Description

L. S. KINNARD'. ARTIGLB OP WEARING APPAREL.

UNITED PATENT OFFIGE,
LUELLA STILWELL KINNARD, OF ANDERSON, INDIANA.
ARTICLE OF WEARING-APPAREL.
parel and more particularly to articles of this character made from knitted or crocheted fabric.
An object of the invention is to provide an article of the above character which is so constructed that a'pliable wire or some suitable equivalentmay be located entirely within and concealed by the enchained loops forming the knitted or crocheted article, whereby said article may be bent or shaped as desired, and retain said shape.
In the drawings, which show by way of illustration one embodiment of the invention, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a head covering embodying my improvements; Fig. 2 is an enlarged section showing three adjacent knitted chains joined-together, each of which encircles and conceals a pliable wire core; Fig. 3 is a section through the head covering transversely of the knitted chains.
The invention consists broadly in the forming of an article by the enchaining of loops of thread or yarn or other suitable material, and the laying of these enchained loops spirally and joining adjacent rows as they are formed. In orderv that the article thus formed may be shaped as desired and held in such position, I have formed each knitted or crocheted chain or row of loops around a pliable wire which will be concealed by the loops of yarn or thread, and at the same time retain the article --in the shape in which it may be bent.
Referring more in detail to'the drawings, my invention consists of a head covering 1, which, as herein shown, is in the shape of a hat having a rim 2. "The body portion of the head covering, which includes the rim, is formed by a spirallv laid knitted chain 3. Each chain is 1. bly formed by in- Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 17. 1913.
Application filed December 27, 1912. Serial No. 738,887.
It will be obvious from certain aspects of the invention that the enchained loops in one row may be otherwise joined to the next adjacent row.
. lVhile I have referred to the chain of loops as a knitted or crocheted chain, it will be understood that I do not limit myself to any particular way of interlooping or interlocking the loops. The interlocked loops are formed about a pliable wire, which extends entirely throughout the head covering from the outer edge of the rim to the crown of the head covering. The loops forming the chain completely cover and conceal the wire core running therethrough, and, therefore, in the finished head covering the pliable wire looping of loops of yarn or thread, and-v simultaneously with the forming of each knitted chain the wire is placed centrally of the chain'so that when the head covering iscompleted the pliable wire is placed and the head covering finished so far as the construction and insertion of the forming or shaping member is concerned. The ends of the wire may be bent or curled in any desired way to hold the same roperly positioned relative to the ends'oi the chain of loops.
While I have described my invention specifically as embodied in a head coverin it will be understood from the statement 0 the invention and the claims and the general de'scriptionof my device, that the invention relates to all articles of wearing apparel which may be formed by a knitted or crocheted chain, and made as above noted, and formed around a pliable wire.
It is obvious that minor changes in the detail of construction and the arrangement in the appended claims.
'I'lavingthus described my invention, what.
I claim is: t
1. An article of wearing apparel c0mprising a body portion formed by a spirally laid knitted or crocheted chain, adjacent rows interlooping with one another, and a. liable core locatedwithin and concealed y the loops of said spiral chain arid extending substantially throughout the entire length thereof, whereby said body portion when bent or shaped as desired-will be retained in said shaped position by said pliable core.
, 2. An article of wearing apparel'comprising a body portion formed by a spirally laid knitted or crocheted chain, adjacent rows interlooping with one another, and a continuous pliable wire core located within a'ndconthe loops of said spiral chain and substantially throughout the enthereof, whereby said body porbent or shaped as desired will be said shaped position by said wire cealed by extending tire length tion when retained in core.
3., A hat comprising a crown portion and with one another, and a pliable core located a briin formed by a spirally laid knit-t ed or crochetedchain, adjacent lOWs interlooping within and concealed by the loops ofsaid spiral chain and extending substantially throughout'the entire length thereof, whereby said crown and said brim when bent or shaped as desired will be retained in said 35 shaped position by said pliable core.
4 A hat comprising a crown portion and a brim formed ,by' a spirally laidknitted or crocheted chain, adjacent rows interlooping with one another, and a pliable wire core located within'and concealed by the loops of said spiral chain and extending substantially throughout the entire length thereof, whereby said crown and said brini when bent'or shaped as desired will be retained in 45 said shaped position by said pliable wire core. 7
' In testimony whereof, I aiiix my signature, in the presence of two witnesses.
