T 0 all whom it may concern Be it known that- I, EDWIN F. HARDEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kansas City, in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined PaperWVeights and Pencil- Sharpeners, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to improvements in pencil sharpeners, and my object is to produce a simple, inexpensive, device of this character whereby lead pencils may be quickly and neatly pointed, and which may be employed to advantage as a paper-weight.

In order that the invention may be fully understood, reference will now be made to the accompanying drawing, in which:

In carrying out the invent-ion, I employ a rectangular receptacle 1, made, preferably, of cast metal to give it sufficient weight to answer as a paper-weight. Receptacle 1, is provided at its lower corners with legs 2, having cushions 3, to protect the furniture upon which the device is placed from being scratched or otherwise marred. Receptacle 1, also has a chamber 4, to catch the shavings from a pencil being sharpened, and a pencil rest 5, in its rear wall, which rest coacts with a notched supporting member 6, projecting inwardly from one of the side walls of the receptacle, in holding a pencil such as A, in position to be sharpened.

7 designates a carrier slidably-mounted upon a track consisting of an inclined rod 8, and the upper surface of the wall of the receptacle provided with the supporting member 6, said upper surface having the same inclination as the rod 8.

Carrier 7 is provided with a handle 9, and arms 10 and 11, the upper surfaces of which are inclined forwardly and downwardly and form a bed for a double-edged blade 12, whereby sharpening of the pencil is effected.

Arm 10, is swiveled on rod 8, so that the carrier 7, may be swung upward to allow the forward end of the pencil to be readily placed in the notch of the supporting memher 6. It also permits the carrier to be raised slightly at each backward stroke, so that the blade will not contact the pencil and thus become needlessly dulled.

Blade 12, may be adjusted forwardly or backwardly upon its bed to make it out faster or slower, and it may be adjusted longitudinally in either direction to present a sharp portion to the pencil when a used portion thereof becomes dulled, and when one of its edges becomes dulled said blade may be reversed to present its other edge to the pencil. The blade 12, is reliably held in any of its adjusted positions by a thumb screw 13, threaded into a lip 14, overhanging the arms 10, and 11, which are spaced apart to pass the supporting member 6.

The operation briefly stated is as follows: After a pencil has been placed in position in the rest 5, and the notched portion of the supporting member (3, the carrier is moved downward to bring the blade 12, into contact with the forward portion of the pencil from which a shaving is cut that falls into the chamber 4. On the backward stroke the carrier 7, is swung upward slightly on the rod 8, so that the blade 12, will not contact with the pencil, which latter is slightly turned to present a new surface to the blade on its next downward stroke. This opera tion is repeated until the pencil is pointed as desired. The strokes of the carrier 7, are limited by the front and rear walls of the receptacle 1, which walls project above the track traversed by the carrier, and the blade is protected from becoming dulled from striking against the front Wall by the arms 10 and 11, which project beyond said blade.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
