Description

JOHN AUSTIN BEST, OF AUGUSTA, GEORGIA.
FILING APPARATUS.
Specification of Letters Patent. v
Patented June 1'7, 31913.
Application filed July 27, 1912. Serial No. 711,914.
In my application referred to, the'specific improvement resides in cards apertured inorder that they may engage the card sup porting and holding rod or bar of an index box in a particular manner, although the broad object, as in the presentcase, involves the provision of index cards having meanswhereby to selectively. engage card holding means in such a manner that the cards may be arranged in a non-alined series wherein a portion of each card is exposed along certain of the edges-of the next adjacent card' in front thereof. This arrangement is such that facial portions of each'card are visible throughout the series, and enables thecar ds to be distinguishedafrom one another and selected in a short space of timeand without fingering over numbers thereof as in the usual indexing systems.
my present' invention resides in the provi:
s'ion of cards having means whereby they may beengaged with selected supporting and holding members of a series, whereby the cards may be arranged in a non-alined series'for the purpose before mentioned. 40 With this in mind my invention resides in the details shown in the accompanying drawing, forming part of this specification The specific improvement presented. by,
in this form I preferably introduceone or more sheet metal ribs B in order to support the lower edge of the letter folders, indicated at G, and prevent the weight of the latter from causing the rods A to sag. In this form of my invention, the cards D constitute guide cards and are provided with means for engaging the supporting and holding members, said means being in the form of lower ends which are cut away to provide enlarged heads al attheir lower extremities which are connected thereto by reduced necks (P. The cards D are adapted to be located in connection with said holding members by introducing the lower portion of the same fiatwise between selected rods A and subsequently turning the card to a position transverse with respect to the rods and with the neck portiori' ri between the said rods. In this manner the cards may be arranged in non-alined series and projected above the folders E in order .to provide spaces for the writing of names or other data. I
In Fig. 2 there is shown an index box within which are arranged vertical series of supporting rods B adjacent opposite sides, these rods being adapted to support cards D in a non-'alined series, as plainly shown, wherein the upper edge portion of each card is exposed above the respective edge of the next'adjacent card infrontthereof. These cards are provided at opposite sides with beads d connected thereto by neck 03, and
are introduced with the said headsfiatwise between selected pairs of rods 13 and subsequently turned to theposition shown. 7
Thus from the foregoing, it is to be'noted that my present invention constitutes but an extension of the invention idea set forth in my former application before referred to, and serves to illustrate certain of the numerous forms and adaptations of which my invention is susceptible. It is to be further understood that I reserve all other forms and adaptations of my invention as fall within the terms of the claims in my applicationyjust referred to, and those appended d hereto.
I claim 1, The combination of a holder having a plurality of spaced supporting members, and cards having extension heads of greater width than the spaces between said members, and also having portions connecting said extension heads thereto, said connecting portions being at least as narrow as the spaces between said members.
2. The combination of a holder having a plurality of spaced supporting members,
and cards having T-shaped extensions at their lower edges for engagement With a selected pair of said members.
JOHN AUSTIN BEST.
