Vor other stuing, b.
ituitd' $13125 S. S. RITTER., PHILADELPHIA,PENNSYLVANIA.
Letters .Patent N (106,508, dated August 16,1870; antedated August l0, 1870.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part f the same To all whom, 'it may concern have invented a new and useful Improvement in' the Manufacture of' Truss-Pads; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the'construction and operation of the same, ret'- erence being had to the accompzmyingklrawing inaking a part of this specification, in which- Figure lis a longitudinal vertical sec-tion 'o'f the frame and box, and
Figure 2 is aplan view of a pad.
This invention relates to a new method ofv manufacturing pads for trusses, whereby the time and expense of'l the same are materially reduced, as oompared with that attending the ordinary method; and consists in a block, havingin its upper side a cavity, of' proper shape to form a pad in, in combination with a. press for constructing the same'.
In the drawing- A is a rectangular wooden frame, bearing a ventical screw, A', in its upper cross-bar.
B is a box or mold, resting on the lower cross-bar of the frame, said mold having the shape required to be given to the pad, and being placed under the lower Lend. of the vertical screw.l
In the mold, in manufacturing, is first placed a piece of leather, a, cut of the propel-shape.
On the leather is laid a suitable quantity of wool,
Upon the stuffing is next located a plate of wood, c, of the shape of the top 'of the pad, Aand beveled inward at the sides.
Over the top and beveled sides ot' the piece c is drawn a bag', ofsome cheap cloth, which is fastened, by stitches drawn from side to side, across the bot'- tom of the plate. v z
To the outside of' -a bag a hempen cord,` c', is sewn, running around the edge of the same.A The plate e issubjected to the action ofthe vertical screw,`and the studing compressed thereby to the propel' degree.
Then the edges of the outside coveringaare drawn as tightly as possible over the plate c, and a crd, c", run through the gathers and tied. Stitches are also taken from side to side of the covering across the top Vof the plate c. `'lhe covering is then closed around the cord c by a row ofstitching.
4A steelor leather top, d, being last-ly attached to plate c by screws ortrivets, the pad is complete.
The press and mold is a great auxiliary in the man- I ufacture of trusses, quickening and eheapening the same materially. l
Having thus described my invention, What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters'Pate'nt, si The block B, having in its upper side a cavity, of a shape suited to the reception of a truss-pad, and combined with the frame A and screw A', in thc manner and for the purpose set forth.
To the above specilcation of' my invention I have signed my hand this 16 th day of November, 1869.
