SCREEN.
innesca.
To all 'whom t may concern Be it known that we, JOsnPi-r Dyna and GEORGE H. LnoNanD, citizens of the United States, residing at Fairfield, in the county of Somerset and State of Maine, have invented new and useful Improvements in Screens, of which the following is a specication.
The invention relates to window screens and has for an object to provide a removable screen for use on window casings and the like.
The invention embodies, among other features, a frame having the usual screen wire secured thereto and arranged to slide on the usual strips of a window casing, springlilte means being employed for retaining the frame on the casing to prevent rattling thereof, with means for locking the f rame on the easing without disturbing the sliding movement of the frame, the said frame being readily removable from engagement with the casing and as easily engaged therewith.
In the further disclosure of the invention reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, constituting a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference denote corresponding parts in all the views, and in which- Figure 1 is a front elevation of a window casing showing our-device applied thereto; Fig. 2 is a rear elevation of a window casing showing our device applied thereto; Fig. 3 is a horizontal sect-ional view taken on the line 3-3 in Fig. 1; and Fig. 4; is a fragmentary perspective view of the frame.
Referring more particularly to the views, we disclose a window casing lO-having the usual vertical strips 11 thereon for retaining the ordinary window sashesin sliding engagement with the window casing;
A rectangular screen frame 12 is provided with the usual screen wire 13 mounted on the frame and the said frame has a guide plate 14: projecting beyond one side of the same to extend across the front face of one of the strips 11, the mentioned guide plate being arranged to lie in a plane with the face of the frame 12 so that when the frame is mounted on the window casing 10 the same will be interposed between the strips 11 as shown. In order to prevent any rattling of the frame 12 when the same is mounted on the window casing and to aid in sliding the frame vertically on the strips 11 Specification of Letters Patent.

of the window casing, a leaf spring 15 has an end thereof rigidly secured to the frame 12 by a pin 16, the free end of the said spring being provided with a longitudinally extending slot 17 through which extends a pin 18 secured to the frame 12, with the free or slotted end of the spring 15 slidable on the frame 12, the medial portion of the spring being normally spaced from the frame and engaging a side of the strip 11 having the guide plate 14; projecting thereover. A guide lug 19 projects laterally from the spring 15 across the inner side of the strip 11, engaged by the spring 15, thus retaining one side of the'frame inslidable engagement with the mentioned strip so that the frame can be slid vertically on the window casing.
In order to ret-ain the other side of the frame in v slidable engagement vwith the window casing, a slotted locking member 20, provided with a handle 21, is mounted to slide on the inner side of the frame 12 with an end 22 of the locking member projecting across the other strip 11 of the window casing, pins 23 being passed through the slots of the locking member 2O in order to retain the same in engagement with the frame 12 and also permit a sliding movement of the locking member, a leaf spring 24, provided with slots 25 in the ends thereof, being mounted on the frame 12 with pins 26 passing through the slots 25 and t-he medial portion of the spring 24: engagingv the locking member' 20 to normally retain the same in locked position. when the frame 12 is mounted on the window casing 10, the guide lug 19 together with the guide plate 14, will retain one side of the frame in slidable engagement with one of the strips of the window casing and the end 22 of the locking member 20 will retain the other side of the frame 12 in slidable engagement with the other strip of the window casing, the locking member 20 being also adapted to prevent the accidental removal of the frame 12 from slidable engagement with the strips 11 of the window casing 10, while at the same time the frame can be readily moved vertically on the window casing, and the leaf spring 15, engaging a face of one of the strips 11, will hold a face of the frame 12 against the face of the other strip, thus preventing any rattling of the frame on he window casing. In order to further se- It will now be seen thatl cure the frame l2 on the window casing in the manner mentioned, an auxiliary leaf spring Q7 is rigidly secured to the frame l by the same pin 1G that connects the leaf spring l5 to the frame, the mentioned leaf spring Q7 being' adapted to project upwardly and provided at the upper end thereof with a laterally extending portion 2S projecting over the upper face or edge of the frame l2 when the frame is in position on the window casing, the leaf spring 27 at the point of formation of the laterally extending portion 28 being adapted to be normally spaced from the frame 12 and abut against one of the strips 1l, thus exerting sui'licient pressure on the upper end of the frame so that the side of the frame upon which the locking member 2O is mounted will be held against a face of one of the strips to prevent any undue displacement of the frame 10 on the window casing. rl`he usual handle 29 is mounted on the frame l2 in order to facilitate the operation of sliding the frame on the window casing and from the foregoing description it will be seen that by simply sliding the locking member Q0 against the action of the spring 24, the portion of the frame having the locking member thereon can be moved outwardly from engagement with one of the strips ll and the opposite side or portion of the frame can then be moved away from the window casing, thus removing the leaf spring l5 and guide lug 19 from engagement with the other strip 1l and resulting in the entire removal of the screen from the window easing, while at the same time, when the frame is moved on the window casing, the springs l5, 27, together with the guide lug 19 and locking member 20, will retain the frame l2 in slidable engagement with the window casing so that the frame can be readily moved upwardly or downwardly on the strip 1l thereof, the guide plate 11i beingy provided to prevent the removal of the side of the frame l2 opposite to the side of the frame having the locking member 20 thereon.
Having thus described our invention, we claim:
