UNITED STATES PATENT UFFICE.
BENJAMIN GOLDENBERG, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
LEG AND ARM FOR DOLLS.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN GOLDEN- BERG, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Legs and Arms for Dolls, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a device of this character in which a kneejoint or other joint is formed in a dolls leg or arm composed of cloth and stufling such as excelsior, or hair, or any other suitable stuffing material, so that by virtue of my invention a good and satisfactory joint may be formed which permits movements that simulate the movements of a natural limb. This object is accomplished by my improvement, one embodiment of which is hereinafter set forth, and more fully described in the accompanying claims.
Reference is now had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of a dolls leg embodying my improvement; Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken on a line 22 of Fig. 1, looking in the direction of the'arrows; Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a cap which is used in the construction.
Throughout the various views of the drawings, similar reference characters designate similar parts.
My improved leg 1 is composed of a thigh 2, united to the lower part of the leg 3 by my improved joint it. This joint t is composed in part of a cap 5 which may be called a knee cap, which is inserted with its fiat surface uppermost, in the lower end of the cloth 6 of the thigh 2. On top of this is placed the stufiing, so that the cap 5 is held firmly. It will be noted that the cap 5 is composed of a fiat portion surrounded Specification of Letters Patent. 7

Serial No. 728,598.
on all sides but one with a flange, the entire cap being shaped substantially as shown in Fig. 3. The lower part of the leg, that is the part 3, is made and stuffed and given a curved outline at its upper end, so that when the leg 1 is straight and the parts are together, the upper end of the part 3 fits the cloth which is stretched on the interior of the cap 5 at the rear of the leg, and when the leg 1 is flexed as shown in Fig. 1, the upper end of the part 3 will fit snugly against the lower end of the cap 5. In all positions the parts 2 and 3 of the leg 1 occupy while the leg is either straight or flexed, the same closeness of joint holds good. The pivot is formed by suitable means as by a wire 7 passing through suitable heads 8, or in any other suitable manner.
The leg thus described may be used on any kind of doll with legs composed of cloth or similar material and a stuffing.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is:
1. In a device of the class described, a thigh 2 with a cap 5 with a flat portion and a flange on three sides only of said fiat portion placed therein andj a [lower part 3 of the leg pivotally mounted in said cap.
2. In a device of the class described, a thigh 2 composed of a cloth 6, a cap 5 with a flat portion and a flange on three sides only of said flat portion and a stufling over the cap and in the cloth and a lower part of the leg pivotally mounted in said cap.
In witness whereof, I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two Witnesses:
BENJAMIN GOLDENBERG.
In the presence of Gnsravn I. ARoNow, JACOB LASKER.
