Description
UNITED STATES PATENT @FFTQE.
ALBERT L. SHEFFIELD, OF MOBILE, ALABAMA.
WINDOW-SHADE HOLDER.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ALBERT L. SHEFFIELD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mobile, in the county of Mobile and State of Alabama, have invented new and useful Improvements in lVindowShade Holders, of which the following is a specification.
The general object of the invention is to provide means adapted for bodily adjusting a window shade so as to admit light through any desired portion of the window, said means being further adapted to turn the window shade to one side of the window, whereby, to obviate the relatively difiicult operation of removing the shade from the window when it is desired to clean the same and its frame; and to this end the invention consists in certain improved constructions, arrangements, and combinations of devices, which will be fully described hereinafter, and then pointed out in the claim.
Other objects will appear and be better understood from that embodiment of my invention of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming a part hereof, in which;
Figure 1 is a front elevation of the device showing the same by full and dotted lines in two positions of adjustment. Fig. 2 is a plan of the shade holder. Fig. 3 is a view similar to Fig. 2 of the supporting arm.
The shade roller which is indicated generally by a, may be ofany preferred construction and has secured to it the shade Z). The trunnions or end pieces 55 at the opposite ends of the roller a are received by openings in the arms 66 which are arranged in angular relation to and formed integral with or otherwise suitably secured to the sections 77 of the shade holder 0. The collars 88 which are adapted for embracing the sections 7-7 of the shade holder, operate to prevent displacement of the over-lapping port-ions of the sections and permit of the said sections to slide therein, thereby rendering the shade holder 0 adjustable to the various widths of windows and the various lengths of shade rollers.
The combined flexible hanger and adjusting member 9 has one end so adapted for connect-ion to the sections 77 as to support the shade holder 0 horizontally. This element 9 passes over a sheave 10 carried by the free end portion of a swinging arm 11 which Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed February 16, 1912.
Patented June 17,1913. Serial No. 677,981.
is arranged above the upper sash of the Window so positioned as to have the sheave 10 in vertical alinement with the middle portion of the shade holder 0. The section 12 is adapted to be secured by suitable fastening means such as screws 13, to any suitable support such as the upper end of the window frame. The adjacent ends of the swinging arm 11 and the section 12 are adapted to interlock and be connected by any suitable means such as a pintle 11 which is in vertical alinement with the inner edge of one side of the window frame, or substantially so. From the sheave 10 the flexible element 9 passes over the spirally grooved jam wheel 15 mounted upon a shaft 17 carried by the swinging arm 11 and also through a guide 18 and thence to the lower portion of the window frame where it may be within easy reach of the operator when it is desired to adjust the shade.
One end of the shade roller 0 has suitable means such as an eye 19, for turning on a guide wire 20 which passes through the said eye 19 and connects at its opposite ends to screw eyes 2121 screwed into the sections 12 and lower end of one side portion of the window frame at.
When the shade is over the lower sash and the free end portion of the element 9 pulled vertically downward, the shade may be raised to any desired portion of the window frame and secured in its adjusted position by relaxing the element 9 sufficiently and holding the free end portion of the said element at an angle to the frame-,so as to enable it to follow the spiral of the jam wheel, whereupon the latter will operate to secure the element by squeezing it against the swinging arm 11. By pulling on one side of the shade or the shade holder the latter will turn on the guide wire 20 and the swinging arm will move outwardly to arrange the parts as shown by dotted lines in Fig. 1. When the parts are so positioned the window may be readily cleaned without interference from the shade or its supports.
What I claim as new is: k
A shade holder comprising a section adapted to be applied to a window frame, an arm hinged to the section, sheaves journaled upon the arm, a flexible member trained over the sheaves, a bracket connected to the flexible member and having at one corner an eye, a shade roller journaled in the H. SMETHURST. DUST REMOVER FOR GARDING MACHINES. APPLICATION FILED M0. 27, 1910. RENEWED MAY 5, 191a.
