STROPPINGr-MAGHINE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 17, 1913.
Application filed June 25, 1912. Serial No. 705,850.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, GEORGE J. HELY, a subject of the Czar of Russia, residing at Seattle, in the county of King and State of \Vashington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stropping-Machines, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a sectional view through the stropper with the strip in place. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the stropper with the strip removed. Fig. 3 is an end elevation of the stropper showing the means for turning the razor holder when the stropper is in use. Fig. i is an end elevation looking at an opposite end from that shown in Fig. 3.
Referring to the accompanying drawings it will be seen that this invention comprises the end plates 10 and 11 which are connected at their lower ends by the rigid bar 1 1 rigidly connected with the end plates in any suitable manner. The end plate 10 is provided with a longitudinally extending slot 26 which permits a razor to be passed through the end plate and into a clamp which is to be hereinafter described. When this razor is passed through the slot it is engaged by the clamp and is held in the position shown in Fig. 2.
A flat clamp carrying bar 20 is positioned between the upper end portions of the end plates 10 and 11 and has its end portions 21 rounded as shown and passing through openings formed in the end plates, thus rotatably mounting the bar. The clamp 24: extends longitudinally beneath the bar 20 and is held in place by the rivets 25. From an inspection of Fig. 4t it will be seen that the clamp is positioned in alinement with the upper portion of the slot 26, thereby permitting the razor blade 29 to be easily passed through the slot and into the clamp.
A rocker shaft 15 extends between the end plates 10 and 11 beneath the bar 20 with its end portions passing through openings formed in the end plates, which openings form pockets 16 to receive bearing balls 17. A head 18 is provided at one end of the shaft 15 and a tapered finger 19 is secured at the opposite end of the shaft with its free end extending between the curved arms 23 extending from a disk 22 rigidly mount- The upper and lower guiding rollers 12 I and 13 are rotatably mounted between the end plates with their ends fitting into openings or pockets in the end plates and guide the fabric strip 28 through the stropping device so that the inner flights of the strip will always travel away from the cutting edge of the razor blade. It should be noted that when this strip is drawn in one direc tion it rotates the shaft 15, thus swinging the finger 19 to rock the bar to the proper position to bring the razor blade into engagement with that portion of the strip which is traveling away from its cutting edge. Rings 27 are carried adjacent the upper ends of the plates 10 and 11, thus permitting the stropping device to be suspended from a suitable support. Then this stropping device is in use the upper end portions of the plates are drawn toward each other due to the strain placed upon the rings, thus preventing the plates from being spread apart.
From the above description the operation of this device will be readily understood, it being evident that the razor blade is passed through the slot 26 into the clamp 2a where it will be held in engagement with one of the inner flights of the stropping strip 28. The outer end portions of the strip are grasped and the strip drawn through the stropping device, thus passing across the cutting edge of the razor blade and stropping the same. hen the strip is moved in the opposite direction the finger 19 swings and rocks the bar, thus bringing the razor blade into engagement with the strip which is traveling away from its cutting edge.
Having thus described the invention, What is claimed as new, is
A razor stropping device comprising end plates, one of said plates being provided with a longitudinally extending slot, a bar extending between the lower end portions of said plates and rigidly connected therewith, an oscillating bar mounted between the upper end portions of said plate, a depending razor clamp carried by said oscillating bar and ositioned in alinement with said slot, a dis rigidly mounted upon one end of said. oscillating bar and having arms extending 2 1,065 2&7
may be passed around said shaft and up to and around the upper guiding rollers and carried downwardly between said lower rollers'and inner flights of said strip.
In testimony whereof I hereunto atlix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE J. HELY.
