, an insulating strip disposed between said arm and the bars, insulated bolts passing through said bars and arm and securing them together, the remaining arm of said bracket extending at right angles to said bars, and an insulating handle on the last mentioned arm. r
2. In a device of the kind described, an electrode holder consisting of a pair of conductor bars, an insulating strip positioned between said;
